The engine temperature warms up as normal in a few minutes. The blower temp is warmish but blows cold if I turn the fan up to de-mist the windscreen.

Is there a thermostat somewhere that needs replacing? If so where?

Thanks Read more

It seems that the motoring press are raving about these as a reliable and cheaper alternative to a Honda Jazz or a Toyota Yaris, and a lot nicer looking than a Nissan Micra. Also there is the five year warranty to consider, the dealers have a good reputation, the car is far more modern and nicer to drive than the Getz and economy and performance are up there with the best.

However, I did own a Getz and when under warranty was almost faultless and even if the fuel consumption was a bit heavy for a 1.3 ( 37 mpg average) the car was excellent value for money and reasonable to drive. Yet when the warranty went, a month later the ECU decided to die, leaving me stranded and with a £ 600 bill. This had obviously narked me big time, and I vowed never to buy Hyundai again, but the way the i20 is reviewed is making me think again. After all, I could buy a 2 year old example quite cheaply, get rid a few months before the warranty expires and buy another- as under warranty these cars seem perfect. Also 5 years beats most of its rivals. Read more

Like many people I rent a garage from the council. I do not keep a car in it as if the car is over about 5’ 3” wide I cannot get out the door – the garage is narrow rather than me being wide! Over a decade ago I was capable of climbing out the front window “Dukes of Hazzard” style but sadly no longer. So it houses a non-running motorcycle, pedal bike, lawn mower and assorted paraphernalia. What infuriates me is that being classified as a homeowner I have to pay VAT on the rent whereas council tenants in the next road do not. This means nearly an additional £2-00/week when VAT goes up in January. The thing I cannot understand is that an item or service should be either VATable or not. So why do one group of people pay VAT on their rent whilst others do not?

I suspect that it's because for Council tenants, the house rental forms the main part of the supply from the Council (which isn't VATable) and the garage rental only a small part (in rent terms) so they have discretion not to charge VAT.

For private tenants. 100% of the supply is VATable; hence you have to pay it!...

I'm impressed by that advert on the TV that shows a smiling chappie zapping a chip in a windscreen for free.

Looks too good to be true but let that pass. Question--does the chip completely disappear or is the outcome that it just looks better than it was before.... Read more

Well took my car to the windscreen repair place. Told to return in an hour. When I get there windscreen had a tubular heater held by windscreen with rubber suckers. Guy peeled off thin clear plastic sheet and scraped glass with razor blade. Result still got a white spot about size of two grains of sugar, but "legs" round the chip have gone except for certain angles of the sun. Chip can still be felt with finger tip.

Had hoped for better but white hole is massively reduced and probably not spottable unless you knew where to look....

My Rangie seems to have split the HG (or worse!) coolant boiled and blew out dramatically the other day.

Using the whatcar price guide, both models are more expensive on the forecourt than what they value them. I know they are not very accurate, and this seems to prove it!!

My fan is constantly on at the moment. I can be running the car for a few seconds and switch the engine off and my fan is still on. Ive checked my radiator and its water level is fine. Anyone have any ideas? Read more

My old-fashioned camera has broken and I'm going to replace it with a digital one.

From what I understand most digital cameras have some video capacity but how easy is it to transfer this to a laptop?... Read more

Look out for a camera with HD video (mine is Cannon Ixus 100 - many makes now have HD video as well now). I simply move the SD card from the camera to the PC and can view photos / videos. I also use some superb free software called DVDFlick to burn the video to DVD which downscales from 720p(1280X720) to 576p - still really good quality. Camera SD video (usually 640X480) looks poor in comparison.

Hi

My girlfriend has just received a £30 parking ticket where she lives outside her drive way. There isn't a residential parking scheme where you have a permit. If she's not working that day, she has to move her car so she doesn't get a ticket.... Read more

If he had started writing the ticket he cannot withdraw it. You are required to properly display so if it had flipped over then he has reasonable grounds to ticket you.

In turn you have reasonable grounds to challenge the ticket and if he made notes to support your case then there is a good chance that your challenge will be upheld.

You don't have to go into default. The process for challenging a ticket with the adjudicator should be fully explained to you fully in their rejection of your first appeal. If it was not please come back to me.

If you follow the procedures therein you will not be penalised if the adjudicator supports your case. You will be penalised with a higher fine (at the non-discounted rate) if you lose.
