hi i have a 306 1.9 td on at plate (about 99/00) and while away on holiday i lent it to my sister and upon coming back she tells me the wheels make a squeeking sound this is heard most when a lot of weight is being carried or when going over speed humps, it seems to be a high pitched squeek coming from the wheels but occasionally there is a deeper squeek as well, any help would be appreciated. the car has done about 105k. thank you for any suggestions Read more
Might be one of the rear radius bearings has collapsed, and the tyre is rubbing on the inner wing. Check by looking from the back of the car that one (or both!) of the wheels is not leaning in at the top, and have a look under the rear arches to see if the tyres have rubbed a section of the inner wing clean. If it's that far gone it will need a replacement subframe. Or just replacement!

Further to my dilemma about what estate car to get, it occured to me that the Espace fits the bill quite well in terms of space and seems quite economical.
My question is has anyone here owned one of these and what are they like for reliability, parts costs and to drive? Im only interested in the MK1 Espace ( 1985-90 ) as this falls into my budget.
My family have suggested that I get a 7-seater MPV now as an estate doesnt quite have a loadspace as practical as an MPV.
Im also still looking at the Mitsubishi Space Wagon and also the Toyota Space Cruiser ( a friend of mine had one of these so I know about these ) and the Nissan Prairie. Read more
Well ive given up on the economy idea and settled for around a 35mpg minimum.
I dont need a car that can carry the adults AND the scooter, just one that can easily do both.
So far, within that criteria, the Toyota SpaceCruiser is the only one that comes close, the only 'but' with them is finding one that isnt on its last legs. It has the space and reading owners reports and those of people I know who owned them, they are stupifyingly reliable, even when old and fairly comfortable, if not fast.
It is possible to find cars that have been looked after for most of their lives. I have managed to buy 15 old cars in the last 8 years which had complete service records, some of them from main dealers, all for under £1000, so I know its possible to find such cars.
My Mazda has 20 years worth of service history and it cost me 150 quid, so anyone who tells me that ALL old cars are knackered, have poor service records and on their last legs clearly doesnt know much about the old car market because mine runs very sweetly and has a record of every lightbulb and washer ever changed along with atleast 10 years of main dealer history and another 10 years of local garage servicing, with invoices for the lot. Its not the first one Ive foudn liek thsi either.
When I buy a car, I look upon it as a long term project, so I go through the entire car and replace anything that needs replacing. I dont spend only up to the cars value for a very good reason - I have bought used cars for £2-4000 and had just as bigger bills for them than I have for £500 cars, so even if a car needs £1000 worth of work done, its still cheaper than a £4000 car with just as many potential problems.
Big bills on old cars are usually avoidable if you check a car throughly - making sure the body is good, engine and gearbox plus anything the car is known for having issues with and this is all ive had to do to get a good car so far.
Does anyone know if there's a way to get the valve timing right first time on this engine? It's had a snapped cambelt, and i know about the procedure for timing this engine up, the problem is that it relys on setting the valve timing on all 4 pistons being level, this seems bizarre to me since all 4 pistons will be level 4 times during the 4 strokes of the engine, knowing that the system relys on a crank position sensor i have to find the right one, now i'm guessing that it'll be when the missing tooth is coming round ready to fire on the CPS pick up as piston number one is on its way up on the compression stroke.. Anyone know any better? Just replaced 16 bent valves.. don't really want this to go wrong! Read more
You need a special tool to set it up. See www.shop4parts.co.uk/index.cfm/method/catalogue.li.../. Haynes gives the dimensions if you want to make your own, although you will need a lathe.

Hey since the first time i´ve seen the idea i´ve been instantly attracted by its looks......but is it really a reliant car??? Are here any idea owners/drivers who can tell me their honest impressions and advises?? I don´t want to be a permanent user of the fiat´s mechanics shop...... so please HEEELP!!! Read more
My father had one from about June of last year to April of this year (at which point he traded it for a Grande Punto). It was a 1.4 Eleganza (petrol engine). Nicely put together, comfortable and very well specified, but felt underpowered. I once drove it with 3 passengers from Gloucestershire to home (including the slog up Birdlip hill on the A417).
My overriding impression was that the throttle response was excellent and that the 1.4 was a nicely refined, free-revving little engine, but simply not big enough for the job. To make decent progress required regular trips to 5,000 rpm and below 3,000 it struggled. This meant that I couldn't achieve better than 37 mpg over the trip, which didn't impress.
Depreciation is a problem - when my father traded his in, per Glass's it had lost about £6.5k in the 10 months since purchase. My recommendation to anyone looking to buy one would be to look for one about 9 months old, and with the diesel engine, although they don't appear to do the Eleganza trim with that engine.
I think Fiat would sell considerably more of these if they offered a better choice of engines - say a 1.6 or 1.8 petrol and a 1.9 diesel, or even the 90 bhp version of the 1.3 diesel. The Meriva, which I would consider to be the Idea's most obvious competitior, gives (ignoring the VXR) the choice of 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 petrols, and 1.3 and 1.7 diesels, and it's therefore not hard to see why it sells better.
My mother's physical mobility can deteriorated rapidly in the last few months, and it seems that the possibility of my father taking my Forester back to make life easier for my mother is unlikely to happen.
The step is likely to be my mother in a wheelchair for all outside journey's - even ones around the corner - and to see her attempt to get into a Suzuki Wagon R+ last night (which is extremely easy to access) was pitiful. So, if she gets a wheelchair, we need a car that my father can drive, and get her into the car easily, without removing her from the chair.
I have seen the adverts for Brotherwood conversions of vans. Are they any good? Are there alternatives, both in terms of other conversion companies, or different types of vehicle, as my father has always enjoyed driving interesting cars, and I can see him taking to a van easily. Also, he would want an automatic gearbox. Is if only Renault that do an automatic van (Kangoo)?
Alternatively, are there any 'gadgets' that enable a person to sit down facing outwards and then swing around into the car?
Thanks Read more
It's not often you can say "these people know it all" but The Disabled Living Foundation really do. It's a charity with a huge demonstration unit on the Harrow Rd. north London.

Has anybody else had problems downloading from the Tom Tom site? I thought it was just me until I spoke to a couple of colleages who like me have bought, attempted to download & failed.
if anybody has any advice on what I'm doing wrong I would appreciate it as it's not alowing me to fully utilise an otherwise excellent product. Read more
Many thanks for the advice
I have seen loads of vw's made to look like herbie, but is it legal to have large rally type numbers on a road car? Read more
Surley you would have to change the log book as to its colour, every mortal change from standard has to be listed in German log books.
I've just bought a Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec 2001 (51) reg.
Besides getting up to speed and slamming the brakes on is there a simple way to determine if it has ABS or not.
Also on the pricing guide there are two verions for this reg a 1.6 zetec and a 1.6 (revised 2001) zetec. What is 'revised' and how do I determine if mine is revised version or not. Also in the price guide there are version numbers such as 02A, 02B and 03. How do i determine what mine is?
Thanks for all help.

It's virtually impossible to get the ABS to work on a dry road othen than in a complete emergency-as said earlier "wet grass".
Can anyone tell me when the cambelt should be changed mine is 2001 model just done 53000 not been changed yet ,I was told it was 60000 but I have read on another forum they were changing them after 40000. Read more
This should be changed now, as I understand from Audi (I have an A4 with the same engine) that it is 60,000 miles or 4 years whichever is sooner.
It is not just about mileage, age must be taken into consideration also.
Er, no. There is a well known fault with Ford TDCi engines and their EGR valves that causes them to be mobille smog machines. Your dealer should be able to sort easily.
