be shrewd on this......... i hired a mustang in Houston, Texas for a couple of weeks in 2001..... and the thing was awful. It was a 6 cyl version, but was as flat as anything, no doubt strangled by the US emissions bits and bobs. Was well disappointed.
I thought i was getting a 'sports car', but in reality, the automatic Rover 600 i drove to the airport in Blighty would have seen it off.
Make sure it's the big one or not at all.

all the rental sites i find say hyundai xxx or similar.....i dont want to pay £££££ to get there and have a hyundai (no offence hyundai drivers lol)
|
The Americans seem to have a remarkable ability to put up with truly awful cars......... like you, on a previous trip, i turned my nose up at a Nissan, thinking i'm not coming over here without driving a 'yank tank' but what i got was pretty bad.....
i know what you're trying to achieve and commend it......... just be aware you might not achieve it, then you won't be disappointed.

Have you trtied contacting the rental agencies in LAX direct and asking them the question. It'll cost you a few quid, but if it's important to you, it'll be worth it.
MTC
p.s. better still email will cost you nowt !

It is THE only way to find out. I would phone more than once and speak to different agents to be happy.
I have just done this with a simple hire as last time I was stuck with "this is what we do now sir"
This is from one of the biggest hire cos.
I want an auto so the choice short of a MB is a choice from two.
Last time. I wanted / booked a Camry. Got a Scenic.
I have just been phoning the arrival airport local office to check on the real situation.
Web says Corolla. They stock mosty Almeras but it might be a Corolla
Web says Camry. They are stocking Camrys again but it might be a FOCUS. (in the same class!!!)
If you want something specific you must phone them and find out the procedure to ensure NO substitutions.

The Americans seem to have a remarkable ability to put up with truly awful cars.....
You can say that again wp. I once hired a midrange Dodge, can't remember the model name, 2 doors and 6 cylinders. It had air conditioning. Apart from that it was total rubbish. It was slow, extremely thirsty and with the worst steering of any car I can remember, put me off power steering for years. It was so vague that you couldn't drive the damn thing in a straight line, it just wandered this way and that. Not dangerous, but really horrible.
That was in 1973 and the car was new. A few days later I bought (for $300) a 1964 Plymouth that didn't have power steering or a/c, but did have the same engine or one very similar. That car was far, far better, not a muscle car but went all right, really remarkably economical if driven gently and steered properly despite 4 and a half turns lock to lock and a gimmicky oval steering wheel. I imagine most Americans would have preferred the Dodge though.

Hertz will rent you a Shelby Mustang GT-H,H for Hertz, special edition for $500 a week, sounds like affordable fun to me.I have had some great laughs driving in California, always in a convertible and always with the roof down.
I wish i was going that Shelby sounds like fun.
|
carbookers sounds okay .....but is there anyway to find out what company they use?
|
Friends did a trip, in a Mustang convertible, from wherever the snow covered mountains are, down to Death Valley?? & Las Vegas, a month or 2 back.
Thought it an excellent drive - 'till he dropped her off on the Vegas strip, prior to parking & she was 'patted down' by the local constabulary, 'cos she looked like a lady of the night - so they thought!!
I'll make enquiries as to cost - of the car, not her!!

When checking American sites for rentals (as opposed to English versions of American sites) , don't forget that they assume you have US car insurance. You will need to add on all the CDW, SLI etc which don't come cheap.
I'm considering a Chrysler 300C for the March Florida trip. It's be quite something to roll up at the camping in...

Asked for (and got) a Mustang soft top from Hertz in San Francisco in April. Mind you, when I arrived, the car park was amazing, and seemed to have a wide variety available. I THINK I rented from the Hertz American site rather than the Hertz English, and a) they gave much more choice, and b) they seemed to be a little happier about you requesting a specific model. The problem is, I guess, people extending rentals, but providing it's not a major US holiday, and you're going in to a big airport, you should be OK. I guess if you ask for the Shelby Mustang, and pay for it, they'll have to find you one... but read the small print carefully. Might be worth your while joining the Hertz No 1 club... they don't charge you for it...

Came back from LA a couple of weeks ago and rented via Hertz. Having lived there in the 1990s I have a complete dislike of American cars and Hertz were the only firm to guarantee a European car. Ended up with an Audi A6 3.2 quatto which was very nice and soaked up the 2500 miles I did in 3 weeks. The credit card is still feeling sore though. However when I dropped the car back at LAX Hertz had probably 20 Shelby Cobra?s sitting in the compound ready to rent !!
I had a V6 Mustang as a rental back at the end of the 90?s and it was utter rubbish. Soggy handling, shocking interior trim and weak performance.
As an aside I paid extra and had the Hertz neverlost satnav in the Audi. It was great despite knowing California well. The directions were spot on and it was linked to an up to date yellow pages which allowed you to ?Find my nearest?? perfect for finding the local Starbucks in an unknown town :-)

As a regular renter in the USA, if you don't have a need for a particular sized car, my tip is to always book the cheapest, smallest one you can. On arrival, there is always an effort by the staff to sell an upgrade. Politely refuse all offers and you'll find that you will get an upgrade anyhow as they keep very few basic cars in stock.
On a ski trip to Vancouver, I needed a large 4x4 and booked the biggest thing they had. Even then, the guy tried to upgrade me. "To what?" I asked as the 6 litre monster was the biggest thing on their books in any case.
|
the other thing is, if you're renting from the really big places..........they have shed loads of cars parked in different areas depending on their grading....(e.g. group c in one zone, next zone up is group d, etc)...
you don't get given the specific car details in the office, just the grouping and what zone to go to, where someone will check your paperwork and direct you to one of the cars parked in that zone. You then get checked at a booth at the car park exit.
If you're not in a particular hurry, hang around a bit and wait until the zone you've paid for is empty (if that looks likely) as they'll have drivers constantly filling them up & sometimes they temporarily run out.
If this is so, you automatically get directed to the next zone up, the attendant will sign your paperwork and hey presto an upgrade, for nowt.
