i want to change the oil in the gearbox of my nissan micra k11. it is a manual gearbox with a 1 L engine. Should i be looking at gear oils or transmission oils. what is the difference between these two oils. Read more
hello
i own a 2000 sedona gsx 2.9 auto dielsel and for about 3 weeks i have had a noise coming from the engine area, it is a rattling sound as if something (metal) is being thrown around the engine or bearing rattling noise.
i originally thought it was the manifold or the sump area but very hard to pin down the actual area.
the last 2 days the noise has quietened down but now all of a sudden , my oil light came on and when i dropped off on acceleration , there was an air(ish) noise which i can only describe as a quieter version of a dump valve going off.
we changed the oil and filter (non kia) about 6 weeks ago and oil levels are all fine , i did notice however that there was slight smoking when i took off the filler cap.
i dont want to turn it over again as the only person ive managed to speak to about this about has said it sounds like the oil pump.
would the symptoms and subsequent actions ie oil light and noise it made sound like an oil pump to anyone here that knows?
also, i'm having trouble finding a garage to change the timing belt ("pain in the a** job" and " all dayer and we cant justify the labour charges for changing a belt") are the replies ive had so far from local garages.so again any advice on mechanice in the welling/kent area would be appreciated.
thanks Read more
I wouldn't worry too much about the cambelt cost - it sounds like the oil ight is telling the truth and the engine is now cactus.... need to get it to someone who can measure the oil pressure and if it's low / non existant, then sadly it's probably time for the sc***pers and a search of Autotrader for a replacement....:-((
Brake lights have stopped working although the high visibility brake light works fine? Any ideas? Read more
Have you checked the bulbs. Regards Peter
Advice please. If the alloy wheels are stripped and re-painted will this stop the leaks ? (I've tried everything else). Read more
Thanks for your response likerocks.
My lhd 406 Hdi has an irritating whine when I select fifth gear and accelerate. When decelerating it stops.
My local mechanic says it is normal and coming from the turbo but I would like another opinion or if someone has experienced this problem and how to rectify it. Read more
Thanks very much Peter for your instant and erudite reply which is much appreciated.
I think your final sentence seems my most prudent approach as the noise is barely audible if I have the radio on.
Had my corsa from new. It is a 54 plate 1.0 engine.
Was working fine for five and a half years then started to leak oil and make a noise in the engine.... Read more
I have only ever owned one corsa.
I looked after this car, checking oil etc, servicing....
Hi - My car suffered a catastrophy recently when the top of the oil filler cap detached when driving and fell down the side of the engine, wrecking the alternator belt which in turn wrecked the timing belt. So now I'm waiting to find out if it is just the head that needs replacement (£1200) or a new engine (£4000+). This obviously shouldn't have happened but the oil filler cap and oil dipstick are collocated on these engines and seem to be a two part design with the top part being able to be unclipped. I've complained to Renault to no avail. Has anyone else had experience of these filler caps coming loose? Trying to gauge whether there is a common problem here. Read more
I wonder if I could get the benefit of collective wisdom on 2 car changes?
At present my wife drives about 6000 miles pa in a 1998 Civic 5dr 1.5vtec. This car has been in my family since it was a demonstrator and has been fantastic to own. Very little unscheduled expense, good fuel economy and 100% reliable. It is also smooth and pleasant to drive, if a little unexciting. However it is now 12 years old, has 120,000 miles on the clock and is getting more than a bit tatty and one day soon will need an uneconomically expensive repair such as clutch or engine mounts. Even if nothing goes badly wrong, it needs a few bits and pieces doing such as trackrod ends, broken door lock, wing & door skin replacement which at garage prices would soon exceed the value of the car.... For 12,000 miles a year I don't think you need a diesel, and as you know older dlesels cn be liable to major, and expensive, failure.
SWMBO had a Civic 2.0 a few years ago and it was good to drive and we often got 40 mpg out of it on a long run. There may not be many 2.0 Type S Civics around though....

As Richard says, but if it is a faulty sensor you will probably find it on the thermostat housing.
