I need a new medium family car - EmDee

I hate buying cars, but the 13yo Rover 216 I'm driving at the moment is on its last legs so I've got to bite the bullet. Some additional boot space over the Rover would be useful, but there's only a small space on the drive, so a large family car won't fit, so a Focus/Golf, etc it is .

I've a budget of 10-12K for a used 5dr hatch still under mfr warranty. It'll do 12K a year, mostly on A-roads with few short trips, and little town driving (commute when I do it, is 50miles round trip). I'm now wary of diesels having lurked on forums like this! Entry petrols look sluggish on paper though, and larger ones look thirsty now cars have evolved to be so big&heavy. I like to get where I'm going, so would find a sluggish car frustrating. Not looking for a hot hatch - the Rover is nippy enough, but is a bit loud on the m'way. In the last three cars I've driven regularly, I've tended to get the official combined consumption figure. The more I look, the more I'm frozen with indecision, but the various problems on the Rover mean I'm going to have to make my mind up.

We usually buy nearly new, and keep for 10+ years, so resale is not a concern. I've got no badge prejudices - so long as whatever it is isn't rubbish and breaks down. I may be able to get a deal on a Toyota via work contacts (bought our other car, a Verso this way), although the Auris is the only thing that fits the bill. Also have a relative who is a Vauxhall mechanic who can keep Luton cars running cheaply.

What say you?

Not helpful at all Em Dee

But you appear to be near as bad at me regarding making a car purchase decision.

Ps

I think the Auris is probably on the money we have looked at one several times, need room in the "boot" for a wheelchair is the only quibble.

good luck

Kia Ceed. If you buy one under their Approved scheme you get 7 years warranty from the date you buy, NOT balance of 7 years. This should be very important for someone like you who is keeping their car for this length of time.

The Auris and Ceed are both good suggestions: the advantage of a Focus is that there are more around and (partly because of that) depreciation is severe so you'll get a newish one for your budget.

If you want more room without much more length, and plenty of oomph, put the Skoda Octavia 1.8T on your shortlist.

Skoda Octavia 1.6 TD CR. Nicer than a Focus for me. Same tax.

It might cost a bit more, but how about a Volkswagen Jetta. Reliability, build quality, styling and low depreciation are the main attractions, also it has a huge boot. From the same company, if you like things a bit more sporting, the SEAT Leon has all the attributes of the Jetta but is a more exciting drive. The Hyundai i30 beats both of these on cost, has a five year warranty, is very well equipped and the dealers are good, but I wouldn't on past experience keep a Hyundai after the warranty runs out as you get some expensive bills.

The i30 is basically the same vehicle as the Kia Ceed, in which they have confidence to give a 7 year warranty.

I would think you'd be able to find a NEW one of either for under £11000.

I with my 12 year old / 218,000 mile motor NEED to buy sommat

Currently Swithering between a Skoda Yeti 2.0 diesel FWD and

..... more sensibly (sigh) an Octavia Estate (for wheelchair) with the 1.6 Cr diesel & dry 7 speed DSG ( for the Missis)

Sigh, but I WANT a Yeti

But the Octavia at the same nominal list is "VAt free" so about £3,500 cheaper, sigh.

How long before i can buy a 1.6 CR Yeti with the DSG?

sigh.
