Hi all,
I have a 2004 Daihatsu Charade 1.0SL, 20K miles. In first gear especially, there is very noticeable transmission wine (almost like the amount you would get in reverse). It is not as bad in second, and not noticeable in 3rd or above. Is this a normal characteristic of a small engined 3 cylinder car, or is it the sign of a faulty 'box? The car will be serviced soon, so I think I will raise it with the dealership as the warranty runs out in March. Very occasionally 1st gear is difficult to select.
Also, when pulling out to the right, a clicking/ scarping noise can be heard. This happened before and a driveshaft was replaced under warranty. I have since taken it back and they assure me the driveshafts are fine. Any ideas?
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Many thanks for all those comments on dirty diesel oil. I have another query. I have a Ford Mondeo Estate 2.0 TDCi (Oct 2003) fitted with Sony 6CD audio unit. The radio reception (Radio 4, ClassicFM) has been consistently poor whilst I have had the car (from 1 year old). Much complaining obtained a new unit which was slightly better but not much. Further complaining produced a new aerial to little effect. Contacts have been cleaned (they said) and adjustments made and it is still hopeless. This problem is apparent both locally (Salisbury) and nationally. The unit is correctly setup. The CD side of things is OK and all works well. The warranty runs out in a couple of weeks and I have run out of ideas. The Ford dealer simply reports no fault found which is clearly rubbish. Help? Read more
Have you allowed the set to roam for the best signal, where
I stay in the UK I can get R4 on four
frequencies and on a 15 mile trip it switches between three
but always perfect recection ,I have the same Sony unit.

Was wondering the answer to this question after we have just got a MINI Cooper.
Within days of getting a cherished MINI we have access to on-line database with 'mini driving routes' across the UK among other things, 5 years further free servicing etc and so far a great dealer relationship.
It seems that buying second hand still doesnt water down the MINI ownership and it seems every care and attention has been considered to keep the MINI brand one of the best.
Although I believe that MINI could have gone a long way to save MG Rover if BMW had not kept it, I personally dont think the name and values would have been as highly regarded and certainly used values would have been a lot weaker.
Would be interested in whether you agree or disagree?

Be much easier to have an edit/modify button so that you can change errors etc..
But there were no errors to change.
I am looking for, but unable to find, a law prohibiting learner car drivers carrying passengers.
Bikes - no pillion for learners understood.
Apart from the supervising full driver I can find no mention of passenger carrying for provisional car drivers.
The reason I ask is that a dissagreement in the pub has got me looking.
Thanks for any help Read more

I hadn't realised the rules had changed - I must keep up to date.
Hi
I have just taken a job working for my dad's firm. Within this he has said he will meet the cost of a vehicle somehow - but it all seems really vague!
Now having worked and had company car's in the past, I have paid this off my tax bill per month and any business miles i do I reimburse using the company fuel card.
Basically, being a family firm...he has suggested if I buy a car he will pay me a set amount per month to cover loan repayment or a mileage limit - so i can avoid paying tax.
The problem is...i dont know what is reasonable per month to ask for and the figure of 35p a mile has been aired by him.
now on my calculations if i were to buy a used car for around £15,000 that did say 25mpg average...
this would cost me:
over 60 months on about 8% APR - £300 a month
Mileage - say i did 50 a day - thats 250 a week - so 1000 a month at 35p a mile = £350 - approx cost of £5 a gallon (25mpg) = £200
giving me £150 a month potential profit off fuel for running costs
My question is - what is the norm with car tax? if he gives me this allowance for a loan, would he pay tax on that? is it also normal to pay a fee per mile i cover for the business on top of this?
My other reluctance is to buy a car personally and take a loan out as I am looking to buy a house shortly - in our circumstances, are there any benefits for my dad buying the car through the business? or is leasing a good option?
Any advice would be really appreciated as I am totally baffled! - I also want to work the best package out for me, but at the same time not rip him off....a fair compromise is whats needed!
Thanks for your help in advance!

second that.
any suggestions on a decent company that rents mustangs for pick up in los angeles airport? would be needing it for 2 weeks
or possibly any other cool american car thats not overly expensive i.e no hummers or vipers etc Read more
the other thing is, if you're renting from the really big places..........they have shed loads of cars parked in different areas depending on their grading....(e.g. group c in one zone, next zone up is group d, etc)...
you don't get given the specific car details in the office, just the grouping and what zone to go to, where someone will check your paperwork and direct you to one of the cars parked in that zone. You then get checked at a booth at the car park exit.
If you're not in a particular hurry, hang around a bit and wait until the zone you've paid for is empty (if that looks likely) as they'll have drivers constantly filling them up & sometimes they temporarily run out.
If this is so, you automatically get directed to the next zone up, the attendant will sign your paperwork and hey presto an upgrade, for nowt.
I have an 06 reg Clio fitted with xenon lights. I need to change a parking light bulb but can't see how to do it. The manual mentions removal of some parts but I can't see which. Don't want to spend pounds at the Renault dealer for a 60p bulb!
Does anybody know where the cabin filter is on these models ?

My wife's Corsa has just passed the MOT & I note the emissions print out shows under the fast idle test CO is 0% "%vol" & HC is 0 "ppm". Is a nil reading possible? Admittedly the 2005 read out showed only small amounts - same garage. The only difference is the engine has been run on Shell Optimax & now V Power for nearly 12 months. Read more
Although the engine runs perfectly sweetly it was still a surprise when my wife's 1995 306 Sedan XU7 1.8 also had zero readings at the last test.
While I was parked (legally) at LHR some low life made a half-hearted effort to break into my car. It is a 307 with remote locking and no alarm. The remote still works but the lock barrel has been pushed into the door a bit and is also not 'square' with the outer panel ie pushed in crooked. The key goes in and turns but does not function in terms of locking and unlocking the car. Questions
1. Might it be a cheapish fix to straighten up the barrell and reconnect some wiring?
or
2. Might it be a replace the doorlock barrel and maybe even the ignition lock/switch as well ie costly?
Please offer your opinions! I was lucky, they didn't get in and there is no panel or paint damage of any sort. Thanks Read more
Update. Picked up the car late on Wednesday evening; the key being used in the door lock now locks the car but does not fold the mirrors, which it should. The mirrors cannot be folded or adjusted from inside the car, neither of the front windows work at all, the rear windows work OK but cannot be isolated = kid proofed by using the switch on the leccy window panel. Went in with one fault and came out came out with 4 - is this progress I have to ask? Bill is in the post and I haven't received it yet - good!
Heh.
Have to say that both my cars have whiney second gears, especially on the overrun, although when I point it out to others they say "what whine?", so maybe it's just me.
As long as the whine doesn't get any worse over time I think it's nothing to worry about. It's only a function of the way the individual teeth mesh together anyway, and I reckon that a lot of the reason why gearbox whine is more noticable on early 90s Jap cars is that the engines are much quieter than the Euro competition and so less soundproofing was put in the smaller cars to save money. As all gearboxes whine to some degree (by definition) this lack of soundproofing means you hear more of it.
To prove this, listen to cars from outside as they slow down. Plenty of Fords, Pugs etc make a whiney noise on overrun but you don't hear this noise from the inside. Conversely, every Daihatsu I've been in (3 of them) have sounded whiney inside, but you can't really notice the noise from the outside.
