Hi,

Is this anything to worry about?

Our Ford Focus 1800 TDCI Sport 06 plate with 13K on the clock has started revving by 250-600RPM if you dip the clutch in traffic. The revs will hold for a second or two and then drop back to normal. This is happening normally between 1000 - 2000 RPM and its in traffic jams when you notice it.

I have the car booked in to the dealers on Monday to get the passenger side Airbag switched off, so hHopefully be able to fix it at the same time.

Last time I seen a diesel rev, it couldnot be turned off and expired in a big way!

Thanks

Baz

Not sure whether this is relevant but my old 2002 1.8 TDDI Focus did this and it was the drive-by-wire throttle that was at fault. Sitting in traffic with an idle speed of 1200rpm was noisey on those old diesels!

Didn't do it all the time but was frequent enough for me to source another pedal for around £80 and a 10 minute installation.

I've found what looks like half the circlip that holds the CV to the drive shaft poking out of a hole in the gaiter.
I've pulled it out, and it doesn't seem to be throwing out any grease.
I changed the gaiters last year - one was just starting to go.
It's got me thinking, what is the point of this circlip, and does it matter that it's breaking up?
I suppose if the other half gets in the balls it'll lead to early failure, but complete removal of the circlip? The joint's firmly held in the hub. There could be a bit of sliding movement in the driveshaft splines, but would it matter? Read more

Had a miserable journey last night. I was in Milan and was due to fly back BA to Heathrow at 18.55. Seems that last night's storms were affecting most of Northern Europe. Boarded on time at approx 18.15 European time but then sat on the ground for over two hours. Very bumpy ride back followed by several tours of Essex in ever more tedious circles. Finally landed about 21.45 UK time to find that most other inbound flights had been similarly affected with the resultant chaos in the baggage hall. Got to the car at about 23.00 and began the journey home to Cheshire. Horrible driving conditions M40, M42, M6. Loads of spray, standing water and quite a few accidents, one of which looked very nasty unfortunately. Eventually crawled in after 2.00. Yuk !

Had a Pug 206 on hire in Italy this week. Not sure which engine it had but it was small and petrol. Quite eager and good sharp handling. Nasty gearchange though, very notchy. Interior trim was a bit low rent but comfy enough. On recent trips I have had a Fiesta, a Corsa and a really dinky little Lancia Ypsilon. The Pug was OK but somehow just didn't make me like it as much as these others. Of course navigating Milan's equivalent of the North Circular on a Friday afternoon was suitably adrenalin inspiring but somehow it sort of works if you just ensure that you don't actually hit anything with your front bumper. Otherwise you just have to go with the flow.

Anyone else get caught up in this? Read more

We travelled up to Wales yesterday afternoon, weather was wet and windy, however last night took the dogs round the block and it was calm and dry, same here today, just come back from a good run in some forestry and still dry if rather windy.

I have to keep keep changing frequency to get a decent signal. In my old Ford KA no such problems so I don't know if I'm just doing something wrong. Is there a trick? Read more

My sons have season tickets for the Rams, sometimes I go. It's terrible, they get beaten nearly every week, the players are hopeless.
Robbie Savage cost £1,500,000 and is on about £30,000 per week, he recently turned up for training in a new £150,000 Merc painted in black and white (motoring link). It didn't go down very well with some of the other players. He was dropped at the weekend for the Sunderland match (0-0).

When I used to go regularly we had wonderful players like Kevin Hector, Colin Todd and Roy MacFarland. We won the 1st division twice!

Up the Rams!!!!!

While driving to this morning I saw a 57 plate Citroen C4 SX (if I remember correctly) in front of me with the tyre fitted underneath the boot of the car. I've had this in my Peugeot 106 and I'm sure there are few more cars out there with the same sorts of fitting. I just would like to know doesn't it make life very hard to remove and re-fit the tyre when you've to replace the punctured tyre when you're out and about? I personally never had to remove or fit the tyre back in there but I'm pretty sure it'll require much more effort than taking the car out of the boot? Read more

I notice on another thread (Milton Keynes by 09.30) that the OP had time for a coffee in Wolverton Tescos, but no fry-up because the Tesco cafe is now a Starbucks.

Is this the way Tescos are going? For those of us with irregular work patterns, it is nice to know when out on the road (motoring link) that we can get a nice cheap cooked breakfast at Tescos.

I had an hour to kill this week near the Tescos on Cromwell Road near Earls Court. Having had an early start I was looking forward to lining my arteries with some cholesterol; when I found that the Tesco cafe is now one of those Costa Plenty places - so no fry-up, just a croissant and a cup of tea!

I do hope they are not going to convert all of their cafes to coffee places - perhaps it's just in the areas seen to be posh.

No problem in a caravan on the bike, prefer to sit down in a caff otherwise.

I need a set of car seat covers for my wifes new (to her) 2006 five door Polo 1.4tdi.
Please can anyone recommend a set - plain and simple machine wasahble would be good. Just to keep the kids food and drink off the seats. Read more

steve - make sure you do not fit aftermarket front seat covers to the 2 front seats if they have airbags built into the side of the seats.
To overcome this problem we bought a couple of seat back protectors for the front seats - they only cover the back and laid an old but colourful full size beach towel under the kids seats on the back - it did the job and as it was covered in their favourite disney princesses it brightened up an otherwise dull interior.
Just be careful about covering any seats that have airbags though.

Morning all. I suspect that the air mass meter on my Escort turbo diesel is not working. I have a running issue with the car, so after a bit of research I thought I'd disconnect the meter to see if the problems I'm having changed........it didn't. In fact nothing changed at all, does this mean the the meter is working or not? Read more

Sorry about that, I though that my other thread was deleted, just read it, and thanks for taking the time to get back to me.

Hi all

I need some advise before i take my car to the garage , id ask my hubby but he doesnt drive..and cycles everywhere!!

I have citeron xantia 97 p reg turbo diesel 1.9.( mother in law gave us 2 yrs ago )
Have a few problems, starting splutters and chugs and vibrates?? for about 2mins kicks out blue smoke then once started is ok.. unless i leave it ( overnight)

Also my cd player and clock have stopped working > could this be connected to the starting the car>? a fuse or something?? any idea where the fuse box is as i don't have a manul.
Also... i think my radiator has gone.. as temp gage is going to 110 for a small journey of say 15-20 mins. im filling the rad up and some i think is coming from the overflow and every day i have to top it up and use about 4 litres ( 2 big pop bottles full )

SO i know the poor thing is probarbly one its last legs( and i know it needs a good service not had one since last year) and also i was told i need to change the air filters as well which may help ?? but can not afford a 'new' car so going see whats wrong with it and see how much it would cost.

Any tips or advice would be great thanks.

This car certainly doesn't sound on top of the world, particularly regarding the coolant loss issue. Have a good look at the radiator first and if it's badly corroded near the bottom then its likely to be the rad that's at fault. Cost of replacement is between £150 and £200. Also check all hoses and connections. If all seems fine on this front and coolant is being lost via the expansion tank filler cap/overflow then yes head gasket failure seems more than probable. Take it to a garage and get it checked, possibly be means of a 'sniffer' test whcih would confirm HGF.

Regarding the starting/smoking issue, a HGF would cause poor starting and rough running, but usually results in white smoke as opposed to blue, as was the case when the head gasket in my 1994 306TD (same engine as your Xantia) gave up the ghost. Blue smoke sounds like the turbo oil seals and/or valve stem seals have failed which would result in the engine burning oil.

I was quoted between £500 and £700 for a replacement HG, so I decided to bite the bullet and fit a replacement engine from an accident damaged 306, the cost of which was £575 supply and fit.

The malfunctioning clock and CD player is probably nothing more than a blown fuse, but is the least of the car's problems!
