My elderly jalopy is coming up for its MOT, and needs a service. Can anyone recommend a good experienced independent in or around Sheffield? I'm a bit wary of relying on The Good Garage guide et al, as I've seen some positive feedback for outfits that I wouldn't personally rate.

Thanks Dieselicious. I've realised my username is out of date (7 years out of date as it happens). It should be 'pete&hisknackeredoldmazda323'

my landrover garage are doing a full service shortly and adviced flushing oil system at a cost of £60.00. the car has done 37000 miles and new in jan 2008. advisable or just a "nice little earner". Thankyou. Read more
Using flushing oil is a total waste of time and in some cases causes damage especially to the seal the carbon build up has made on the rings and valve stems. When you change oil the engine it needs to be reasonable warm when you take it to main dealers the car is stood around for a couple of hours and the oil is stone cold and does not drain properly leaving all the crud still in the sump and oilways.
got a misfire,,,,looking at the engine from left to right the 4th cilyinder is not working properly. have changed the spark plugs and the leads also the crank poistion sensor and the cam sensor, have also tried another coil pack no joy.. . . . i had bought this engine about 4wks ago and it drove perfect, then it started to judder after 2wks so i changed the plugs, and it was i fine. then a wk later the judder was back, and has got worse ever since. sometimes when i dip me foot on the clutch when driving the revs drop rapidly and the car somtimes cuts out.. . . im out of ideas and money . . . can you help? I have an occassional whirring noise which comes from the passenger side...It sounds louder when you're in the passenger seat...Its intermittant and seems to be louder at slower speeds.
My Dad who's a mechanic doesnt think its the bearings as its not constant and would be louder the faster i drove...... Read more
actually guys i've been told its more likely to be the front bearing needs replaced...given its semi intermittent and is louder or quieter when turning...
but if you've any other ideas let me know...
Hi I have a Vectra 2 litre turbo diesel. the engine loses power when the temp rises to normal running temp on tick over the engine surges took to main dealer and they told me that the fuel pump module had gone cost £200 but have to replace pump also cost £800 it did this about 12 months ago for about a fortnight then cleared and has been fine until now any ideas Read more
Hi I like the look of the BMW 3 series TDS I have a golf MK3 1.9D at the moment I will be looking at around the £1000 mark as im a little strapped for cash and will be lucky if i get £450 when I sell the Golf. Would this car be a reliable option as the Golf is IDI like the tds and has been solid but sooooo slow 17 secs to 60! If they are reliable what kind of milage would be the top range before I would start getting seriously expensive problems etc? Or would an Audi A4 TDI be a safer bet? I dont want to go the petrol route with these as I have found in the past that diesels seem to be reliable I.E my golf and the 106 1.5 I had before. Sorry to ramble Read more
Like madf says, at a price of £1k all normal judgement goes out of the window. Brand name is irrelevant. It's all down to the history of the individual car in question.
At that price it will be pretty old and high mileage. It won't be as fast and as tight as it was when it was new. It will have been through several owners. No telling how it was treated by any of them, good or bad. Law of averages says something will have to be renewed through wear-and-tear before long....
Hello everyone.
I purchased my 1999 1.8s Mazda MX5 a couple of months back, and in the last week I have noticed a loud knocking that occurs at 3000rpm upwards. It is in the main upper section of the engine.... Read more

car has done 37k and has developed a rattle when going over potholes or rough road services. Has anyone had this symptom? I have had the wheel off but can find nothing wrong with the suspension. I have also looked behing the plastic panelling inder the wing. Read more
I had a metallic rattle that was the result of the thin metal covers on the cataytic converter loose. the bolt holes in the thin metal were rusted through - I put some penny washers under the bolts and that fixed it. So it maybe worth a quick look underneath.
Clutch slipping to much to drive now so got it parked up on the drive :(

Try Partco - they sell the ordinary kit which does away with the expensive DMF system. Taxi firms swear by them!!! Much cheaper too!!
