Hi, first post - hoping a few of you folks can share your experience and a little advice with me!

I'm considering a job where there's a company car as part of the package. An opt-out isn't on the table (yet) so I'm trying to understand the financial implications properly so I can go back and negotitate properly.

Car being offered is a Vauxhall Vectra 1.9 SRI (150) Diesel Estate, and the offer states they would cover all the running expenses of the car for business mileage, and I would be responsible for your personal mileage.

First time I've been offered a company car so my head is battered with questions!!!

1. Running expenses.

Typically with a company car offer is insurance for personal usage included? When they say I'd be responsible for my personal mileage is this usually just fuel?

2. Fuel.

The offer is that I would purchase all the fuel and recharge the employer for the business mileage @ £0.14/mile. Firstly, as this is above the 11p advisory fuel rate for this cc engine, can anyone advise the tax implication to me?

With this in mind should I be pushing for a higher rate, especially given that with diesel at £5.77 per gallon based on 43.8mpg (Vauxhall combined rate - 10%) my costs would be just over 13p and if (when) diesel goes to £1.35 per litre (within two months at present) I'd be out of pocket. And that's before working out what the net rate per mile would be after I pay tax if applicable!!! What's the best plan here?

3. Company car tax.

The salary being offered is £36k. Does this mean I'd pay the 20% rate of company car tax shown on the calculator on this site, and that to calculate my final take home I just take this from my net without the car tax? I want to push for a higher salary, but does this mean that I'd be paying the 40% rate because I'd go over the 20% tax threshold?

4. Opt Out

Should I try to get this on the table? Let's say 30k business mileage per year. Any idea of the value I should pitch, or how to determine this?

Any help on the best deal to negotiate from here would be much appreciated!

Cheers,

1) Insurance is included, but check if there's an excess - some companies have high excess or even only insure the cars 3rd party and then expect the employee to pay say £250 or £500 in the event they can't recover the cost from someone else (note that it's "can't recover", not "at fault" - so if someone hits and runs then it could be down to you).

2) I'm not really sure about this, but logically you would have to pay tax on the excess over the approved rate. The rates are reviewed very 6mths and large employers are apparently pushing HMRC to allow them to pay their employees more.

3) Assuming you're just on the basic personal allowance and have no other income you'll end up with approx a zero tax code, and as the 20% band is 0-£36K then you might just escape! As pointed out in the post above, it's only the excess of £36K that is taxed at 40%, s it will be neither here nor there for you.

4) Agree again with the above poster. 30K business miles, plus your private mileage, takes a heck of a lot out of a car. Do some comparisons at www.cashorcar.co.uk but my view was the peace of mind benefit of having a company car is worth at least £100/mth, so you're going to need a big allowance to make that worthwhile. The company can probably lease the Vectra's at quite a good rate and they're not going to want you to opt out if it's going to cost them more. Also, company cars are a really good deal for 20% tax payers - they cost 40% tax payers twice as much.

Opting out makes more sense for 40% tax payers. Two ways of doing it:
1) Fixed monthly allowance, varies a lot, but could be £300-£600 per month. This is effectively added to your salary and then taxed at your normal rate (so watch for breaching that 40% barrier!). On top of that there's usually a business mileage allowance of maybe 15p-20p. As it's your own car you can claim *tax* back on the difference between what you get paid and 40p for first 10K miles and 25p for all other mileage. So for 20% tax payer, getting 15p/mile you would get a tax refund of 5p for 10K miles and 2p for 10K+ (those refunds obviously double if you're paying tax at 40%, but then so does the tax on your monthly allowance).

2) Mileage only - the company may pay you the full 40p for 10Kmiles and 25p for 10K+ and those payments are tax free.

If you're sure of doing high mileage then 2) can work out best, depending on the monthly allowance offer you get. However be aware for both of them that the Government has suggested it might do away with the 40p rate, although there is much clamouring for it to be increased.

Off to the Nurburgring next month, for a bit of a play in my neighbours Nissan 200sx track car,and as we live only 60 miles from Hull,we have decided to utilise that route,to get to Germany.

Obviously,P&O are the carrier to Rotterdam, and the best price I've come up with so far for a car and 2 people,is £228 return, which isn't bad,but like everyone else,I like to hunt a bargain,I'm sure there's a better bargain to be had.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a better price?

Goodyear Excellence or Pirelli P6 both cheapish but average tyre life, or Michelin Primacy HP at a higher price for great tyre life and better fuel economy too. All 3 fairly quiet on new shape Galaxy / S-Max, should be ok on old shape Galaxy as well assuming they do the correct sizes and load ratings.

Hi all, just a quick question, does anyone have any information about the government's plans for taxation on LPG fuel next year? The last that I heard and the tax was fixed until 2009 but I've found no mention of what will happen after that date.

I would hope that at worst there would be a gradual increase to narrow the gap between LPG and petrol over a period of several years, but my gut tells me that this government can't be trusted and would probably make an abrupt change.

I'm still toying with having the Mondeo converted as I simply can't find any other vehicle to match it for power but with 40mpg economy without resorting to a newer common-rail diesel. (even the TDCi 130 ain't gonna be nicer to drive than the V6)

that's right , LPG is now 61.9 p a litre around here . The tank is a nominal 120 litres but actually takes 106 litres when totally empty , and that lasts around 220 miles in mixed suburban driving . We zero the trip meter on every fill .

Hi,

Recently accepted for a job in Birmingham and will be moving mid June. The job itself is based in Birmingham business park, just off the A452.

The places I'm considering to live are around Solihull, and driving from there takes me onto the A45 (Coventry rd) then onto the A452.

How is the morning rush hour traffic? I'll be setting off at 7:30am ish myself, and hopefully back by 4:30pm ish.

Are there any sites that let you retrospectively look for road congestion issues? The last thing I want is to rent a property to find I've put myself in the commute from hell!

Thanks in advance Read more

I'm considering living quite close to the Business Park and just cycling it in ideally, but as you say the area around there isnt the most desirable place to live. I'll need to visit the area before making any decisions, but it seems like a no go from what people have said so far.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback, I'll factor these all in.

Anyone used carhireexcess.com?

You can do short hires at a daily rate. Cover looks pretty standard and it saves having to buy an annual policy.

Muchas gracias.

Hi,
My friend owns a 1987 Mercedes 300SL. During startup (cold or warm) the car is difficult to start, then hunts for a few seconds before sorting itself out. The car also very harsh
during speeds of 40 - 50 miles an hour but if ran in sports mode it seems o.k.
Someone advised the head needs rebuilding due to blown gasket at £2000. I have checked for water from the exhaust and in the oil but there is no trace (although I haven't ruled it out) and added a component called K-seal just in case. Someone also advised the harshness at 40 mph is due to a wheel baring. I am considering checking the plugs, filter and wheel baring this weekend. Although I have some mechanical experience I do not know a lot about these cars. I think this model has a carburettor fitted. I was thinking it could be a choke problem? Any advise please?

Binding front brakes and/or warped discs? Failing front wheel bearing/s? Front wheels out of balance?

Jack up front of car and check if wheels rotate freely to see if brakes are binding. If so, check if the brake calipers are frozen by removing them and gently pumping the brake pedal (not to the floor) and check if the pistons move in and out on both sides.

Also check the brake pads for unneven wear, check the discs for warping by measuring the side-to-side run-out when the hubs are rotated. Also check the brake pads can slide in and out freely when the caliper is mounted to the hub, and is not gettting stuck due to corrosion of the pad and/or sliding contacting surfaces.

If wheels are running freely, grab opposite sides of the front wheels and try to rock them from side to side and top to bottom to check if the wheel bearings are worn.

Well done Westpig proper old-fashioned clip over the ear policing

Just remembered another example of that. Two of my wife's cousins, brothers, were once hauled in to Oxford central nick in an inebriated state. One was fairly stoical but the other was making a shrill drunken clamour. They are fairly used to that in that particular nick - I did it myself there once actually - so they are quite world-weary and irritable about it.

My wife's noisy cousin fell silent after a young copper had asked deadpan: 'Shall I beat him up now Sarge?'

LOWESTOFT is going alter the heavy-vehicle driver who goes too fast. Nine of them were hauled before the county Bench and fined £2 10s. each. The speeds ranged from 18 to 23 m.p.h., and they were checked over a distance of a mile by the speedometer on a motor-cycle and sidecar driven alongside the offending vehicle.

Did they really mean alongside? Makes you wonder what the truck driver was doing>

Funnily enough, I have been researching my family history in the USA by going through newspaper archives from early 1900's. A lot of the small town papers had columns describing motoring offences by local citizens. One of them (in 1910) was for a guy prosecuted for "1 armed driving" for which he was fined $2. Whether they meant he had only one arm, or was driving with one arm on the window ledge a la "Roman Holiday", they didn't say.

I am planing a car trip to the channel islands next month, to see some friends and soak up the sun, and am looking for advice on ferries.

So far as I can see, Condor Ferries have a monopoly on ferries from the UK to the Channel Islands, and their website offers me a return fare of £210. To be honest, that seems not too bad, because it's a lot less than I would have to pay for a shorter crossing on the Irish Sea (Holyhead to Dublin).

However, I seem to recall reading something on this site about ways of getting ferry bookings more cheaply, some website that offered discounts, or something. Does anyone know if there still anything like that, and whether it applies to the Channel Islands? Read more
