This is usually caused by a failed inlet cam follower and causes the cylinder to run weak and overhead the plug. Serious carbon deposits on the valve stem can also cause this as does a burned out/chipped exhaust valve as during the compression stroke a lot the fuel mixture is forced out before ignition. Do a compression test and post back with the numbers. Regards Peter

I just went into the back of a BMW! thankfully it was only at about 5mph, my car is completely fine, however the womans BMW has about a 3 inch scratch ,and a hole from where part of the metal on the bumper has pulled away, the hole is come out about half an inch from a side on view. From a front on view, you cant even see the hole, just the scratch.

How much do you think this is going to cost me, I dont know if that can be repaired, or if I am going to have to pay for a whole new bumper to be fitted! Read more

Having read several of your readers reports about being caught by 'damages' to a
hire car after they have returned it, I was also billed for damages after I had
handed back the keys. This summer I am hiring in Spain, and I know I will need
to drop they keys - presumably in a box - as I will need to take the car back
before the office will be open. Assuming I haven't damaged the car, how can I
best protect myself from being billed anything, as I know there won't be anyone
to receive the car? Out of interest, even if the office was manned, how can I
insist that they check the car in my presence? I travel as a single mother with
children and can sometimes feel quite intimidated by the office staff. Many
thanks

Hope it's OK to pass on a tip originally from HJ: get additional cover from a company like "www.insurance4carhire.co.uk ". This is a way to insure your insurance - so that if the worst comes to the worst, your "voluntary excess" will be paid. Even with the usual Collision Damage Waiver and all the boxes ticked there's invariably an excess, so that you "volunteer" to pay up to the first five hundred or even a thousand pounds of any damage, no matter what.

With this additional policy that will never happen. For around 50 quid for a year's cover, it makes for fantastic peace of mind. I'll be using it for my holiday car hire this year.

Just bought a car two weeks ago and a couple of days after buying it I noticed the drivers door had been resprayed, runs and dribbles. So I rang the dealer where I got the car from and he said he would book it into a bodyshop and get the paint flattened but if this doesnt work it would cost me £100 for a respray on the door. Now today I cleaned the car by hand again and noticed the laquer on the bonnet was peeling a little which wasnt there when I bought it?and also when cleaning I caught the bonnet on the corner with my nail and it indented the paint(like the paint hadn't set?)

The market is ok its the price for a private sale you would not get more than £7.5k there is a big difference between a dealer and a private sale. You cannot offer a proper gaurantee or HP only the car.By me the dealers are selling at around 8.5k for a low mileage mint car.The dealer has obviously offered you a low price or you would not be trying to sell it privately.
