When we tow a caravan with the car I have always noticed that after a long jouney 4 hours small flecks of a sooty oily substance all over the front of the caravan. The issue as gradualy got worse until now the flecks are noticable after 30 mintues and after 4 hours the caravan is covered in the material.

The car has been to a few garages and all have looked at the car checked the emisions and test drove the car and said there is nothing wrong, but it is now impossible to tow the caravan.... Read more

I belevie the fragmants must be from the exhaust as the end of the exhaust is much blacker than two other ford I drive with the same engine.

Hello, first time here and just looking for some advice. I was driving my Avensis 2.0 CDX (V reg) yesterday when suddenly I heard a bang and then a lot of rattling from the engine. I immediately pulled over and when I got out of the car I noticed lots of oil under the car dripping onto the floor. I phoned my car rescue firm and they told me that a rod had gone down through something and basically there was nothing he could do so he towed me home. I am no mechanic and don't claim to know much about the workings of a car engine. My questions are simple. Does this sound repairable and if so what would I possibly be looking at having done (engine wise and money wise). If not how much would I be looking at to have a new engine fitted (bearing in mind I could not do this myself so would need a garage). Obviously I do not expect an exact figure but a rought estimate would be helpful. The engine had done 135,000 when it broke. Any help would be most appreciated. Read more

As a simple check, open bonnet and run engine with a/c switched on .After a minute or so ,touch the 2 aluminium pipes that run along next to the right front wing edge. One pipe should be hot and the other cold.If this is the case then the a/c is probably ok and as suggested there could be a fault with heater valve.hth

Has anyone chosen, and disregarded, a car simply on the number of queries in this forum and problems with them. There seems to me to be certain cars that bring out many owners with similar problems and complaints. No names no pack drill.

We have had this car for 12 years and it has been faultless. We gave it to my sister in law last night and this morning it has stopped working (unbelievable!)

It started fine and she drove it 10 miles to work. When she left 2 hours later to make some calls it would not turn over. Called the recovery bods who got it started but the engine fault light has come on and he thinks the car has gone into shut down mode. ... Read more

Yes, came to that conclusion myself. It wasn't a garage, just an incompetent recovery numpty. All sorted now. Thanks for the help.

My 2002 Petrol fiesta has had a sporadic problem with the power being restricted and EAC flashing up on the dashboard. Over the years it's been looked at by various mechanics, I've also read many internet posts which imply that this fault can be due to a magnitude of reasons. Currently my cars revs are all over the place, especially when I start it up. Occasionally the revs will just increase on their own accord - pressing the accelerator can sometimes stop this from being an issue. It often idles at a much higher rev count than it should. I had the lamba sensors looked at last year - this fixed the problem for a good 6 months; does anyone have any other suggestions and ideas, I would be very grateful! Read more

I suggest:

a) Do a smoke test to check for any vacuum leaks around the air intake system....

hi guys firstly the head gasket has been done with mls gasket ages ago with cam belt and bolt kit ect ect and has ran fine since over 30k ago,any way the other day i thought i would do a coolant change with all the rocomended coolant i.e oat long life coolant (the red colour stuf).at first after i done the change i suspected a air lock so i bled the system as recomended ran it with blowers on hot and then finaly i started gettin heat through the blowers, its been fine all week then today i noticed the coolant fan cme on when driving about 2 mins after starting the engine then went of 2 seconds after turning engine of.it has been doing this all day and nite, the temp gauge never moves above half way(normal reading as always)ive checked pipes ther all hot and the watter seems to be circulating through the header tank fine small hose at the top, the car was fine before i did the coolant change any advise would be great thanks.ps no coolant loss of leaks but obviously the problem has accurd since the change, wish i never started.thanks again Read more

I would suspect a sensor problem but providing the engine temperature is OK I wouldn't worry about it. The only possible connection with changing the coolant I can think of is perhaps an air pocket around the sensor, but again, if the temperature is normal I doubt that.

If you have a new diesel car on the motability scheme and your DPF filter clogs up because you only drive locally and can't be cleared on a long run meaning a trip to the dealer who will foot the bill? If it is a manufacturer's problem then they will but this problem only occurs if you don't use the car properly so in a way it is your fault the DPF got clogged.

Looking at the cars available on the motability website for disabled drivers there is a large selection of diesel cars. Nowadays to meet emissions majority of diesels come with DPF (Diesel Particulate Filters) fitted. They are not suitable for those who drive locally, school runs etc because it has been reported that they clog up. They are ideal for those who at least once a week go on a motorway/long distance where the exhaust can get very hot and clear the filter.

If the filter clogs up and can't be cleared by a long drive at high revs then it is a visit to a garage ending up with a large bill. Dealers should ask you about your driving style and recommend a petrol version if the car is only used locally. Some brochure have this warning but as a small print hidden away. Read more

To follow up on this subject regarding buying a car from a dealer.Iwas often surprised how little salespeople know about the cars they selling.I remember when we bought the mitsubishi space star and the salesmanager went with us for a test drive.I was asking him questions about the car and he didt have any clue either. I had more knowledge than he did all he was on about playing golf and his handicap.(strange).

Now its gone worse and loosing a lot of power. Sounds like a tractor. I have to rev it very high in order to even move an inch. I't will be great if some one can help out or point me to the right direction to what do I need to do with this car if they had a similar problem? Thank you in advance. Read more
