My power steering recently failed right on top of the mot. The garage informed me that the steering column might need replacement, or the electric motor and ECU. That cost would be at least £250 for a refurbished electric motor.

I have a 2006 Mondeo, Duratec Engine (2.0 Liter) and the engine has been cutting out every now and then while driving. Sometimes it would stutter all of a sudden, the rev needle would go up and down and sometimes the battery light would come as if the car has lost power then it would go again, if i am on the highway the problem is much less noticeable because I think the car catches up again because of the momentum, this has been happening since the past 4 months, i took it to ford and nothing came up on the computer check. I dont think its a fuel related issue but I still changed the fuel filter just to be sure. Any ideas? ...... can it be the the cam or the crank sensor? Read more

Obviosuly an engine fault. Likely that the oil valve stem seals are at fault, or something to that effect

Hi there - did you ever get an answer to your problem?
Hi All
Could use some advice please..
Looking for an estate with the room to lug dogs around and to tow, once a week, a horse (laden weight is 1400kg on a braked trailer).
Typcal journeys weekly are short but then every couple of months there is a 500 mile round trip (no trailer) to consider, good fuel economy is therefore key for us.
With a budget of up to £16/17k or thereabouts, we've narrowed it down to a Subaru Legacy Spouterourer (2.0 diesel - probably the 2008 model) or a Passat Estate (again, 2.0 tdi 170 PS) any thoughts/considerations/experience from you would be gratefully received.

I think Avant's comment about the Subaru MPG vs the Toureg is valid. The 2.0 engine whilst towing will have to be worked hard. The Subaru has a boxer engine so the torque of this engine is higher up the range than a typical diesel; great as a drivers car but maybe not as good when towing.
FYI when I have 2 bikes on the roof I got about 30 MPG when I drove down to France ( at hish speeds admittedly). Same journey in a Seat Exeo (same engine as Passat) at similar speed was 40 MPG.
All I'm saying is, as per my first post, is does your mileage NEED super frugality? What is your annual mileage?
Our renault megane hatch has done 13,000 miles in just under 3 years. There is a howling noise from the gearbox when the car moves off, especially on an incline.
The warranty expires 23.10.10. The local renault agent has diagnosed that it is a "squawking clutch" and that it won't let us down. It is caused by doing too few miles. I realised that there was an upper limit to the warranty but not a lower one. The dealer has not looked inside the gearbox and I recently received a text on my mobile from Renault to say that everything is OK with our Megane. I have emailed Renault twice to ask "If they haven't done anything to rectify the problem how can it be OK? They have declined to answer my emails.... Read more
