Near us here on the A34 on the Oxfordshire / Berkshire borders is a long and rather steep hill. HGV's normally crawl up, but coming the other way, I'm darn sure they come down at well over 60 mph. Do they run down in neutral to avoid the speed limiter? Mmmmm. Read more

Funny but I asked only the other day my son in law who is a Texaco tanker driver why HGVs brake lights regularly come on when they are running down the slight hill heading west down the dual carriageway to markeaton island at Derby.

His answer was exactly as described by Gordon with the added information that their vehicles have angle indicators somewhere on the trailer which log the amount of leaning over going through roundabouts and is an automatic call in to the boss for a caution when exceeding a certain amount....

Hi,

I'm thinking of buying an unrecorded damaged car and have found these two. Anyone got any thoughts if this is a viable way of saving money?... Read more

Sid,

Yes you and the rest are right, I think I got carried away with the idea of 'it cant be that hard or expensive to replace a bumper and door from a salvage place',

What peoples thoughts on the A4? It doesn't seem to have much damage on it at all.

My local Nissan dealer, who now also sells Suzukis, sent me a letter saying that as it's a while since I bought my last car from them, would I be interested in anything in their showroom? I did check their website and found two immaculate 09 plate Suzuki Splashes for £ 7495, which, of course, would still have the bulk of their warranty on them. I'm not overly fond of the Swift, finding it bulky looking and testers have complained of the heavy body affecting performance and economy. but the Splash looks a good car, like a mini MPV. Also on checking Which in the local library, the Splash received four stars for reliability and quality and the economy, performance and low purchase costs were praised. I was more inclined towards getting a Honda or a Toyota to replace my ageing Nissan, but the Splash has made me think again and as an existing customer, the dealership might give me a better deal. Take the radio out and see if its wired up properly and the ariel is in.If you have a 12v supply they are easy to test with a AVO or spare speaker.

Choosing between Mercedes and Audi? I'd definetely go for Mercedes if you want a car that will not simply drive you from A to B.

I don't believe it I have the same problem as my last car with an alloy wheel. During the week I went to the local tyre centre with what I thought was a slow puncture to be informed there was corrosion on the inner rim and that the wheel needed refurbishment. When I contacted the number they gave me I was quoted £65 + VAT. However I do not want the whole wheel refurbished just the leak cured. The other problem was dropping off the wheel and going back for it would use up my 50 mile/50 mph spare! Does anybody know of a company who will sort out the inner rim while I wait? Preferably in Herts or Beds but would also consider North London, Bucks and Essex. Many thanks. Read more

Many thanks for the responses. After telephoning around I found a small independent tyre dealer who did the job for just under £18-00. It seems that the larger chains (who mainly have younger staff) do not really want to know! Garage-express - if I had not found someone closer I would have come over to you.
