Hi all,

Over the last few weeks I've noticed a strong smell of exhaust fumes in my ford focus (diesel). It is most apparent when I am stationary and I get a very strong smell of it when I park up and get out, so it's definitely me!

I've had a trawl through forums and some people suggest that it could be a hole in my exhaust. However I can't hear it "blowing" which it usually does with a hole. Others have suggested that it might be the pollen/fresh air filter is clogged. However the usually signs of this are misting up, which I don't get.

Can anyone suggest anything that it might be. I'm going to get it checked out somewhere tomorrow. It won't be kwik fit (after what I saw on watchdog <*** class="inlineimg" title="Wink" src="http://images2.moneysavingexpert.com/images/forum_smilies/wink.gif" border="0" alt="" />

Any info appreciated! Read more

Put your hand over the tail pipe does it blow your hand off or can you hear any blowing?

Also check exhaust manifold.

The front intermittent wiper selection does not work. When selected the wipers sweep once and park. If I then rotate the "raindrop" dial the wipers sweep once only on each selection and then park.

Have you checed the UPC control box above the battery. They suffer from water ingress and cause wiper and light faults. Youll usually find corroded fuses if theres water inside, to save taking the whole lot out.

Original oil for this car was API SG in either 5W30 or 10W30.

It's increasingly difficult to avoid 'upgrading' to fully synthetic oils, so last oil change I chose Castrol Magnatec 5w30.... Read more

I agree with you mate Mobil Super S 3000 5liter cost me £27 from halfords which meets ford M2C913A for duratec V6's and got more mpg (1-3 mpg more and quieter engine but performance was the same so might ditch formula f £17 (ebay) 5litre just to have a quiet engine.

Noticed that my exhaust seems to be rattling either on idle when cold or sometimes around 20 mph, but never at any other speed. The rattle seems to be coming from the front- there is nothing more major as the car has recently had an oil and filter change and no problems were detected then mechanically- which would suggest there must be a problem with a loose clamp or maybe the heatshield could be slightly loose.

Is this a major job, or as most people at work suggest just a case of your local garage replacing a clip or giving the exhaust a good whack to put it back into place, and would this be expensive as the MOT is due in six weeks time? Read more

I checked the car again and the rattle seems to be coming from the front part of the exhaust nearest the engine. Typically it seems to rattle when the car is idling( though not always) and sometimes around the 1500 rev mark, but at no other times. Any ideas as I do hope this is something simple when I take it up to my local garage this week?

Helly

Hello, I have a Micra (2003) and this year since March (1 week after new clutch fitted) my car has started to misfire and the maintanence light has come on on the dash, and i'm at a loss as to the cause. I have so far had it tested at Nissan and they said the Dignostic code related to air box seals. ( i was very unhappy with them as they also said my head gasket had gone when it hadn't so didn't get work done there or trust in what they said). I got someone else to look and they tested it on Dig. machine and the code related to the Cam Shaft Sensor so this has been changed as well as the air box seals (just in case). The light went off for a day then came back on and the misfiring is still there. Last week i flooded the engine tring to start it up so called out AA hoping they may know what was causing misfiring - they suggested the Crank Shaft Sensor. Yesterday i took it to garage and they tested it again on Dig. Machine and it's still saying the cam sensor - the guy swaped the cam & crank shaft sensor but the problem was still there took it to a car electric person who suggested maybe it's the timing chain but the guy at the garage didn't agree as these apparently rattle when they go wrong. Any suggestions would be great as i can not afford to pay out about £500 to change timing chain and it not cure the problem, someone did also say it may be the on board computer which again cost £100's. Sorry a bit all over the place here new to this. The car when i start it has to be rev straight away to catch it otherwise the accelaration pedal goes dead then i run risk of flooding the thing. Thanks for the replies.
I was told that when the timing chain stretches or goes it makes a rattle is this true as my car doesn't make any noises and when running it is absolutely fine. My car currently died at work yesterday think I flooded engine again?

Afternoon guys,

Car due a service and MOT in the next month. Been taking it to the same place for years and not had any problems. £125 for the service and MOT, problem eing I have to take the day off work to get this done as the garage is nowhere near my workplace. This time I've opted for a garage next to where I work, they have done a few bits over the years on my car a s well, new washer pump, new window regulator etc. No problems again.... Read more

landahoy

its the egr valve. a tricky little piece to get to under the bonnet and the part costs over £200. we are currently on our 4th in the last 4 months! its a bad bit of engineering and a friend iof ours is going to block it all off becuase at this rate its going to be one a month. the big give away is the horrible acrid smell from the exhaust plus loads of white smoke and the fact that there is absolutely no power in the aceleorator, its gets worse as the car gets choked up and eventually cuts out completely. very dangerous if it does this going up the A14!

I am in the running for a job in Coventry (Warwick uni), with my partner working in Birmingham (Uni of Birmingham).

Since she doesn't drive we were consideringliving either north or south Birmingham (close to a station on the Lichfield - Longbridge line as my partner doesn't drive) and me driving in to Cov. When I had to get into Cov at rush hour before, from the south it has always been terrible though, what is the best way to commute into cov?... Read more

As a guard on the railways - though not in your area - I'd say check out the bike-on-train scenario before you commit to anything. Trying to do this in the rush hour is generally a nightmare in most parts of the UK, I don't imagine the midlands to be anything different. You may well find yourself waiting on the platform as your train leaves, having been told sternly that you won't be getting on! Unless the trains you intend to use don't get too busy. Just a thought, but well worth investigating.
