Have you ever seen one? If so, where and what was it doing?

Funnily enough, despite being up at 5am most Mornings, I`ve never seen one locally. Perhaps it`s because we are in a plastic rubbish bin area and in the suburbs.... Read more

Hello,

Is there any reason why you'd put different size wheels on a simple Ford Focus? I've just had mine serviced and the mechanic noticed the disparity. Front wheels are smaller than the rear ones but the previous owner would have had this done and I've no idea why (175/65/14 vs 175/70/14)!... Read more

I suppose its better having four the same size but as Peter rightly says you now have four non standard tyres.

I bought a 2002 Renault Vel Satis 3.0ltr DCi in January and all seemed ok until I
drove a long distance in the car last month. After about 40 miles, the temperature
gauge shot up to maximum and I was told to STOP THE CAR. I took my foot off to stop
and the temperature gauge immediately started to fall and by the time I stopped had
almost reurned to normal. This happened again the next time I put the car under
stress, i.e. going uphill at speed.
I have taken the car to my local garage and they say tht is is probably either the
cylinder head gaskets or the cylinder heads themselves. The quote for the work is a
minimum of £1000ish rising to £3500+ if the heads have gone.
The car came with a 6 month warranty with an external company, but their limit is
£1000. I have asked them if I can go ahead with the work to check the head gaskets,
but they say that if it is not this then they will not pay for the labour.
I read on your FAQ that if the prblem occurs within 6 months of purchase then I can
take the car back and get it repaired or get a refund.
Would you advise this or should I go ahead and get the problem checked out first?

Thank You Read more

Hi Gerry,

sorry to hear about this & I have some observations:...

Remember the joy and excitement of the Human Genome Project? A few years back, that is - when the great scientists exclaimed that all diseases would be conquered, that it would be simple as much of the code in the double helix, was in fact `junk` and had no use.

Well.. something like that.... Read more

I need to do some work on the brakes.

Rather than jack up the whole car I was thinking of putting the trolley jack under the wheel hub and jacking that just to get the wheel of the ground.... Read more

Bad idea. I doubt you would be able to get a decent jack under the hub assembly anyway as the tyre is in the way. Although the bottom wishbone looks tough it was never intended to to take the load in that plane. Regards Peter

Anybody got any advice on rebuilding these old engines? I have a pair of them that have only done 69hours from new but have been completely neglected and never moved for the last 6years or so. What precautions do I need to take before I tkae them apart to strip them (if neeeded) or do I just obtain 2 others and ignore the ones that I have. I want to get them running for my boat and the only reason I have to keep them is that the marinising (cooling system) is special to these engines. The other option I have is to change them for two other engines that I have - two 4litre, 6cylinder Jeep engines that have advantanges like more power, torque, electronic ignition and fuel injection. Thoughts on a postcard please! Read more

EGR faults do cause some of the faults that you mention.
