With the solenoid bable connected and an eath then in the start mode the shaft of the starter will turn as the currect if fed through both the solenoid and the starter windings to allow the cog to engage the starter ring. The soleniod makes the main contact for the main power to be fed to the starter. Do the tests above and it should reveal the problem. Regards Peter

Hello,

Recently the temperature guage on my 1.6Zetec S Fiesta (51 plate) has fluctuated quite a lot. For example on a normal 20minute drive the guage would start normal, then go into the red, then back to the middle, then higher, then lower etc.... Read more

Thanks for the reply. I am guessing about £100 to get it sorted at the garage?

Why do virtually all manufacturers use black instrument dials which can be almost unreadable while driving in poor light. Ok, you can put the lights on to illuminate the dials, but it would be much better if they used white dials with black numerals and pointers. And no, I'm not partially sighted. Read more

In the past few months I've driven a VW Touran and a Seat Altea and in both cars, one of the clever dashboard options was to project a large digital speed readout in the centre of one of the dials (other options being mpg, fuel range, etc.) I found it very useful and was glad to have the choice - some drivers prefer analogue, others prefer digital; there's no one right answer! Also, getting used to a new car, in this case a hired one, means that memorising the position of the needle in peripheral vision isn't automatic(in my own car the 12 o'clock position equates to the maximum speed limit and I was used to it after four years), so a great big number display was bang on. One further bonus is that a precise digital display (together with cruise control) means less likelihood of being caught by the cash camera trap!

My C5 estate tilgate window lock releases when not required. The switch itself doesn't seem to want to work when you press it now either. I can get it to close after slmming it a few times. I can then quickly jump back in the car and press the central locking and it remains locked.

Any ideas? is it the switch or the lock or a broken wire somewhere?... Read more

I had the same problem with mine. I replaced the window switch which seems to have cured it. The big problem is getting the wiper arm off. I broke mine and had to cut it from the shaft as it had corroded on. It's quite a simple repair after that. The switch cost about £40 and a new arm £14.75+vat from a main dealer. couldn't get the parts anywhere else but you may have more luck than me.
