Advice on commuting from Birmingham to Coventry - rexmedorum

I am in the running for a job in Coventry (Warwick uni), with my partner working in Birmingham (Uni of Birmingham).

Since she doesn't drive we were consideringliving either north or south Birmingham (close to a station on the Lichfield - Longbridge line as my partner doesn't drive) and me driving in to Cov. When I had to get into Cov at rush hour before, from the south it has always been terrible though, what is the best way to commute into cov?

Alternatively we are considering living in central birmingham and taking trains (+ bike for me)

Any advice?

well warwick uni isnt central cov

which part of brum uni? near the centre?

lots of friends done it/do it, sort of done it myself a bit, and even more extreme cov to london commute (which is doable if you live near the train station)

depends what kind of lifestyle you want, you could get one of the trendy inner city flats in the centre of cov (walking distance to train station), then you could drive or get bus to warwich uni easily and also get train to brum easy, city centre living has downsides like loud drunks late and night and worst GPs in town and so on

else somewhere on the stopping train line between cov and brum, canley has some ok places to live nearby

trains + bike to warwick uni is likely to be very unpleasant, the trains are too crowded at rush hour for bikes and the bike ride is busy roads during rush hour

i guess also depends when you are travelling, if its not strictly 9-5 and can avoid rushhour that can help

else just accept you need to drive everyday and live somewhere you like on a bus route for her, brum to cov commute is A45 + backroads but im not giving the secrets away, taking care to slam the brakes on for the cameras like everyone else does

good luck

She's slap bang next to University Railway station, so we would like to avoid having to change trains at New Street.

I was actually thinking of leaving my (old) bike at Canley rather than taking it on the train. It wouldn't be strictly 9-5, though I may have to do 9 am some times

I'm familiar with the scenario you describe. My advice is to buy/rent in the Sutton Coldfield area close to one of the stations on the cross-city line (i.e. Erdington, Chester Road, Wylde Green, Sutton Coldfield, Four Oaks, with prices generally increasing in that order!).

That way you can live in a nice area, have access to the pretty good rail service to B'ham Uni, and use an appropriate combo of M42/M6/A452/A45 to get to Warwick Uni.

Good luck, and if I can help further let me know.

bike left overnight at canley station will disappear after a few nights, put an ad in a local paper see if anyone near the station will let you keep it in their garage?

As a guard on the railways - though not in your area - I'd say check out the bike-on-train scenario before you commit to anything. Trying to do this in the rush hour is generally a nightmare in most parts of the UK, I don't imagine the midlands to be anything different. You may well find yourself waiting on the platform as your train leaves, having been told sternly that you won't be getting on! Unless the trains you intend to use don't get too busy. Just a thought, but well worth investigating.
