I need to replace my PIRELLI P6000 195/65 R15 91H (or V) tyres on my 2001 BMW 320D Touring with alloy wheels . Are there any better tyres available with combination of smoother running or better traction in wet / on ice or better cornering or longer life? The MICHELIN Energy Saver publicity sounds interesting and Leeboy mentioned UNIROYAL Rainsport and a local company suggested AVON ZV3 - which are best? I only drive 8000 miles per year; 30% in dry / 70% wet or ice; 80% A roads / 20% M roads. Any advice would be appreciated. Read more

Hi
For the second year in a row my 5 Series has failed it's MOT due to "excessive play" of a track rod. Last year it was the offside, this year it's the nearside.... Read more
83k is not bad for a track tod end after all its a cheap component easily sourced and easily fitted probably the reason for worn the tyre wear. When you have replaced the part and tyre have in tracked to be on the safe side.
Good morning, I am hoping that someone can give me an answer.

Hi,just had a new distributor put in points 16/18 thou timing 8BTDC good strong acceleration however when I accelerate up a slight hill the motor pings,a rattaling sound like something is loose. What is the cause and remedy, thanks in advance.cheers kiwi shane Read more
But is it the right distributor. A dizzy is set with the correct timing at idle but the spec has to be correct for the advance and retard and the vacuum. Do you have a timing light so you can measure the timing at 3000 rpm. Do you have a spec for the original distributor. Regards Peter
My colleague (honest it's not me) has no idea about cars. He noticed a few weeks ago his Oil light coming on 'when he went around a corner'. Two weeks later he filled the car up with oil.
However initially he filled up the Power steering fluid reservoir with Engine oil. Now he has actually topped up the engine with oil. so the 'funny noise' and red light have stopped. But hasn't drained the steering oil/fluid mix from his power steering system and is still driving around in it !... Read more
Ok.Just tell him not to be fooled if his engine suddenly starts to run more smoothly than it used to.Paradoxically this can happen just before the big seizure&blow-up!!
oil light comes on after engine gets hot , oil pressure ok changed oil switch any ideas please Read more
I assume the oil problem has only arisen since the work. Suspect blocked oil pick up tube or failing pump. What are the pressures cold and hot. Regards Peter
My Wifes 1.6 TDCi Zetec has just past its three year mark and first MOT having just covered 20K.
Well its been three years trouble free motoring with just one glitch with a cooling fan relay stick on, but rectyfied in one fix by the ford dealer with no issues at all.... Read more
That’s ridiculous for an exhaust back-box! I thought Land Rover parts were expensive, until I met Ford, Citroën et al.
The saying "you can polish a turd and put it in a box, but it's still a turd in a box" expresses my contempt pretty accurately with regard to this ABS unit. It’s a rather expensive mass-produced turd though. IIRC £1100 of the £1300 was material cost of the part. It’s pretty obvious from this, I think, that Ford are making a huge mark-up.
I suspect the difference between a Ford Teves mk 60 unit and a VW Teves mk 60 unit, for example, is few bits set in memory locations of the embedded computer system to inform the unit of the specification of the vehicle it is inteded to be installed in. For my Focus you can’t buy it from anywhere other than Ford. I suspect this is the same for other manufacturers.
My point here is at least you have the choice of aftermarket parts when it comes to items such as exhausts. The options with the Teves mk60; a) get it repaired (potentially by a bunch of cowboys? (BBA reman etc) b) get a new replacement. I try to do the responsible thing bearing in mind that it’s brakes. So option b). Thus, no choice but to buy it from Ford. It’s probably anti-trust; unfortunately I don’t have time to fight the world.
p.s. £1100 +VAT = £1292.50 + cost of fitting. Yes, slightly more expensive. Doesn’t make ABS unit look cheap though! Looking on the bright side though, at least I got a nice box for my turd, you would’ve just got a box made of turd. ;-)

I'd say the place to start looking is electrical connections on the battery, fusebox and alternator. If you have one use a voltmeter and volt-drop test these areas for bad connections and bad earths.....
