Hi I was recently in a non fault RTA 10/05/2010 the police crash investigation unit contacted me yesterday looking into the incident and the officer advised that my Full uk licence was refused/revoked in 2002! I am completely unaware of this and am now scheduled to be interviewed under caution on Monday 07/06/2010. I immediately spoke to DVLA and they stated it had been revoked due to a medical assessment apointment i failed to attend following an RTA in 2000. I have never recieved any notice to attend an assesment or indeed notice of revocation and for the last 8 years been oblivious to this!
Where do I stand ?please help this is making sick with worry. Thank you.

It's very unusual for the DVLA to back down on anything. Normally these cases go through due process.

You would have won in court but it is fortuitous (and an incredible long shot) that you found someone in the DVLA in a position of responsibility who was prepared to make an intelligent decision....

I have just about decided to sc*** my Omega because of the cylinder head problem. The question is what is it worth as sc***? One garage said I should get at least £150 when weighed in) with potentially another £20 - 30 for the catalytic converter and alloy wheels. However phoning a few official vehicle disposal adverts I am getting figures between £60 - £80. So what is its sc*** value? Read more

In the end I took the £80. That was collected as the car would no longer start. At least this way I know it should not come back to haunt me!

I`ve been somehat bemused over the alleged `anger` reportedly from the President - along with planned boycotts of BP stations.

Did anyone see the Union Jack being stomped on last night on the news? Presumably there was the thought that we too `worshipped` our flag - while the reallity being we don`t give a toss - and wear it as underpants.... Read more

Two points.... firstly large corporations like BP transcend nations and nationalistic thinking; it possibly has more nonUK shareholders than British ones.

Secondly, in such large [and occasionally small] pyramidical organisations the guys at the top who are ostensibly the bosses sometimes have no idea what their junior operatives and executives are up to......and perhaps cannot control them even when they do [Bhopal, Railtrack, Lehman, Soc Gen, IRA etc]....

My son was driving my Discovery in the dark and the rain, and turning right, when a young driver heading towards him lost control and slid into the front of our Disco. Disco was stationary at moment of impact. Damage to Disco: nil, damage to other car : plenty. My son called Police who breathalised both drivers (clear) and left.

The Insurers for other driver now making a claim against us, and our Insurers' solicitors are asking us to sign a form agreeing to them settling the case "on best terms available" - ie they are ready to cave in, because there were no witnesses ( my son's military passenger doesn't count apparently).... Re. HJ's comments about average speed cameras in the Telegraph column (published website, 2nd June):

"Readers have been done. Tends to happen at night when the roads are clear and there is no justification for cameras because no one is working on the road. In the daytime, the weight of traffic they cause usually enforces the speed limit imposed. ... Read more

There is no obligation at all for the insurer to agree to repair the car if they deem it uneconomic to do so - by which I mean they cannot get the repairs undertaken for less than the value of the car. If this happens they will write it off.

In these circumstances they can either:...

Amazing really to think of them gasping and flapping their wings along the route between the Cape and well, just `South Of Leeds`

I mean, If you were a chicken looking up as they overflew you - as you were say, pecking up a bit of corn in Istanbul and wondering if you could join them. Perhaps a glorious moment - up to around 6` - and then `plop` back into the dirt having succumbed to your Jungle Fowl genes.... Read more

Hi

I have an annoying intermittent squeak in the area of the alternator when first starting the car. It settles after a few minutes. Not the belt which is new and adjusted correctly. Would it be the bearings of the alternator itself? If so, can they be lubricated or am I looking at a completely new unit. Seems to be charging OK, so a shame to chuck the whole thing - might have to learn to live with the noise! Read more

Belt dressing spray is better.

You may have a shiny pulley on the crank or alternator and you squeek is this some above spray should stop it.
