I have an occassional whirring noise which comes from the passenger side...It sounds louder when you're in the passenger seat...Its intermittant and seems to be louder at slower speeds.
My Dad who's a mechanic doesnt think its the bearings as its not constant and would be louder the faster i drove...... Read more

Hi I like the look of the BMW 3 series TDS I have a golf MK3 1.9D at the moment I will be looking at around the £1000 mark as im a little strapped for cash and will be lucky if i get £450 when I sell the Golf. Would this car be a reliable option as the Golf is IDI like the tds and has been solid but sooooo slow 17 secs to 60! If they are reliable what kind of milage would be the top range before I would start getting seriously expensive problems etc? Or would an Audi A4 TDI be a safer bet? I dont want to go the petrol route with these as I have found in the past that diesels seem to be reliable I.E my golf and the 106 1.5 I had before. Sorry to ramble Read more
Like madf says, at a price of £1k all normal judgement goes out of the window. Brand name is irrelevant. It's all down to the history of the individual car in question.
At that price it will be pretty old and high mileage. It won't be as fast and as tight as it was when it was new. It will have been through several owners. No telling how it was treated by any of them, good or bad. Law of averages says something will have to be renewed through wear-and-tear before long....
Hello everyone.
I purchased my 1999 1.8s Mazda MX5 a couple of months back, and in the last week I have noticed a loud knocking that occurs at 3000rpm upwards. It is in the main upper section of the engine.... Read more

Noticed that my exhaust seems to be rattling either on idle when cold or sometimes around 20 mph, but never at any other speed. The rattle seems to be coming from the front- there is nothing more major as the car has recently had an oil and filter change and no problems were detected then mechanically- which would suggest there must be a problem with a loose clamp or maybe the heatshield could be slightly loose.
Is this a major job, or as most people at work suggest just a case of your local garage replacing a clip or giving the exhaust a good whack to put it back into place, and would this be expensive as the MOT is due in six weeks time? Read more
I checked the car again and the rattle seems to be coming from the front part of the exhaust nearest the engine. Typically it seems to rattle when the car is idling( though not always) and sometimes around the 1500 rev mark, but at no other times. Any ideas as I do hope this is something simple when I take it up to my local garage this week?
car has done 37k and has developed a rattle when going over potholes or rough road services. Has anyone had this symptom? I have had the wheel off but can find nothing wrong with the suspension. I have also looked behing the plastic panelling inder the wing. Read more
I had a metallic rattle that was the result of the thin metal covers on the cataytic converter loose. the bolt holes in the thin metal were rusted through - I put some penny washers under the bolts and that fixed it. So it maybe worth a quick look underneath.
Clutch slipping to much to drive now so got it parked up on the drive :(
Just about to start making some call to local garages & ask the... Read more
Try Partco - they sell the ordinary kit which does away with the expensive DMF system. Taxi firms swear by them!!! Much cheaper too!!

Dear Backroomers,
My partner and are are looking to buy an Approved Used Focus from a franchised dealer. We are new to this type of buying having only ever bought cheap £1-2k cars before but I am however determined to get good value for money. My partner is wanting the extra piece of mind that buying from a franchised dealer gives and we fully realise we will pay a premium for that. I am not one for haggling for the sake of it or comfortable with the whole Dominic Littlewood technique and I would only ever offer a price that may be well lower than sticker, but still a fair one. A number of cars we are interested in aren't actually located at our local franchise but can be delivered. With this in mind i really don't want go down to the dealership when the car isn't there and have to go through the whole haggling process. ... Read more

When I blip to unlock my four door Golf, the rear near side door will not unlock , (it does open and close manually) my dealer tells me that it will cost around £220.00 to repair. I am reasonably mechanical...is it a job for an amateur !! and can anyone tell me what parts I will need, or in fact any tricks to do the job. Also I am about to do an oil change, is their an alternative to 'specific oil only for my diesel Golf' '... 'only avaialble from the Main dealer' !! Thank you in advance tdilew Read more
