I'm no expert - hopefully one will be along tomorrow - but the first thing to check may be whether fuel is getting through. If there is a blockage, or the fuel pump has failed, this could cause your symptoms.

Mrs G got a parking ticket yesterday apparently for the offence "parked adjacent to a dropped footway"

In fact she parked straddling a "raised roadway"... not a "dropped footway" hey built recently I guess what you could call "speed ramps", they are the full width of road but the kind of width that in some cases sees them painted as zebra crossings, more like a ramp than a bump but in this case not painted with any markings at all.... Having said that, the ticket says "parking on a dropped footway", and at this point the footway isn't dropped, unlike the similar "crossing" 100 yds away....

I recently had my air con regassed at Kwik Fit, as it was running cool - not freezing cold as I am used to. It has only been three months and the air con is again running cool and takes ages to 'cool' the car. I have checked frequently for leaks and found none. Any ideas what the problem may be and is it likely to be expensive to correct?

Thanks... Read more

Aren't KwikFit running a promo - cooler aircon or your money back? Anyway my 2002 1.6 Focus zetec is in the garage tomorrow with an aircon leak. Apparently it is the condenser to evaporator pipe replacement. Quoted £250. Similar thing happened in 2007 with a pipe chafed through somehow, and cost about the same! By the way my car has 125000 on the speedo.

My car is intermitantly loosing power. Put your foot down and nothing happens. Be gentle and it will potter along in a jerky fashion but sometime at 15mph especially uphill.

As the diagnostic is clear my local Renault garage are mystified. Even the usual Renault trained but not so expensive Renault expert cannot help.... Read more

Does anybody have experience of getting the existing ECU repaired to rectify the ABS/ESP module problem, as opposed to replacing the ECU?

hello
This fault only occurs sometimes: mostly it starts and runs fine.
* I start the engine, it fires normal, then after 4 or 5 seconds the engine splutters and will stall out...

I have worked out a resolve to get going....
when/if it begins to splutter, I quickly increase the revs a little.... this gives me time to quickly CLICK CLICK with the ignition key... (turn the ignition OFF then ON again)... the engine THEN is firing with no spluttering and doesnt stall out. It can then be driven as usual.... Read more

I have today spoken with a well known extended warranty company and asked the company a few questions.

My first question was, " I have read your policy summary and it states in significant exclusions and limitations section 4 . we will not pay for repairing or replacing parts which have not suffered a breakdown. Does this mean you need to breakdown? the answer was yes you need to breakdown. I asked if they were serious! the company said yes we are serious! I then asked what about if the gearbox is screaming and xyz company have said it will be £800 now or if it suffers a roadside breakdown it will be £1500? the warranty replied it must be a breakdown!, lol!, so basically how many people are driving around who are covered by this company? putting other people at risk, because they can not claim because they need to suffer a breakdown?... At this point you would need to move away from general hypotheticals to a more accurate description of the nature of the problem. If the wheel bearing (& it's probably not the best example) has not actually failed then the warranty company would be under no obligation to pay for a repair - on the simple logical explanation that if it ain't broken why would it require repairing?

In a real life situation symptoms occur first which would lead to a diagnosis. The nature of the diagnosis would determine whether the claim is covered or not. A better explanation of "nearly ready to go" would be necessary.

I hate buying cars, but the 13yo Rover 216 I'm driving at the moment is on its last legs so I've got to bite the bullet. Some additional boot space over the Rover would be useful, but there's only a small space on the drive, so a large family car won't fit, so a Focus/Golf, etc it is .

I've a budget of 10-12K for a used 5dr hatch still under mfr warranty. It'll do 12K a year, mostly on A-roads with few short trips, and little town driving (commute when I do it, is 50miles round trip). I'm now wary of diesels having lurked on forums like this! Entry petrols look sluggish on paper though, and larger ones look thirsty now cars have evolved to be so big&heavy. I like to get where I'm going, so would find a sluggish car frustrating. Not looking for a hot hatch - the Rover is nippy enough, but is a bit loud on the m'way. In the last three cars I've driven regularly, I've tended to get the official combined consumption figure. The more I look, the more I'm frozen with indecision, but the various problems on the Rover mean I'm going to have to make my mind up.... Read more
