Rear Facing Child Car Seats - car67

My son is nearing the age to move out of his baby carrier, however I have been researching rearfacing car seats on rearfacing.co.uk, very interesting reading. Hence I am considering a rear facing seat.

I have a new mazda3, but I find the rear doors are slightly short on headroom - i.e when I lift baby into the car he is very near the roof! I have an MX5 which I'm about to trade in for another car (possibly a berlingo -slidy doors look good to me, or laguna? haven't done a test drive with either of these though) I wondered if anyone could advise me on their experiences of rear facing seats? I will look towards ISOFIX versions probably. TIA

We've decided to keep our little one in rear facing for as long as possible.

We bought a BeSafe IZI Combo (ISOFIX one - very easy to fit) from some very helpful folks at the InCarSafety centre near Milton Keynes. A bit of a trek for us, but worth it as their service was excellent.

The fitting of these can be a little unpredictable. For instance, we have two cars at the minute, a Zafira and an Avensis. You might expect that the big rear facing seat (and they (mostly) are big too) would be an easy fit in the Zafira but not in the Avensis.

Truth is, in the Zafira we have to have the front passenger seat as far forward as it will go and in the Avensis the front seat stays in roughly the normal position - i.e. still plenty of legroom there at the front.

In the Zafira this is just about acceptable for us, as Mrs OB is quite short and I don't tend to be a passenger in the Zafira for longer journeys. The Avensis works fine with this seat and it's no trouble at all, except for maybe affecting rear quarter vision slightly on that side.

I would say that if you are thinking about buying another car, to ensure a rear facing seat works there's a couple of issues to ponder:

  • Leg room in the rear dicates how far foward the front passenger seat will have to be. Mid-size MPVs actually have deceptively poor leg room, that's how they fit three rows of seats in! Tradtional family estates (e.g. Laguna maybe?) will often be much better in this regard. No idea on the Berlingo, but they don't look very long to me?
  • Some cars (often French MPVs) have storage compartments in the floor, this is a problem for some, although not all, of the rear facing seats as they have a stabiliser arm that needs a solid surface to rest on.
  • Will you have to share the seat with anyone else, e.g. grandparents...

Other than that, our little one gets on fine with the rear facing seat. Because it's quite high up, she gets a great view out of the car, resulting in lots of little finger waving and happy shouts of "Tat, tat tat!" as we drive along... :) Plus she's much safer too, so we're all happy.

HI OB, Many Many thanks for your detailed reply. Very helpful. I am in Scotland so the IncarSafety Centre would be a bit of a trek for me too :) Am checking out anyone up here who might provide the same service as they do. I have been thinking the BEsafe IZI combi ISOFIX is the one I will go for too. Looks pretty good to me. It's good to hear you are happy with it.

I've been checking out some cars and think I am sold on a mondeo. This wasn't even on my radar but after some real life investigation it appears to tick the right boxes for us. It has a massive boot, and also plenty of legroom in the rear seats, so I reckon that this will have enough space to accommodate the seat. Thank you for pointing out re the MPVs.

Surprised there isn't more mention of rear facing car seats, I was so glad to find out about them. Cheers :)

No probs! I'm also mystified why there isn't more attention given to these seats. I contacted Britax and Mothercare (must be the largest retailer of kids seats I guess) directly myself to ask why the aren't selling them and received polite, but empty replies. This is strange when you know that Britax make rear facing kids seats in group 1, but won't even advertise them on their UK website or sell them through the normal high street retailers...

Funny enough, the Swedish Britax website makes a big deal about how much safer the rear facing seats are.... Same company, different standards, very odd.

My take on this is that manufacturers respond to the local market.

My wife was really keen to get our son in a forward facing seat as early as possible, partly the result of peer pressure from other mums. They were of the opinion that the child being able to see where they're going and be able to be more interactive during the journey outweighed the additional safety risk.

As this is the general view in the UK, the car seat marketing people respond to it by promoting forward facing seats.

I just purchased a rear facing seat - a BeSafe IZi Combi ISOFIX from the Glasgow Pram Centre, it just happened to be discounted this week from RRP circa 300, to 229. This was the one I had been researching, so felt very happy to purchase at this price.

I asked the manageress why there isn't more marketing on these rear facing seats, as far as I can see they are much much safer. From my web research for forward facing, the seatbelt seems to do much of the damage to infants. Internal decapitation being one of the common misfortunate injuries being reported. Her reply was that all of her staff were not trained on the installation of rearfacing yet, so she was not allowed to advertise or promote the rearfacing seats. However there is to be a large campaign by BRITAX next year in this country.

I came to know about rear facing seats from Mumsnet forums, and once I read about it, there was no changing my mind.

I am a first time Mum and I suffered severe mobility problems during my pregnancy, and am still recovering. I had my heart set on one of these 'swivel' seats - whereby you swivel the seat to face to outside, place the child in, then swivel to the front, I guessed this would save my back somewhat. However, after hearing and reading about injuries incurred on small kids in forward facing seats - my mind was made up. The child is high enough up in the rearfacer to see out the windows, and am hoping that my son won't really know a difference as he has not had the chance of being forward facing so far. I can see where it might be different if he had been forward facing before.

Sorry this has gone on a bit longer than I anticipated, also to say that there is plenty of room in my 07 mondeo with the seat in place. Hope this is of help to someone out there :)

OB- I know it's crazy isn't it?

Just to add our experience - 3 weeks ago, we moved our son out of his infant seat to a BeSafe iZi X3 ISOfix and he loves it. More to the point, so do we - it's easy to install (thanks to ISOfix), so no big deal to move between cars - & so much easier than non-ISOfix rear facing seats like the Britax Multitechwhich we also tested at a local retailer.

We spent a long time researching this - my wife's a GP & had seen the article in the BMJ, highlighting rear facing group 1 seats as 5 times safer.

We needed to change our cars, so also have bought these with the rear facing seat in mind. We are thrilled with our 1 year old Hyundai i30 diesel estate - it's got the most rear leg room I've seen outside a limo (they stretched the hatchback's wheelbase when making the estate & shared the extra room between rear passenger leg room & boot - & loads of power). Crucially, because it's not trying to cover up poor leg room, the rear seats are reasonably flat (rather than sloping down towards the back), so the seat installs really well. Finally, the rear doors open very wide, so we can get him in & out easily or lean in & do nappy changes on the back seat.

We're also waiting for a Hyundai ix20 to turn up - amazingly, this swallows the seat even better, despite being 40cm shorter & having a good boot.

If my feedback is too glowing, it's because we're really happy with this set up - I don't work for any of these companies!

I wish you good hunting...

Absolutely, I don't get it at all, when I hear statements like this:

"They were of the opinion that the child being able to see where they're going and be able to be more interactive during the journey outweighed the additional safety risk."

I just can't believe it, or rather I can, because I understand the power of peer presure. Hopefully that pressure will be applied to some common sense in car seat safety soon.

Good to hear Britax are going on a campaign, fingers crossed it happens.

There was an unfortunate case last year of a family that committed joint suicide after their little boy died. The original cause of his injuries was a car accident, he was travelling forward facing. Had he been in a rear facing seat, he simply wouldn't have been hurt at all.

Here's the story:

tinyurl.com/ql6xrs

It was pneumococcal meningitis that killed the poor lad in the end, but no doubt his serious injuries caused by the car accident led up to this tragedy.

Times need to change, I dearly hope it won't be long. Not many kids die/get seriously injured this way, but we could make it none at all, which would be better still.
