What's the point of a 4 x 4 coupe? - Avant

Looking at the current thread about the BMW X6 made me wonder -

Am I the only one not to get the point of the X6, nor to understand what the new Range Rover Evoque is supposed to be evoking?

If you want a coupe, BMW have the 6-series, JLR the XK or (with 4 doors) the XF. If you want a 4 x 4, there's the X1, X3 and X5 and various Land Rovers.

Do a lot of (rich) people want both at the same time, or is this a niche that exists only in the minds of marketing men (and it probably is men in this case)?

Totally agree they do not even look nice.

True. Marketing people have discovered that if you put out a particular niche model , there will always be an idiot with more money than sense who will buy it. Can't blame them for playing to that kind of market.

Cars for people who don't know anything about cars

It's also transport for people who regard what they drive as some kind of fashion statement. "Look at me, I'm driving this xxxxxxx. What does it say about me?"

What it actually says about them is not what they imagine it says about them.

"or is this a niche that exists only in the minds of marketing men"

and those who need to look for ways to spend their money or who have more money than sense (lucky bXXXXXXs)

I imagine most of the detractors have never driven one and much of the animosity is envy, they are a lot more practical than those rather ludicrous super sports cars so favoured by middle aged men with receding if any hair line's and expensive wives...no one complains about a 2 ton sports car that offers the same emissions and fuel efficiency with none of the benefits.

I wouldn't want one meself though even if i had the funds, similarly i don't understand why anyone would want a modern Ferrari or Aston, mind you i don't have a receding hairline yet (though almost fully grey) or a trophy there for the money wife either..;)

Ultimately totally pointless but I suppose if people buy them, then there is a point in manufacturers making them.

If someone wants a 4x4 coupe, they should buy an Audi A5 Quattro ;)

Agree entirely,Tanvir. The A5 at least looks good to most eyes.

I'm not in the least envious - I just can't see the point. Many of the balding men with expensive wives can probably afford both a practical 4 x 4 and a sexy coupe - but the X6 and Evoque seem to lack both the practicality and the sexiness.

Nissan have come up with the same sort of thing for girls / cheapskates or whatever with the new Juke. We went to look at one because my wife is a girl and I'm a cheapskate.

Can't decide whether it is incredibly cute or butt ugly. Either way it had a certain charm I suppose. Didn't buy one though.

I think it's just an evolution from cars like the Ford C-Max, Vauxhall Meriva etc. Firstly small cars which had been crossed with mpv's. Then you get the large 4x4's which have been popular for a while. I think manufacturers had seen the types of people who were buying these 4x4's and what they were using them for and tried to make a smaller vehicle with a road presence of a 4x4. They also target people who previously drove the medium mpv's and present them with a practical car which seems better and safer to most people.

Approximately 25 years ago I recall seeing a TR7 body mounted on a Range Rover chassis. Not very attractive buy a serious off roader. Think it had more point than the hideous creations mentioned. As a youngster I loveed the Range Rover and XJ12 coupe - morphing them into one vehicle no way!
