Astra 1.7LSTD '97 - Squeaky alternator - Cornish Lass

Hi

I have an annoying intermittent squeak in the area of the alternator when first starting the car. It settles after a few minutes. Not the belt which is new and adjusted correctly. Would it be the bearings of the alternator itself? If so, can they be lubricated or am I looking at a completely new unit. Seems to be charging OK, so a shame to chuck the whole thing - might have to learn to live with the noise!

I still reckon it could be the belt. is it a squeal that stops after about 30 seconds? Try squirting some water on the pulley, if it stops your belt is slipping, they need to be really tight.

I agree with Peter N. If your engine is the Japanese one which was fitted in some Astra's then the belt does need to be murder tight. Instead of water I'd put dried chalk or baby powder on the belt to stop the squeaking and see it that helps.....

Belt dressing spray is better.

You may have a shiny pulley on the crank or alternator and you squeek is this some above spray should stop it.
