Saw on telly last night that one of the high street garage chains have just started an offer.
Apparently, if you buy your brakeshoes or pads from them, they will replace them in the future (even for the life of the car) free of charge! not sure if that includes the price for the parts or just the fitting of them.
Sounds too good to be true?

Let's be fair, these guys need to make a profit. So when you take your motor in for your free brake pads they will go over it with a fine tooth-comb to try to sell you other services. Fair enough. Also, they won't replace discs for free and these wear out almost as fast as pads these days. you can't really refuse when they recommend new discs with an astronomical price mark-up.
There's no such thing as a free lunch.

There are reports of an "incident" concerning sub-standard diesel supplies to Tesco stores in East Anglia.

Apparently; dozens of cars have broken down and Tesco are handing out claim forms.

Anyone affected and know the exact details? Read more

Sounds like classic PGM-FI Main Relay problems to me - sometimes the dry joint's making contact, sometimes it isn't. Resoldering guide here:

My brother is thinking of buying a van via an ad he found in a wellknown motoring mag. I'm a bit nervous about it but what do you guys think. This is paraphrased from the guys email that is selling it ...

First let me say that the car is available for 9200 GBP,the car is in perfect conditions ,no flaws or dents, no scratches or any kind of damage,no engine problems, no hidden defects, the car has not sustained any damage whatsoever. The interior is in like new condition and has never been smoked in. There is no outstanding finance on the car. The car is still UK registered, the problem is that at this moment I am located in Germany for the next 3 months because I've just started a new business here with an old friend of mine. Also I must let you know that the car is here with me but I will arrange to be shipped at your door without any problem. The car comes with original invoice, owners manual and all the documents to prove its ownership. You won't have to pay any import taxes because it's a UK car, not an import. You will get from me the keys and all documents to register the car onto your name. The delivery of the car takes max. 5 days depending on your location.I am a private seller not a dealer and I had (for the moment) the privilege to buy this car at a low cost from a bankrupt dealer and now this new business is forcing me to sell it fast and under the market value. The price you will have to pay in order to own this vehicle is 9200 GBP with shipping costs included!
I am not able to handle the sale in person and that's why I have arranged everything with the delivery of the car. I want to take this opportunity to assure you that this deal is 100% legitimate, the security part of this deal will be managed by World Pay,in this way both of us will be protected. They will safeguard the transaction from all and any angle. The sale will be thru Woeld Pay, meaning that they will hold and insure your money until receipt of the car in good condition. You will be given a 7 days inspection period before releasing the payment. The inspection period is starting from the day you will receive the vehicle. You will have the car for inspection and test drive BEFORE any money is released to me.
If you wish to purchase the car please provide me your full name and full address so I can initiate the deal through World Pay. I hope we can do business.

Thanks everyone. I was pretty certain it was a scam for all the reasons that have been pointed out and thankfully my brother is enlightened. Just reassuring to hear it from others. Cheers.

let me tell you a story !!!

Day 1 AM Driving to work - temp outside below freezing - interior fans blowing cold

get stuck in traffic - temp gauge overheats - try to drive back home - have to keep stopping - call mechanic - hour later mechanic arrives - all seems OK !!!!

mechanic reckons thermostat was sticking due to cold

Day 1 PM Driving home - temp gauge takes a while to get up to normal op temp. - stop for a bag of chips - start up - guess what - interior fans now not working - get home

Day 2 AM start to drive to work - cold outside again - no interior fans working - get stuck in traffic - temp gauge overheats - manage to get home

not driven since for any long distance - however temp gauge does take longer than normal to reach op temp

Please does anyone have any ideas

Full service history, pref with Subaru dealer and as its the base model, check for off-roading damage - they dont take them down the side of mountains but it may well have been across a field or down a bumpy track. Other than that it should be pretty well bullet-proof, Im actually quite jelous!

Is this a EOBD or a OBD11 as I would like to buy a code reader for it ?

No need to shout ! Read more

Just possibly EOBD, but it's a bit early - OBD-II was never used in the UK.

It could still be a manufacturer's protocol.

My dad owned the village garage once upon a time so I guess I got off to a flying start with servicing and bodgeing. I have an early memory of him fitting a gas-flowed head and stiffer valve springs to his Mk2 Ford Zephyr drophead. Popular Mechanics and Practical Motorist helped me and when I finally lost it completely and bought my first hydraulic Citroen, the Citroen Car Club mag was invaluable next to the Haynes manual. Citroen Car Club meetings would have a resident expert who would dispense wise words if you could get near him.

For those of you that like or liked getting your hands dirty, which book(s) or magazine(s) have helped you most in your lifetime of oily skinned knuckles, crucial lost widgets and foul language? Or did parents, uncles or friends help you on your way?

I ask because one of my son's mates has had an old Mini bought for him and he wants to wire in an array of spotlights. Without too much bother, I have rootled out a paperback copy of an undated Mini manual 1959 on by J H Haynes with foreword by the legendary Paddy Hopkirk, and a copy of AA Car Care from 1992 with some splendidly simple diagrams in it. The modern spannerman doesn't like to read much however, and said mate went white when I showed him my recommendations for reading. He said, "You'll help me out if I get stuck, won't you?" Remembering my 30-year-old vow never to touch a Mini with any sort of tool again, I kept quiet.

Your turn ...

Vancouver Island 1972
We were 3 engineering students working as summer labourers at the local pulp mill and renting a place together on Vancouver Island. One of the guys had recently bought an Austin Healy 3000 with a crunching gearbox. The 3 of us had started to take it out one week (it could be removed from inside the car) when the weekend arrived and the owner popped off back to the mainland for the weekend. He optimistically said that that we could use it if we got it back together with the new syncho rings. Needless to say, the two of us worked very very hard getting the tranny out, fixed and back in by late Saturday afternoon leaving us Saturday night and all day Sunday to enjoy some spirited motoring in one of the coolest cars around.
We had to be careful on the speed bumps down at the lake as I recall.

Andrea

Could anyone help-
The problem I am having with my car is that it seems to be burning the heater plugs out , we fitted a new set approx 6 months ago and now when starting when cold has a misfire . We have noticed that a black plastic type deposit is building up around the heater plug where it screws into the cylinder head which makes removing the heater plugs extremely difficult.

Apologies to all who replied to my earlier message , I realised that I had left off the year of manufacture and engine size and tried to edit the message but was unable to .Unfortunately we do not know the make of the glo-plugs.
Kind regards Andrea

Hi

Hope someone can help. Ive got a 1.3 1999 fiesta and the fan for the heater started to make a strange whirring noise followed by a clunking/rubbing noise which got progressively slower until it stopped completely. It would then start up working again but still making the same noises and eventually stopped working altogether. I still get heat into the car once its been running for about 15mins but as you can imagine in the cold weather its causing a real problem keeping the screen clear.

Can this be repaired easily by an amateur?

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Nick

Get a copy of the haynes manual it will show you how to remove the heater motor, you may be lucky the fan as dropped off, but cheap to replace.. good luck.
