I am interested in a Vauxhall Zafira 1.9 diesel with a 6 speed automatic gearbox. When in D (drive) i can flick the selector towards left and change the gears manually. When in D i noticed that at around 50mph the car is in 5 th gear (dashboard display tells you what gear you are in). I can select 6 th gear manually with no problems.

I know that automatics are less economical than manual gearbox. If i change the gears manually can i improve the mpg figures? Hope i make sense.... Read more

In reply to the original post question; No.

If the official MPG figure is 35 you'll be lucky to get 30 in the real world. Driving like a saint may get you a bit nearer but that is hard work....

Had a drive in a Peugeot 3008 1.6 diesel fitted with a DSG box. Basically it is a semi-automatic. Have noticed the gear changes are a bit jerky. Is this normal? This is the first car i have driven with DSG gearbox. I expected smooth changes as per fully automatic gearbox.

Hi, My daughters car is having problems with her battery, when i took it out of the car for charging up i saw it had a sticker on it which said Recharge on 12th month 2010. I am wondering what this means. Is it the end of the warrenty.Thanks. Read more

Anyone planning on seeing this film about the female pay strikes at Ford in the 60's when it opens next week?

Do you think it will be an accurate historical portrayal, or jazzed up for the big screen. Perhaps you have some personal experience of working in the British car industry during this period. I would be interested to hear some comments on this. Read more

I believe they use the same circuit on the ignition switch and this may have burnt out.

Just part exchanged today for this vw. Red oil and coolant light came on and the red stop light. I topped up the oil and coolant and drove car home. The car seems to be in good condition with the last owner having the car since 2003. The car drove very smoothly but the oil warning light intermittently came on and off, but finally stayed off after 28 miles approx. My total journey was 43 miles. The car has been off the road for two months as owner bought a newer vehicle and didn't need this one as well. I have been told to let the engine totally cool down. I will start it tomorrow morning and see if the warning lights come on. (hopefully not). Presumably I shouldn't drive it until I check whether it is serious or just a faulty switch. Would it be fair to say that if it was serious the car would'nt have driven the distance? As you may guess I am new to forums and I also know nothing about cars. Read more

Why do you think the last owner stopped using it?

After 5 days in France and 3 tanks of the new E10 French Petrol the engine started to vibrate with a noticeable loss of power. On return to the UK and using British petrol the car is the same. New plugs have not improved it. The engine seems to idle normally when listening from the front but standing at the rear the exhaust note is decidedly rough. Any suggestions of what to do next. There are articles about the petrol being corrosive and damaging metal tanks and pipes but not to the engine. Could the valves have been damaged? Would replacing the fuel filter if I could find it, be worth doing? Read more

I think the fuel fill was just a coincedence, as most UK fuel is now about 5% ethanol or some "green" component. So another 5% is not likely to cause problems really. My best guess is a coil problem.
