The coolant hose which connects the throttle body > heater matrix > cylinder head has a small split / hole in it. I replaced it a few years ago with a genuine VW part, which cost about £50, but its now leaking again.

Is there anyway I can repair the hose instead of buying a new one for £50? Read more

Also try GSF car parts - sometimes better & cheaper (in my opinion) than Eurocarparts.

Simple Q this - I'm hard-wiring my RoadPilot in and there's one red & one black wire for power / ground. I presume these are to go to the fuse box or something, can someone gie me a steer on how? I have basic automotive electical skills having installed amps, speakers, head units, handsfree kits etc but this is the first time I've needed to take power. The wires are very fine so don't look like they should go to the battery!

Hi,

I wondered if any of the experts out there could help me. Last week my polo overheated and needed a new thermostat and housing which has been fixed but since ive had the car back from the garage a new problem has emerged.

When im driving along and gaining speed, I change gear and sometimes the car judders (the same sort of juddering if the car was going to stall if it was in too high a gear) so I have to slow the car, go down a gear and then try again. It doesnt happen all the time and usually happens when im asking the car to go over 40 miles an hour and in 4th and 5th gear. This problem has never happened before and I wondered if anyone out there with any knowledge of these cars has any answer or idea as to what the problem might be.

It has done over 102,000 miles and so I appreciate problems happen when the car gets old and has been used a lot but only since the overheating arose has this problem emerged.

Id really appreciate any feedback

Thanks all

Hi,

Did you find out what the problem was/is?
We have a 1999 1.4 with only 23,000 miles and it seems to have developed the same symtoms.

After a bit of advice please. I've just looked at a 1999 1.8 Zafira for Mrs P. Its all very tidy but the fluid in the expansion tank was very dark/black in colour . There didnt seem to be any white gooh there or in the Oil filler cap etc, but could this be an indication of HGF problems ?

Many thanks

Maybe somebody has changed the coolant at some point in time ( pink stuff is 5 year lifetime IIRC) and put old skool blue stuff in, or maybe its more Radweld than coolant. Does sound a bit iffy either way.

There's often reference in the Backroom to "main dealers". What's the difference between a "main" dealer and any other type of franchised dealer? In fact what other categories of franchised dealers are there? Read more

jc2

The smaller ones are usually known as "Retail Dealers" and are usually,but not exclusively,supplied with cars by "Main Dealers".

hi there

I'm having a few problems with my rover 620 sdi and hoping someone out there can help.

My car cut out on me and has failed to start since.
Ive checked the stop solenoid and wiring for chaffing but that seems all ok.
fuel is getting to the pump ok and pressurising whilst the engine is being turned over but nothing is getting to the injectors or out of the back of the pump if you disconnect the injector pipes.

We've taken the plunger out of the stop solenoid to completely eliminate that but still nothing out to the injector.

We are now stuck and hoping some kind person with a little more knowledge than ourselves can point us in the right direction.

Many thanks in advance for a any help and tips offered. Read more

hi, the timing belt is intact and everything appears to be ok although there is a clicking noise thats coming from the underside of the pump. The pump has now been changed this morning but its still the same, fuel getting to the pump but not out of it to the injectors

A rear window motor, driver's side, has stopped working, fortunately (?) with the window closed. I found the earth wire was broken where it enters the door, from the B post, and soldered it back together. I now have power to the motor (verified at the motor's plug, but the motor only clicks and does not work. To remove the winder motor my Haynes manual suggests that I first remove the window glass. To do this the manual tells me to lower the glass so that I can reach the clamps holding the glass to the mechanism but I am unable to do this. Does anyone know how I can remove the glass, or do I really need to do this? Read more

Hi,
The time's come for the Mother-in-Law to get rid of her ageing Corsa, and she'd like me to find her a replacement. Criteria are (not very exciting I'm afraid)

* Automatic
* Easy to drive and park, she's a fairly tentative driver
* Compact, but enough space to carry her 3 young grandchildren, so 3 proper rear seatbelts very handy, and 5 doors
* Easy to get in and out of, she's not very nimble these days
* Low-maintenance, reliable, hassle-free
* She does a few motorway miles, so must be able to cope out of town

The following do not matter!

* Performance, fun to drive
* Style
* Toys (though basics like electric front windows & central locking would be handy)

Her budget including trade-in for the Corsa should be about £6500.

I am torn between the following - not a very sexy selection really (though that's hardly the point!)

* Nearly-new Fiat Panda - SWMBO's got a 100HP one and I love it so I'm a bit biased but they may be very hard to find with 3 rear seat belts
* Nearly-new Kia Picanto - maybe too underpowered to cope with the motorway?
* Fairly new Daihatsu Sirion - based on the Yaris so should be pretty reliable, but would have to settle for slightly older model
* Honda Jazz - she's said she likes them, and I know they've got a reputation for being reliable, but obviously on this budget she'd be looking at a much older car so potential for higher running costs?

What would you do? Any I've missed that you think would be better?

Cheers
