Hi!
I have a 1997 VW Polo 1.4CL.
I have noticed that the car has a whining noise that generally starts when in 5th gear and increases in pitch as the revs increase from about 40mph to 70mph (roughly 2000-3000 rpm).
The whining is not really noticeable in any other gear so I am starting to think gearbox… It does seem to be related to the transmission because if you take your foot off the accelerator or slip the car into neutral when the whining is at its worst it stops instantly.
The car did originally have a slight knocking noise which I assumed was a related problem, but I have since had both front wheel bearings changed which seems to have sorted the knocking but not the whining.
I would be grateful for any advice!
Incidentally I had a look at some past posts on the forum and there was one quite similar post (on a newer gar) but nobody seemed to have any ideas about the whining noise and it was more a discussion on what a garage is liable for!
Thanks!
