Just read an old post regarding cam belt tensioning on a Peugeot 406 2 litre hdi. I was looking to buy a tool to do mine but after reading the comments, realise that I maybe don't really need one.

Can anyone confirm that the 5mm deflection with firm thumb pressure is sufficient?

Incidentally, do you know of any reasonable priced tool that would do the job other than the expensive electronic seems tester?

Really would appreciate any advice.

45 degree twist between the cam and the fuel pump wheels. The engine must be cold - this is important because the belt tightens as the engine expands - quite a bit.

I have someone that reads this stuff (underpaid may-be) and prepares executive summaries - I'll let you know.

It doesn't seem to list every model either - a neighbour has just bought an 02 Almera and this model isn't listed.

the power runs through a resistor to give the various speeds if he resistor is u s then all you will get is speed 4 as this is 12v straight through as you dont have speed 4 the its a power supply issue did you check to see if any power to switch when you had it out

Hello

My t reg astra has failed its mot on the cat, rusted exhaust mount and brake pipes, i have been quoted 700 - 900 by 2 garages and dont think the car is worth this.... it has general wear and tear, 78000, not full service history, not had a cambelt change etc.

Anyway i've been offered 200 ( by one of the garages) and really dont know what to do. I dont expect much but cant help feeling that i am going to make someone a big profit or should i be grateful for this?

it failed on emissions but has been tested by vauxhall to check and come back on the cat. They said the manifold was part of it so it makes sense. thankyou for the link i will look.

We recently got this S reg Clio as a runaround. It smells a bit fumey inside when on the move. No visible clouds from the exhaust. Had the exhaust system checked out for any leaks & that's fine. Can't smell anything under the hood when engine running. Are they all like this letting in the traffic fumes? Leaves a taste in the throat. Any advice words of wisdom? Read more

Is the gaitor round the gear stck sealed ok, any holes in it? This can suck an oily smell into the car from the engine bay. Likewise check all the grommets in the bulkhead where cables etc go through.

Hi, i need to replace my current car with a cheap second hand car. The most important factor is reliability! I am 20 years old and have 2 years no claims so insurance is still a factor in what car i want. i would also like the car to be good on mpg and have reasonable power maybe a 1.4 or 1.6. I like the look of Focus' but i am concerned as many have done high mileage and are quite old. i would like to spend around a £1000 but i could stretch to 2k.

Any recommendations?

Thanks, Carl Read more

Because of a operation my car has already been sitting for 2 months. Its going to be another 2 months before I can drive again.

Its a 1999 1.8 Vectra. When I start to drive it again how should I do it?
Take it for a long run straight away, short runs, pump the brakes, kick the bumper??
I have no idea... thats why I'm asking (",) Read more

Leave the handbrake off but leave it in gear - this will prevent the brakes
from seizing.

That one has been done. My daughter inlaw was going to take it for a drive fro me and after 2 weeks the handbrake has seized. So handbrake is now off and left in gear.

This is my first post for quite some time now (years!), and it?s a question that I?ve asked before but I?m still unclear about the answer.

On my past trips to France I stuck to using branded diesel (Shell V-Power & BP Ultimate) because I was unsure if I was able to use Gazole, the opinon from the Forum was that it was OK to use and that it was the same as regular diesel here in the UK.

Now I?m about to go on holiday to France again and was going to fill up with Gazole while I was out there, BUT when I filled up at my local station yesterday I noticed (for the first time!) that on the fuel filler-flap it states that I should NOT use Bio-diesel or Gazole.
I?m now confused as to whether I can or can?t use it, I have a VW Golf 2.0 TDI (2006) which I thought would have been setup to accept this kind of fuel.

I?m sure other BR?s are running this type of engine so should I ignore the info on the flap or not?

Following a sucessful repair to my Mondeo aircon I just wondered about the design of a pump that cycles on/off frequently. I'd noticed mine do it and then read a comment in another thread about a Vauxhall that modern systems have this design.

What is the purpose of this as it would just seem to increase the chance of compressor clutch wear/faults??

>>>>I managed to avoid the C5 trap

Me too. I'd spent 9mths looking for the best Xantia TD Estate left in the country with no success, then 3mths casually looking at C5s but was very wary of the issues carried by many early ones.

Out of the blue this petrol Mondeo was offered by friends in the next village and I thought why not for a year or so and see how things go.

Missing the diesel performance already ... and the ride... very much missing the Xazntia ride!!

The good lady still has her TD Xsara Exclusive which continues giving perfect service... she wants a C4 next.
