i was just looking around ebay and i picked up on a load of "fuel savers". there is loads of different kinds on there from plastic things to a guy who you give a couple of quid and he will tell you that something you can buy out of your supermarket that saves fuel. do these things really really work ? i thought having pumped up tyres nd not raging your car round all the time was the best way Read more
It's coming to 60,000 and therefore timing belt time. I've fallen out with main dealers and found a reasonable independent close by (done a good job so far). Question is do most people trust cambelts to independents? Also I'm told by a friend that this may be a "difficult" cambelt and could need the VW computer to reset timing afterwards (he only trusts main dealers with his cars!). Has anyone done one/had one done and know whether or not it is out of the ordinary? I hope to use the local guy - not asked him yet thought I'd ask here first.
All help appreciated. Read more
Had it done today. Chose local independent - seems to have done a good job. Says was a bit of a pain, something about an engine mounting in the way but no real bother.
Total cost £340, including 60, 000 mile service. I'm fairly happy at that - that was belt and tensioners changed. Mentioned water pump, they felt that next time would be reasonable for pump so left it at that, rightly or wrongly. I wouldn't have minded if they'd been keen to change it, got the impression they felt it was overkill. I'll post again if it goes before next cambelt change! Price breakdown was TB kit £114 and labour for belt £104 (ex vat of course).
Got a L Reg Nissan with 100,000 on clock - very reliable in summer, but in the winter it will not start on cold damp mornings - putting a blanket on the engine the night before solves the problem, but sometimes I forget and then it won't start !!!!! - anyone got any ideas of what it can be - wondered if it could be the coolant temp sensor - has anyone had similar problems with their old micra - love my little micra - apart from this, it is a great little car. p. 139, footnote 109
"Unlike petrol, which evaporates very quickly, diesel oil is persistent in its liquid form. When it is spilled on the filling-station forecourt, it remains where it falls, spreading in puddles which soil the shoe-soles of all who pass by and notably making slippery the soles of the driver when he gets back in his car and addresses the pedals. When it is spilled on the road, it remains there for ages, and when it eventually sinks into the pores of the tarmac it will be floated up to the surface again by the next rainfall. So long as it persists, it is the most dangerous skid-inducer of modern times, having in particular killed a multitude of motorcyclists and maimed many more. Spilt diesel is indeed the most criminal of noisome emissions, but not the only one for which the engine can be blamed: there is much evidence that its exhaust fumes are strongly carcinogenic, but because early emissions legislation was aimed only as such exhaust ingredients as aggravated smog, this accusation was largely ignored. Efforts to revive it [emissions legislation, presumably] have been actively resisted not only by the engine manufacturers but also by the transport industry whose heavy goods vehicles rely on diesel to the exclusion of all else." I'm not one of those you think are prejudiced surely?
I just think GM made cars and those of their subsidiary cars are badly designed and bulit , All French cars are unreliable, and VAG means Very Ancient Garbage.
Apart from that I'm as impartial as Gordon Brown is charismatic.

hi, '94 306td just had head rebuilt and replaced after seized tensioner.
could anyone tell me if there is a bleed nipple on the bosch fuel pump for removing air from the system? i know there is on a lucas pump, but not sure with the bosch.
basically it is taking a long time to turn over and fire which i know is air in the system as you can see it in the clear pipes. i have cracked off the injectors and turned it over for awhile which has helped improve things but thee's still air there

If you have recently disturbed an old XUD engine, check the injector leakoff rubber pipes - they go hard, crack and leak. This problem would give the continuous air ingress you describe. New pipe from GSF.
659.
Change the blanking cap on No 4 injector leakoff also.

"In fact the catalytic converter performed no atmospheric miracles: no processes took place in it that could not and eventually would not occur naturally in free air. All the catalysis did was to accelerate the processes of nature, but by preventing the concentrations of contaminants that nature would deal with rather more slowly, it offered prompt treatment at a price that those who would profit reckoned people would pay. That is why all our cars have to be corrupted by catalysts today, including Hondas -- despite which Honda engines are still the world's cleanest, as well as the world's liveliest." Read more
Scott1s. When did you meet my ex-wife?
Had a loan 180k miles C250 diesel the other day, and apart from the non existent accelleration quite liked the solid feel of it. Just seen this car, would I be mad? Its at the top of my budget but comes with a new mot - private sale - and the brake pipes mentioned in the car by car breakdown have just been done and its got the indicators in the mirrors which I think is the facelift. He wants £8300. I dont have any experience of big Mercs and any comments appreciated.

You might find it possible to then upgrade when you arrive to the specific car if they have the Mustang. And if not stick with the standard one.
When I was hiring on Maui a few years back, and I went for a bog standard sized car. Didn't want to get a convertible. They didn't have my class of car and tried to get me to upgrade to the convertible. I ended up with a monster sized saloon (bigger than say a Scorpio) and didn't need more than 2 seats.

Just a shame it's not the world's first production diesel supercar.
Then it would have been something out of the ordinary.

In the e bay feedback some fool said he put the stuff, whatever it is, into his fuel tank AND his sump. What a plonker!
I put some in gas tank and oil and it started to run better right away.
