Hi All

A colleague of mine is looking to buy a 1999 V5 Passat (Here in Holland) and is wondering what to look for from a mechanical perspective.

Also does the V5 engine have a cam chain or belt and if its a belt what are the intervals for replacement?

Thanks in advance.

Hi just to let you know that if your fuel gauge does not show a full tank after filling to the brim, making sure to remember not to pull the nozzle out and put that little squirt extra in to round the numbers up (stupid capless filling making a mess on the forecourt), it is probably due to the fuel sender unit being faulty.

Quick fix:- turn ignition off and back on works 9/10

When I refuel my car I fill it until it cuts off, round it up to a whole £ if I can and go and pay and that is it. If the gauge doesn't show full when I turn the ignition I just drive away. I don't get out and try and put more in - I have just filled it so I know it is full. Have I misread your refuellng method in some way?

My back one is fairly new and is in perfect condition but my front is in poor state, it is easy to read but some over zealous copper but declare its ilegal and I could get 3 points on my fresh licence.

I have seen this site who can do them for £8.50 but would it be legal?

I know there are very very strict rules on regarding fonts and text etc.

Thanks.

Also how much is it likely to cost at a motor factors? I might get some for my dads at the same time as they are both in a poor state (mentioned on MOT). Read more

£10?

That's nearly 3% of the car's purchase price, I believe :-)

Don't forget to keep a record of everything you spend on the car in the next six months - it might make salutary reading.....

Hi all

Does anybody knows if it is normal that after i turn off my Ford C-Max and close the door the display with Kms stays green lighted on?

Should it turn off?

I just got my c-max.

Are you sure it is always on? My focus display goes off after about 10 to 15 minutes. One school of thought is that this "feature" is so that buisiness users can see their mileage after switching off.

Hello...

I've got a '94 Celica 2ltr GT (import) and its currently bouncing like a kangaroo with parkinsons.
I had it booked into the garage on Friday but as its an import their reader 'didn't fit'. To book it in to another garage i'd need to take another day off work but its very busy and i'm still in my probation period so can't afford to take too many days off.

I'll try and give as much info as possible....

1 - on occasion if i nail it in second you can hear it pop / backfire slightly
2 - judders and struggles to pick up speed in all gears
3 - can be ok 'sometimes'
4 - doesn't clear up after the car has warmed up
5 - the lights will fade slightly and come back on

also, what i have been told is the relay light, comes on occasionally for 5 minutes and then goes off. The light is a rectangle with 2 lines in each side and 'squiggles' coming out of the top.

Any ideas as to what it could be and anything a mechanical moron could try whilst waiting to get it into the garage?

cheers

The light is the cat overheat light and suggests your problem is ignition related and unburnt fuel is getting into the cat and burning. Start by checking plugs and leads looking for burn marks down the side of the white ceramic part of the plug. I dont know the extent of your expertise but measuring the resistance of each lead would be a good test for an open circuit lead. Also check cap and rotor for cracks or tracking.

Hello.

does anybody know how to disable the steering lock on a '94 L plate 316?
My lodgers ignition barrel has recently given out. He called the AA out and they took the steering column panel off and showed him how to start the car. He has to remove the steering lock, start the ignition and then put the key back in the ignition whilst driving but on occasions the steering lock comes back on.
Tomorrow (26th) he has to do a 200 mile trip for a 2 day training course, and then the return trip a couple of days later and doesn't want to risk the lock coming on during the trip.
He's already booked and paid for the trip and also booked and paid for the hotel room so he stands to lose a chunk of money if he can't make it. Being 19 hiring a car until he can get the lock sorted is going to be very difficult

thanks in advance.

Would it be possible to get a bit more info about doing it?
Roughly how long would that take?
And is it possible to just break the lock by brute force of the steering wheel?

I am told that Mercedes Benz World and the MB sales and servicing operations at Brooklands were closed for some time today (Tuesday) because of an 'incident' with a Smart Electric car.

I was told that it had caught fire in the workshop, necessitating the fire brigade being called and the building had to be evacuated.

Every year there are fires caused by lights on Christmas trees, how often do you question how safe they are?

Of course electric smarts are safe!

Pretty much any Toyota 4 stud wheels will fit, certainly corolla 1994 - 2000 have the same pattern.

Is there a company that exchanges alloy wheels, or somehwere reliable where I can send mine to be remanufactured? I would consider buying brand new original wheels if I could find a supplier other than a Merc dealer.

My rear AMG alloys (tyre size 245/17 -40) are flaking on the outer rim. No kerb damage, although the fronts have very slight grazing.
