My Laguna 1.9DCi has started misbehaving! My 'glow-plug' indicator iluminated yesterday and I lost power, the engine continued to idle, but I lost the ability to accelerate. On switching off and on again the engine self revved to 5000 and then returned to 1000 of its own volition. I have been able to drive the car today but randomly the glow-plug indicator illuminates and I lose power. I am sure that this is an EMU fault - has anyone experienced a similar problem? Is this a common problem? Trying to avoid a £60 diagnostic charge and an additional £60 supply and fit charge.

Cheers for your help.

I am thinking of getting a 530d, I don't know too much about cars so a friend asked me to use an RAC inspection, they want £200ish,
Is it better do you think, for me to pay an indy specialist 2hrs of labour to check the car out? Read more

You're right of course, I ran away with myself there.

My ?92 (Mk3 petrol) Golf 1.4 CL has done 118k miles. It recently failed on a journey with horrible misfiring, unable to idle, frantic switching of the fuel pump relay. VW dealer found and corrected a short in the wiring loom, which allowed the car to idle but it was still nowhere near driveable - basically no power at anything below 3000rpm. Quoted £700 to replace the fuel injection (throttle body etc), but with reservation that there might be other components at fault, which would cost extra to diagnose and fix. They hinted that the wiring fault might have caused damage to the throttle valve potentiometer (which is integral with the throttle body).

Their quote is way outside my budget, so I?m back to DIY - I have bought and installed a secondhand throttle body/injector and the car now runs nearly perfectly. It starts first time, idles at normal speed, and can be driven. The remaining problem is that it loses power when I open the throttle quickly from idling ? if I open the throttle more slowly, it will behave. When driving, I can?t open the throttle too much when revs are low, or the car will impersonate a kangaroo. Basically it?s driveable only if I slip the clutch a lot and keep the revs right up.

I have subsequently checked the fuel pressure regulator ? clean and no visible damage to the rubber membrane. The injector itself has the correct electrical resistance as per Haynes manual.

What else can I look at? Haynes doesn?t show me where to find the ECU ? where do I look (under the bonnet?), and do the symptoms suggest it might be faulty? What about the fuel pump itself ? I was wondering if the repeated switching of the fuel pump relay might have damaged it?

Haynes also says this car?s fuel / ignition system can only be investigated by a garage with a diagnostic system, yet my local VW dealer was quoting £300 of labour to replace the throttle body and investigate the problem. Hardly sounds like the diagnostic process is time-efficient, that?s 4 hours?

The engine type is ABD and the fuel injection is Bosch mono-motronic. Recent repairs have been new HT leads and new plugs, and a new oil pump.

All suggestions welcome

Thanks

Robert

Does anyone know if Test Drive magazine has been pulled from publication?

I liked the format and down to earth road test articles but I haven't seen the magazine in the shops for a couple of months now and a Google search doesn't give me any info. Nor does Dennis Publishing website. Read more

Who are CAR funded by then?

Gucci?

Prada?

Ozwald Boateng?

It's not a car manufacturer I am sure. Waste of words and staples.

Rite i have a little problem and im wonderering if any one reading this that may be able to help or give a little of advice what the problem could be if possible please.
I brought a 1998 S-reg Megane 2.0i 16v Cabriolet a couple of weeks back ( Its the version that has the same engine as the Clio Williams Apparently ) the temp gauge rises rapidly to half way or just a little over half way but im not losing any water or oil as i check constantly but temp only rises when i have the heaters on to the 2nd temp bar, also the revs keep sticking between 1500RPm and 2500RPM it varies so cant give a percise RPM,. sorry. The RPM sticks probally 90% of time when the temp gauge shoots up without the heaters on and sometimes when they are on, but the revs stick mostly when either,
1. i have a habit of approaching red lights and as im stopping i just go into neautral instead of going down the gears.
2. When i do go down the gears when approaching to stop
3.Temp getting warm
4. Just as pressing clutch to change down
5. When they rise instead of being 1000 approx RPM if i just touch the peddle with a little rev they unstick and return to what they should be at 1000rpm.

I have had it serviced and still no change, fitted a k & N still no change, new thermostat and still no change. Changing oil and filter tomorrow iv even flushed the engine out with proper engine flush and make it was the MPG has gone to 28.3 miles per gallon because of this RPM problem ehen they rise and stick and cant get it on a diagnostic till weds next week.
Any ideas etc please email me at asgreaves@hotmail.co.uk

Cheers

Go via the Autobahn if you want to achieve higher speeds, but remember that it's much harder work compared to cruising on the empty péage at 80mph... which is an indicated 90mph and plenty fast enough.

Cool!

Can mature students enter too? SWMBO has just started at Leicester Uni. How far do you think we'll get in her Almera?

Whatever you decide to put your money on, have a great time and remember to report back afterwards.

Hi,

Hope some can help with this - i am a complete novice with cars.

i just had my MOT done and had some repairs done (BMW 316 1994). On the receipt it says 'air filter'. I assumed this meant they had changed my air filter. However, after going in my boot in a box there seems to be a brand new air filter.

My question is - where abouts in the car is this supposed to go so i can check that one is actually there. And how easy this would be to change myself.

Thanks, Read more

bell boy

this filter (pollen) wouldnt have a baring on the mot dude so he must mean air filter as in filtering air for the carb as in co readings :-)

I have a ford fiesta mk3 and it has been recently broken into. They have broken the wheel lock some how and have ripped the wires out of the transponder. I have changed this wire and sorted the ignition barrel out. I don?t have the original transponder key but two copies. Now the engine will try to turn over but not start. Any suggestions please? cheers for taking the time to answer my question. i think i'm gonna have to replace the whole steering colum then. as when i've put the barrel back into the ignition, the wheel lock wont come on when the key is out. also when you turn the ignition on and start the car. their are no sparks going to the spark plugs. when you take the key out of the car, the ignition an oil light remain slightly on. (so its trying to use power when it shudnt)

anyway cheers for ur time "oldman" greatly appriciated.

I have a 2001 306 hdi and have a problem with the rain sensative wiper. When in operation there is a sharp juddering and a click from the relay.

I dont know much about electrics but i think it must either be the relay, switch or motor?

I was wondering if anyone else had this problem and can give me an answer?

I have read a couple of threads where people have said its the relay and some say the motor. Any help would be appreciated. Also the rear wiper has a dodgey connection and works if i wiggle the blue relay. Is this likely to be a wiring problem or relay.
