You need a multimeter with an 'amps' range, disconnect one battery terminal and connect the meter to the lead you have removed and the battery terminal you took it from, with nothing turned on it shouldn't read more than about 100 ma (1/10 amp) if it does remove each fuse in turn until the load drops, find out what is connected to that fuse and that will be your problem.
I'm looking to buy a diesel car and have narrowed the search down to the Honda Accord I-CDti Sport or Volvo S60 D5 SE(Euro III engine, so no DPF). I've found one of each, test driven them but still can't really decide!
Both are 05 cars, the Honda(05 reg) is on 54000 miles and the Volvo (54 reg) is on 55000. They are also very closely priced.... Read more
As far as the mechanics are concerned the Honda wins hands down I had a 54 cdti estate with over 120k ran perfectly all its life.

A clatter or rattle from the top of the engine on these is often caused by defective flaps within the inlet manifold. If the problem is left too long, the flaps disintegrate and become ingested in the engine, unfortunately with dire consequences.hth
Hi
I have just purchased a 2007 (57) 1.25 zetec climate ford fiesta with 75000 miles on the clock. It has a full service history and we won't put more than about 6000 miles per year on it. Overall I think I've got a deal, however the high mileage concerns me a little. ... Read more
I've noticed a progressive problem on my golf that has now got unmanageable. When starting, the car ticks over nicely but won't fire. It got to a point that it would take up to 15 minutes for the engine to start. So I booked in the car for an overdue service and a diagnostic. Two faulty glow plugs were replaced but that didn't solve the problem. The car was booked in again for a glow plug relay replacement. That still did not solve the problem.
The garage are now telling me that it maybe a ECU problem with an estimated cost of £700 to £1,000 to replace the ECU! I'm not technical so I'm a little naive as to what to do. Are there any alternatives that I could try? Can a ECU be re-programmed? Can I go elsewhere to get a better deal? I'm sure everyone will agree with me that in the current climate, a £1,000 is money that nobody wants to part with.... Read more
Take it to a diesel specialist rather than the dealer, they usually know what they are doing.
I changed the front brake pads, a job I have done successfully before. Now I find a very low brake pedal. It seems to recover on "pumping" but only temporarily. This was not present with the old pads. I have tried bleeding brakes but this makes no difference.
As I see it, nothing has changed except the pads, so why???????????... Read more
The moral of this story appears to be "check, double check and check again".
One of the pads (yes , one of the ones that I installed) was not square in the housing. Realignment made all the difference. Back on the road again............................mw
a couple of days ago my car started having wild fluctuations on the temprature gauge going up to completely in the red anytime the speed goes up near 70mph, if travelling on the straights the temprature would not drop but if i went round a roundabout the temprature would drop to normal going up again on the next straight. i have fitted a new sender unit to the centre of the head, this has not change anything. heater control valve is working , no water loss has taken place. radiator hoses feel hot on the thermostat hose side and cooler on the waterpump side. any help much appreciated Read more
To test the rad you need to remove it and have it pressure tested I doubt it is the pump but I would remove it and have a look as a matter of course.
Main problem is no power in higher gears, and it doesn't appear that the turbo is kicking in in lower gears either - definitely not as it used to be. Glow plug light does not flash as in previous posts.
How can I check if the Turbo is gone gone, or could it be a sensor or actuator not functioning? Read more
yeh probably the hose

Interesting few hours Andy ? especially if the inserting tang drops in. I used to use the Heli coils extensively before I retired & I believe they are stainless steel & so non magnetic
Leave it to the Professionals is my opinion for what itsworth.
