Skoda - Windscreen chip repair - Tyrant

I'm impressed by that advert on the TV that shows a smiling chappie zapping a chip in a windscreen for free.

Looks too good to be true but let that pass. Question--does the chip completely disappear or is the outcome that it just looks better than it was before.

If you see what I mean. I'm interested because of looming MOT test and chip in glass. Please and thank you for your thoughts.

It is not cosmetic - it's about the chip not developing into a crack requiring a replacement windscreen - which is why the cost is often covered by motor insurance policies.

Don't even waste your money (usually about £10) getting the spot repair. All this does is stops the crack running. The repair will stand out like a sore thumb and is not even guaranteed to pass an MOT.

The stock answer is "sorry its to big you will need a new windscreen" if you stand your ground then they will repair it.

As Andy says it depends on the size of the chip and where the chip is.

Windscreen cracks, such as a ‘Star Break’, ‘Bull’s Eye’ or ‘Clover Leaf’ can be more difficult to repair, and may require a new windscreen, depending on the location and size of the damage.

Generally speaking you can only mend a chip of 10mm directly in front of the driver. That goes up in increments up to 40mm if the location on the windscreen is peripheral.

Over 40mm you need to replace the screen. If you follow these guidelines you will not normally fail an MOT.

I had a fairly large chip repaired, it was still visible afterwards but as the repairer pointed out, if I hadn't left it so long that it was full of dirt he could have done a better job. It was however a great improvement and you couldn't feel the repair site with your finger.

Well took my car to the windscreen repair place. Told to return in an hour. When I get there windscreen had a tubular heater held by windscreen with rubber suckers. Guy peeled off thin clear plastic sheet and scraped glass with razor blade. Result still got a white spot about size of two grains of sugar, but "legs" round the chip have gone except for certain angles of the sun. Chip can still be felt with finger tip.

Had hoped for better but white hole is massively reduced and probably not spottable unless you knew where to look.

Invoice sent to insurer was €65. I wonder why insurance premiums are so high.

Anecdote. While there guy was swapping the screen on a honda accord that had been on the road 4 days. Taken a big stone in front of driver that had made a hole right through glass. On the inside layer it had removed a disc of glass the size of a fifty pence piece.

Good test for the glass which it passed well I think.

Anecdote, The replacement was by XYG windscreens of Chian. Sorry China.

If you feel like a chuckle Google XYG and read reviews. OMG !!

Do you have to use the insurers "preferred" supplier or installer?

I don't think I will.
