toyota hi-ace 1983 - engine analyzer - wanderer

Hi,this all started with my posting about pinging, sooo much advice and help in trying to sort it out.A good starting point would be to get an engine analyzer, which one is best, inductive or digital or the three or four wire one, dont forget the vehicle is a Toyot hi-ace 1983,Any suggestion, thanks in advance.cheers kiwishane

That is a very basic engine and I suspect it does not have a diagnostic connector.

Did you establish if you have the correct Distributor, Yes or No.

Hi Peter,no I have not established if it is the right distributor, the people I paid to install it (ultra tune) should have checked but now have doubts, when I returned the van saying it was pinging under load he said they had almost run out of adjustment. When I got it back I had a look and the body of the distributor was centred, however when I retimed it I had to reset it almost all the way to the left, then I understood why he had said he had almost run out of adjustment,Why did I move it from where they had set it,because when I got it back it lacked any response and my timing light showed the distributor was well out of wack as soon as it was reset to 8 BTDC boy I got really good response but pinging under load.My thinking is get an analog engine analyzer to establish where everything is.I have three months warranty with ultratune but given the service with this mob I will take it to another ultras tune.cheers kiwishane

You need the advance curves to campare to measurement you have taken with your timing light. As I have expalined the dizzy position sets the idle timing, revs advanced the centifugal timing and vacuum deals with load conditions. Do you have a make and part number for this dizzy and have you spoken with Toyota. Regards Peter
