My insurance renewal is a lot higher than expected so I checked the insurance group for my 2000 1.8 petrol focus on the Parkers site and its listing it as group 15. That can't be right? Unless they've changed the groupings to 1-50 or something? Read more

Hi I would be very grateful if someone could help me. I have a Ford Focus 1.5 auto diesel and today a message came up which said transmission faliure and then after about 15 min when I was trying to go over a speed bump the car stopped and would not move forward, (luckily no traffic) I turned the car off and then turned it back on after about 2 mins and it was fine. Driven it this evening and it seems fine. The car is driving well and the message has not come up. There were two things I wanted to ask really, the first is what could have caused it? and the second is i'm driving to SWales on Saturday (approx 4 hour drive) will the car be safe? It doesn't help that I don't really know much about the workings of the car. I also don't have the handbook as the guy who sold me the car did not provide one. Thankyou in advance to anyone who can help me, Sabina :) Read more

I commuted 154 miles a day, 3-5 days a week for four years. this was done, whilst driving a Mazda 6 2.0 TS2 petrol. I had this car for five years and it was so reliable and good to drive cross country and on the motorway . Driving like a vicar I regularly acheived 37-38mpg (40+ on V-power). Michelin Primacy HP's exceeded 35000 miles per set. I would recommend for your money that you look for an 04-05 reg 1.8 TS which you should be able to pick up for £3K-£4.. with 50-60000 on the clock. With a good service history should easily be able to stick another 100K on it. My car at 95000 miles felt just run in and if it hadn't been for a growing family then I would not have chopped it in for a new Mazda 5 last year.

My mondeo has become a nightmare to drive when the engine is cold.

When I start the engine the car drives normally for about 60 seconds. After that if I stop at a junction or any other time I put the clutch down for more than a few seconds the car stalls and has diffculty firing up again. It carries on likre this for about 5 minutes until the engine warms. During this time the engine has very little power and I have to drive in 2nd to stand any chance of keeping to a resonable speed.... Read more

Any reason so many (very) old threads are getting dug back up?

I'm sure that's right , AS. As moderators we try to spot and hide the spam, and it's helpful when people report it to us via moderators@honestjohn.co.uk.

There's nothing wrong with resurrecting a thread if there's something interesting to add, but it's a waste of time helpfully trying to answer a question asked several years ago!

Another 'which car to buy' post, I'm afraid. I'm taken by the VW group's 1.2 TSI engine (105bhp, good performance, good economy). This is available on the VW Polo and the SEAT Ibiza. I was looking to spend around £12k new, so the SEAT is within the budget but the Polo's a little bit more (judging by broker prices).

Buying new, what would you go for? I'm looking for a decent driving car (daily commute is 18 miles each way, semi-rural roads) but reasonably practical for reliability, servicing, economy etc.... Read more

I'd be looking to keep the car for 4-5 years. The £250 3yr service package is a great deal - although SEAT are doing 0% VAT so there's a benefit either way! True about the residuals...

Having done some sit-in tests at the dealer, the Polo feels a bit classier; the Ibiza is rather plasticy.

My son is nearing the age to move out of his baby carrier, however I have been researching rearfacing car seats on rearfacing.co.uk, very interesting reading. Hence I am considering a rear facing seat.

I have a new mazda3, but I find the rear doors are slightly short on headroom - i.e when I lift baby into the car he is very near the roof! I have an MX5 which I'm about to trade in for another car (possibly a berlingo -slidy doors look good to me, or laguna? haven't done a test drive with either of these though) I wondered if anyone could advise me on their experiences of rear facing seats? I will look towards ISOFIX versions probably. TIA Read more
