other halfs clutch is slipping badly on her 53 reg Fusion so do i need to replace the slave cyl (if it has one ) and the clutch or is it just the clutch and is it a pig of a job to do,also noticed i have an oil leak from the cyl head-rocker cover area and there is a pool of oil on top of the gear box.could this have leaked into the clutch ?
i dont mind having a go myself as i have had a little bit of experience changing a 106d clutch and 2 escort van gearboxes.
any advise greatfully received. Read more
I have a 2000 1.6 zetec focus which has had a very annoying (and somewhat embarrasing) squeaking noise from the rear drums every time i brake.. Whether hot/cold, rain/shine, it always happens! Its getting louder and becoming quite annoying when in traffic or driving through town. It happens when i press the brake pedal and happens again when i depress the pedal. Can anyone please tell me if there is a solution to this?
Also, (whilst i'm here), there is also a very unusual whine from the engine every time i depress the clutch pedal?!?! It goes away when I let go of the clutch. And even when i am driving and go to change gear, clutch pedal down, a strange whine comes from the engine and then goes away once the clutch is released.. It seems very odd, never heard of this on any of my previous cars. Again, can anyone please shed any light on this?
Any help on the above would be very much appreciated!!! Read more
My 1.8i Focus with rear drums suffers from the same loud squeaking problem. In my case the problem is solved by cleaning out the brake dust and putting a dab of copperslip grease on the contact points, so try and clean out your drums as described above. I have to do this every 1-2 years to keep the brakes quiet.
The recommended way of removing the rear drums on a Focus in order to get at the brake mechanism is to remove the 4 bolts which hold the stub axle to the backing plate and remove the drum and stub axle in one piece. This avoids the need to undo/redo the hub nut (which is extremely tight) and also avoids the risk of damaging the bearings. Only do this if you're competent and have the correct tools though, for obvious reasons !
MyTDi estate makes a sound as though someone is playing the drums in the engine bay (!) at idle but does not affect performance on the road. A mate has suggested the EGR valve. Will it do any harm or should I replace it?
Also, the suspension on this car is truly dreadful (its on 16 inch wheels). Are there any easy ways of improving it? Is the Passat any better? Many thanks folks.

Sorry folks, I was a bit vague. I meant that the ride/suspension is very hard eg: when going over even very small speed humps the driver feels it far more than say in my previous M reg Pug 405 estate. Can different tyre pressures or maybe a set of 15 inch wheels help?
The drum noise is definitely the EGR valve. I removed the engine cover today and could feel it making the noise perhaps more accurately described as a quacking sound! Having removed it the innards were caked in sooty engine oil so I will try a good soak overnight and hope that cures it. By the way, its a TDi 115.
HELP !!! How do i get at the n.s.f rear captive nut on the front subframe ?? It loosened off then started to spin and i now need to tighten it again. Read more
under the carpet and sound proofing there will be an indented square. break away the tar and you will see thin strips of metal you can use tin snips to cut these away then you will be able to get to the nut, good luck it worked for me
Its MOT time coming up again and ive noticed that the rubber on my drivers side front wiper rubber has a split can i just buy a rubber insert for the wiper or do i have to purchase the whole thing which are very expensive @ £25+ any thoughts on this .
also i think i might need 2 rear 205/55/16/w tyres any recommendations on these as well would be great

Agree with Hamsafar, Goodyear Excellence tyres are a superb choice for the Focus II. I have them fitted all round on my Focus II and the Goodyear Excellence are superior to the Michelins they replaced.
First off, new poster here, with as much car knowledge as a new born baby.
My heaters in the car don't seem to work proper, they blow cold air 95% of the time. And once in a blue moon they give me some (little) heat for 20mins max when the car has run for 10-15 mins. The cabin never gets warm...
I thought it was the heater control valve that everyone seems to have had problems with but then again I do get periodic heat from it... could this still be defective. I don't know how it works but I imagine its like it switches on or off depending on the setting... and the heat gives the impression that it is doing that...
I then had a brain wave and thought it was a blockage due to the inconsistency of the heating, but couldn't find nowt in the pipes, which one is hot.
The temp gauge seems to work proper, as in it moves when the engine starts and stays constant 1/4 of the way.
Will it fail the MOT if I don't get this sorted? as its due in Feb...
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It may have been modified or something, the back of the car shouldn't say anything, if it is the 1242cc it should have a 16v badge on the back. If the V5 says 1242cc unless its been changed and DLVA not been informed it is the 1.25 Zetec you have. I know its confusing but there are completly different engines, the 1.3 is a Ford block from the late 50's (made until 2002) and the 1.25 is a modern Yamaha design.
Good luck with finding the problem, I am sure some mechanics can tell you further as there are ways you can test the control panal.
It is extremly common this fault and when I bought my fiesta the first thing I did is checked the heater worked, sadly it also meant I missed more important things like the reverse light.
Evening all,
I've got a meeting in Solihull (B90 4LH for you Google Map fans) at 09:30 on Thursday morning. I'll be travelling from Liverpool so common sense tells me to take M57/M62/M6/M6 toll/M42. However, I haven't done the M6 gamble for some time...... Was banking on leaving home at 06:30 to give me a 60 minute buffer in case of traffic problems.
Is this enough - or should I accept the inevitable and take my sleeping bag?
Cheers,

Well, I set off at 06:15 and arrived in Solihull at 08:30, a full 60 minutes early.... This was using M57/M62/M6/M6 Toll/M42.
The return journey commenced at 13:30 and I walked in the door at home at 16:10.
So, all in all - not too bad......
Ps. The Alfa didn't miss a beat on its first real run out.....

I wonder if you may be able to shed some light on the problems I am having with this beastie. It belongs to the son of one of my regulars and finance is an issue. Initially it had a problem with high idle speed and a stutter/lurch which he cured himself by fitting a complete throttle body from another car with a better injector and after I had cleaned up the idle motor idled well and drove nicely for a short while. Reading the codes I had 10 separate codes mainly for, I suspect, sensors etc disconnected with the ignition on. All cleared off except for one "Battery Voltage" (No codes only a narrative) Battery voltage is not bad at 14.02 but battery voltage on live data varies between 8 and 15 volts. I've not physically measured the voltage at the ecu pin yet. The multi function relay has been replaced. My gut feeling is an ECU problem but am I right in thinking the immobiliser is integral with these? Its a Weber -Marelli 16F.EB. Incidentally he purchased the car with these problems

Ah, I've got the wrong end of the stick, again - I thought the drift was to pop down the breakers and fit the first one that came to hand.
Looking closer, Andrew does talk about getting a new unit.
My mistake.
The comment about the earth for the lamba still stands though :o}
Can anyone tell me why my car (insured in my name for my son to drive) would be impounded when it is fully insured - but my son was allowing an uninsured driver to take the wheel - (off-road) to help teach how to park? What will my penalty be - anyone know? Read more
I hope the original poster has got his car back and forgotten to update us - storage is charged per day.
Quite possibly this could have contaminated the clutch, but generally only if it leaks at the point the gearbox meets the engine.
Renew the cam cover gasket and make sure the cover is not damaged.
I doubt it's any more of a pig than the 106. There's a Haynes available for this car now so I believe.
