Mazda MX5 - Engine trouble - Eggmanfoo

Hello everyone.

I purchased my 1999 1.8s Mazda MX5 a couple of months back, and in the last week I have noticed a loud knocking that occurs at 3000rpm upwards. It is in the main upper section of the engine.

A local garage inspected the car and told me the little/small ends have gone.

They said I have 2 options. 1. Have the top of the engine taken off and the little/small ends replaced, at a cost of £1500

or

2. Replace the engine. The garage will charge £1500 to purchase the engine and fit it, or they will fit an engine I purchase for £400.

Do the values above seem realistic?

Are these my only options?

Will a 2004 engine fit in a 1999 MX5

I am pretty unhappy with my current situation, so any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Neil

Can you drop the sump if so its a relativly easy job to change the bearing both little and big ends and also replace the rings this should cost a lot less than £1600. The other alternative is you purchase the engine for £400 and get some else to fit it not the people who seem to want to bankrupt you and dont forget a new clutch at the same time.

Thnak you for that...Can I just ask, why a new clutch???

Because while the engine is out it is good practice to replace the clutch plate the cost is negligable and saves taking the engine out again if the old clutch is faulty or worn.
