All suggestions accepted.

I'd like to get hold of a Mk1 Golf Cabrio which has been fully restored with an engine rebuild bringing it to almost 'as new' concours condition.

It's for my wife and I'd budget about 10k for such a car.

Having searched the net, decent cars don't seem to exist and the VW community seem to favour the standard GTi, the camper and the Beetle.

Where should I go to get one off the shelf ? Should I buy a nice non restored example and give it to a specialist to restore ? If so who ?

It's my view that if VW brought this car back as was it would sell. Read more

I'd search it thoroughly though !

According to www.europeancarweb.com/tech/0701_ec_flywheels/inde...l :

"Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF)
The OEM flywheel found in most modern manual transmissions (as well as semi-automatic transmissions like the Audi/VW DSG and BMW SMG) is classified as a dual-mass flywheel (DMF)."

hi there,

i bought an LPG converted Volvo v40 ('99) in Jan 2007. the dealer assured me the conversion was done properly but the very next day it went POP!

my girlfriend was so keen on the car we decided to just use it on petrol for a while until we could work out the problem, this was / is my first LPG car...

not long after we took it to an LPG specialist in Cardiff who seems / seemed like a genuine guy and i have no reason to dis trust him but in short we spent approx £500 having the front end of the conversion 're done'

it drove OK for a while until the 'backfires' from the air filter started again and on speaking to the mechanic he explained the original job was so badly done, that he'd have to re do the entire car to make it work properly.

NOT an option for a self employed musician!

2 replacement air filters / pipes later it still continues to backfire (FRONTfire?!) and conks out at low revs (always at the lights)...when on petrol it does not do this and drives OK.

i have no idea of how the gas system works and have an average knowledge of car mechanics....its like the gas 'pump' does not produce enough pressure......OR its not igniting correctly.

i'm getting very fed up of the continuing problem and have no / very little more money to throw at the car.

i can post pics or e mail to anyone who may be able to help!

many thanks in advance, si

I have been prompted to post on the basis of a fascinating description given by John S on how to repair the bracket that holds the engine top stay on an old style Mini, posted in technical.
His post was a form of literature that will soon be lost forever. He described a lengthy and complex repair involving relatively cheap parts that these days would not be done, the car would probably just be scrapped.
These thought come to me just now as I'm reading the biography of the late Fred Dibnah who preserved Victorian engineering for future generations. Who will preserve the motoring history of cars from the 50's onwards in the same way, if not us.
My own favourite memory is how the gearbox could be removed from inside the car on Triumph Heralds and Spitfires, allowing gearbox and clutch repairs. I recall one such repair on my Herald where the gearbox failure had been precipitated by the failure of a 4p circlip.
Once the box was out, with relative ease, it could be dismantled with no specialist tools. OK, the job took a few hours but was easy, fun and filled a boring Sunday for me.
Today, what would have happened? Recon box, scrap the car? Read more

I agree on reflection that great harm has been done by the deliberate, ostensibly health-related elimination of small, (relatively!) friendly local breakers' yards and the outfit like the one in Sussex that I used to pass that sold things like Unimogs, Bren gun carriers and once, memorably, with a price tag of £10,000 (or perhaps £20,000, a large round sum anyway) a wood-fired saddle-tank narrow-gauge steam loco, goodness how I wanted it, but the thought of the cost and labour of laying the track, as well as the problem of persuading my wife's family to have the thing in their woodland made me see sense... Just as well I didn't have the money though.

It is indeed the inconsistancy that annoys me. Had it flown off and given a driver head injuries ( for example ), everyone would say it should never have been allowed to happen but because it didnt and it was on a red car, its OK. Its not and for the sport to have any credibility, it needs uttermost consistancy which doesnt seem the case.

Wasnt it the Red Bull car that was investigated on the CHANCE that its suspension could break more than once? Whats the chances of Ferrari having to prove their exhaust system wont keep detaching? None because its Ferrari.

Hi
Just bought a Corsa 1.5 TD today
Car runs well 1996 43000 Miles took it for a Good test drive
no Problems their. brought it home decided as it was near the Red mark on the Gauge might as well fill it up. Due to the Price of Diesel and the thought that it might go up again..
I thought Fill it to the Brim. Great drove it home parked up went for a Cuppa.
Came back about 30 mins later and noticed a Pool of fluid under the offside rear,
Diesel. Black Gold. might be at the price I paid for it.
So jacked it up had a look seems to be coming from on Top of the Tank where the Fuel pipes come from. problem is I cant see much with Tank being to close to the floor of the Car.
Will try and have a better look tomorrow.
But was wondering if anyone had come across this on a Corsa of this age before.
Thanks
for any help

..UPDATE..
Had another crack at it Today
did not get around to taking the Seat out and seeing if I could find the Inspection hole
for the Fuel Filter Pipes etc.
I Syphoned around a Gallon of Diesel out.
and that appears to have stopped the leak.
Was in Halfords earlier had a Look at the Haynes manual seems one of the Pipes I was looking at was a Vent Pipe, so I'm wondering if being a really Hot day yesterday. Car when i bought it was on the red I brimm it to the top could this have caused the Pipe to push diesel out ?

I'm now actively shopping for a berlingo. Ebay has a few at reasonable prices, but when it comes to checking the car there are various reports available.
HPI
MyCarCheck
AutoCheck

are the ones I've come across. Can anyone give me a quick run down on the key differences - which is best? I'm only looking at spending 3-4 K but even so some sort of guarantee would be handy.

Also - what about short term insurance? There used to be someone offering it free when you buy a car on ebay - is that still the same?

thanks

I wondered the same Tom, given that several are near identical (any one of them I'd happily have bought) I wonder if he works for a main dealer and is trading on the side with the PXs.

There are some pretty good reasons here for not buying a diesel. tinyurl.com/6gqsmm Read more

Rubbish. My 2 litre petrol Focus accelerates just as fast as any of the Focus
diesel variants of a similar year ~ 2003

Apart from the fact there was no 2.0 diesel Focus in 2003, and I was talking about the accelerative grunt rather than the stopwatch times, I take your point.

I suspect comparing a current 2.0 TDCi and 2.0 petrol would be a lot different. Similar 0-60 times due to the diesel not being able to hold each gear for as long, but compare the 50-70, 60-80 times, and also the feel of the thing when you just want to accelerate *now*, instead of swapping gears. 320NM of torque vs 185NM.

The other downside of course is that driving your 2.0 petrol in a way that will see the petrol engine's ability to rev overcome the diesel's massive torque advantage will net you about 25 mpg. You have to mercilessly thrash a modern 2.0 diesel to get much less than 40 mpg, but the point is you just don't need to.

We have both turbo petrol and turbo diesel cars in our household, and frankly for A to B, cut and thrust, point and squirt use, the diesel gives very little away. On open roads, or when squirting down a motorway slip and holding on to the gears, the petrol makes a much better case for itself. The petrol sounds far nicer though.

Cheers
