I think this is what is causing my squeaky brakes.
How much should a garage charge me to replace the rear disks? (the pads are new - only done last week)
Is it possible to grind down the lip of the disk or is there another alternative?

Just been trawling the net for a good value second hand family car and noticed that a brand new Dodge Avenger 2.0SE is available for ....£7995 no strings attached. UK cars and full warranty from a Chrysler/Dodge dealer? Surely they can't be that bad at that price? Read more
Your reason for buying it would be the same as mine - someone else is paying and you do very high mileage. Whatever car you buy won't be worth much after three years and 100,000 miles so get something as new as possible for as little as possible.

I had the deep joy of taking part in the Freewheel festival today. For those of you out in the boondocks, they shut all roads in London on the route from Buckingham Palace to Tower Hill, leaving it to 50,000 or so cyclists. It was brilliant. What a way to see London if you are a tiny kid or a Granny (and there were loads of them too!)
The variety of bikes was amazing, from penny farthings to huge great extended butchers bikes carrying 1/2 dozen people.
Weather was glorious too.
Obviously must have caused inconvenience to motorists hoping to get through a busy part of town. Sorry!
But, all in all, a great success. I will be back next year Read more
Hi, Have a 307 estate 110 hdi with fault codes 1447, 1448 +1537 stored in engine ECU together with all usuall DPF blocked symptems.
Also have fault code 8332 stored in additive ECU. The additive level in the tank is about 2 3rds full and both magnets are present on the filler cap. Using a friends scanner the DPF shows a soot loading of 24? What i need to know is does the pressure sensor need adapting in after replacement? and should I be able to hear the additive pump run after 15 seconds of the cap being removed? Also can the filter be cleaned out with hot water as rumours let me believe or is fitting a new filter the only cure?
All help much appreciated. Read more
Yes ive also done that, Twice! but it only cures the problem for one day!
Hi all,
my 1.8 51 reg almera has developed a squeak or squeal. I hear it when changing gear -- usually changing up, I think. After changing gear, and bringing the clutch back up, giving it some gas, there's a squeak or squeal that I can hear -- I can't quite locate it, but it may be from left side of car.
it may be that a slower clutch return helps reduce the squeal, but I couldn't swear to it.
the car has recently had a full service in which all brake pads and discs were replaced -- the brakes had been binding.
could it be brakes binding again? Or does it sound like something else?
cheers Read more
This commonly happens on the Almera Tino when in motion and its because your putting too much force on the throttle or the axles are not lubricated with oil and i usually hear one passing by squeaking when i wait for the bus. This is NOT the brakes binding.
There is no evidence in the manual.
Hi - have to bleed the brakes on a 1972 camper van but don't really want to depress the footpedal too much for fear of damaging the seals by pushing into rough places they have not been for years and ending up with a very expensive master cylinder replacement - this happened on another old car I had. I think you used to be able to get a cap and tube that would pressurise the reservoir with a foot pump or if I recall by connecting to the spare tyre.
Sure I can eventually work something out but this may be a common problem with a solution so any advice would be very welcome.
Many thanks Read more
If you are that worried about the master cylinder, you should replace it, especially if such an old car only has one braking system. Can't cost more than £50. If you are bleeding it anyway, it is only another hours work.
Eazibleed kits are fantastic. I have used one for 20 years and the best £20 you will spend. Always use a litre of fluid so you can really power flush all the old stuff out. I also double bleed it, so the peddle is rock hard.
Hi, I often browse these excellent forums but rarely have anything of further value to add so just lurk! But hoping to get some advice...
While I love cars, I'm also a keen cyclist, and yesterday afternoon was out cycling around London. Going along a straight section of road at about 15 miles an hour in a straight line usual positon about 3/4 metre from the curb, modest traffic and road ahead clear of traffic, when bang I'm suddenly aware that a car must have driven squarely into my back wheel at significantly higher speed then I was going (i.e. not clipped me as he passes, but straight into me), i'm suddenly explosively propelled forward, next thing I know I'm lying in the road and fortunately the car that hit me has stopped just behind me and not run me over.
Fortunately a few good samaritans came to my aid (if any of you happen to read this thank you so much). Whereas the - I'll be polite - idiot who hit me I overhear telling a passer by that I had just ridden into the curb and come off. So basically I'm left lying in the road, until the Police and Ambulance turn up. I'm carted off to hospital, fortunately its just shock, cuts, bruises and a cracking headache
Now in years of driving and cycling I've fortunately never been involved in any accidents, so don't know what to do next!
The driver did stop but I was in no position to exchange details. I spoke to the Police this morning, but they said they could not give me his details (other then reg plate) until the RTA department had started investigating - is this right?
How do I claim against him? My bike is wrecked - back wheel competely smashed where he impacted me, which at least proves he hit me. My bike is covered under my household contents, but I don't know if that covers claims against others? His vehicle does not come up on the insurance database as being covered.
So how do I claim against him? Do I get his details from the Police? Do I leave it to my household contents insurer to try and contact his insurance (if he is insured)?
I also want to know if he was drunk, using a mobile, or to be charged with dangerous or careless driving - can I ask the Police to confirm what is happening with him?
I'm also trying to make sense of how he could of driven straight into the back of me and not seen me (it was 4pm, sunny, I wear bright clothing on a bright bike), I'm sure the road must be covered by CCTV, is there anyway I can ask to see this? Who do I ask?
Thanks for any advice, sorry for the lengthy post.

I once clipped, just, the rear wheel of an unlit bike on a roundabout with defective street lighting in exactly the wrong place making a dark patch. The young woman rider was wearing dark clothing, and if she hadn't looked round at me I wouldn't have seen her at all until much too late.
She didn't fall right off, but bruised a shin slightly against a pedal and was of course a bit shocked. I stopped and apologised, helped get her bike on the pavement, explained what had happened from my angle, told her I would pay for the very slightly (but visibly) bent rear wheel, and asked if she wanted to wait for plod or any help in getting home. She said no to both. A passing ambulance offered help which she also refused. I gave her my coordinates and we went our separate ways.
A week later plod called and said he wanted a word about an alleged traffic incident. I recounted all that had happened and said it was a bit annoying of her to have reported the accident now when she hadn't wanted to at the time. Plod agreed and said no further action would be taken. She sent me the bike bill and I sent her a cheque, with a courteous but slightly irritated letter.
I think some friends got at her after the event and put her up to making a bid for cash compensation, but her heart wasn't really in it because she was a decent individual, if a bit confused and easily led.
We have to get a new car for my wife (something with a bit of performance nearly new). The question is what will the car market do over the next six months. Since we will be buying something that will be a bit thirsty costly to run I am thinking of buying something for £1000-1500 to keep her mobile until early next years and then spending real money (£10k or more) when hopefully prices have dropped more. What do people think?

Surely it's far too much effort to find, buy, insure, and then sell an old car again in 12 months' time, to hopefully save a few quid on the kind of car you actually want right now?!

it's not the new discs that cause the calipers to sieze but corrosion so if you fit new discs without replacing siezed calipers then the new discs will soon get worn as the caliper pistons stick in the on mode. you may be lucky and your calipers are perfectly ok. jag.
