Due to a change in job internally it is highly likely SWMBO is going to have to hand back her company lease car she's had since last November (59 plate Golf 2.0 TDI 140 SE, 15,000 miles) as we suspect we won't get a good deal on a final payment after 8 months of a 36 month plan.
Therefore we've started to have a look around at what's out there. Having persuaded her not to go back to a Yaris (capable, reliable but boring!) she now interested in Minis.
With a budget of £7k we've seen a couple we like the look of. One's a first generation (R50) 55 plate Cooper with the Chilli pack and uprated 17" Mini alloys. It's done 37.5k miles.... Read more
An update.
By the time we contacted the owner of the 55 plate R50 it had gone. We viewed the 56 plate R56 last weekend. Externally the car was in good nick. However the headlining on the driver's side of the car was extremely dirty. The driver's grab handle was covered in an oily gunk. I couldn't work out what it was. The saleman said he hadn't noticed it before! There were also bits and pieces missing like the back shelf and the tyre compressor. It was a one owner vehicle with the previous owner being a leasing company. We decided to walk away....
The Multifunction display on top of dashboard has dimmed on the oneside.
Is there a back light LED behind the display causing the problem.? Read more
Is it legal to install a meter that doesn't give change? After all, train ticket machines can manage it! I resent paying a quid to park if I can't find a 50p coin. Read more
Screen washers stopped working today. Bottle was full and pump running but no water coming out. Disconnected tubing under bonnet and connected a large syringe filled with water and back flushed system. No effect. Blew a syringe full of air through, blockage cleared and washers working as before.
Maybe its a well known trick, but worth sharing again as much easier than dismantling the washer bottle to get at the pump. Read more
Better than a BMW cheapened Rover 25 I once had, a total bucket compared with the well build 200 that preceeded it.

Help !!!
Power steering pump is working fine as is the water pump and the belt is in good condition However on starting the car there is a nasty sort of metal grinding sound that lasts for 3 or 4 seconds and then goes away ( can get it to last longer if I hold the key when the engine has started )...I suspect that the Drive belt Tensioner pulley is the cause and want to replace it...I need to know if I can just purchase the Tensioner Pulley and replace it with ease... eg can I take the belt off and unbolt the Tensioner replace it and put the belt back on ? or is the task a nightmare.... Your adive would be Very Very welcome... Thankyou for taking the time to Read ... Russell.... Read more
My Focus seems to have aquired a knock on the steering. I first noticed it when parking in a tight spot and having the steering on full right-hand lock and it knocked when it reached the 'stop'. Since then, I've noticed that the steering isn't as precise as it used to be and on checking the tyres they had worn on the inside edge. I got the tracking checked but it was apparently fine, but the vagueness is still there and now it will knock when the wheels are straight ahead when you shake the wheel side-to-side - more noticeable with the engine off. I can't find any play in either the rack, the track rod ends or anything else on the front end, so am at a loss to what it can be. The only thing I can think of is a fault in the rack itself, but with there being no obvious 'play' I can't be sure. Can anyone give any suggestions what it might be? Read more
Could be the suspension tie rods worn.
We've checked these and there doesn't seem to be any play or stiffness to them.

Congratulations, and many thanks for coming back to tell us (not evrybody does).
Good to see some long-term thinking happening (protection of reputation) but a pity it had to be only after pressure had been exerted....
