1993 - L reg Micra starting problems - Carolyn
For nearly 2 years I have had starting problems with my micra predominately when the engine is warmed up, but also now not brilliant from cold. The engine turns over but does not fire and it seems like it is flooding. My Nissan dealer has tried replacing the coolant temperature sensor and putting on the modified wiring harness, but with no improvement! They now want to replace the air flow meter. However, do you think this would make any difference? Also does the throttle housing contain the air flow meter? The throttle housing was replaced last year by another garage (I bought a second hand throttle body after the engine starting losing power and jerking - it is running perfectly now). Am rapidly approaching nervous breakdown! They have quoted 120 pounds for new air flow meter but I don't want to bother if it won't improve the situation.

1. try getting the garage to agree that if their repair does not work, you will not be charged for the work.

2. have you read hj's car-by-car breakdown - button on the left?

hj says :
"Can suffer from poor starting ..... etc. "
look up and read the rest.

And if you get the garage to agree to this (and go through with it!), tell me their name!

Hi Carolyn,

Many previous discussions on Micra starting problems.

Here are just a few of them.

And there are also some additional links in those threads that will take you to other threads on the same subject as well.

Some of the previous discussions do mention the coolant temperature sensor and putting on the modified wiring harness, which I note, you've said the garage have changed.

Another example of poor dealer service.
It is unlikely that replacing the AFM/throttle body (they are integrated into one unit on the Micra) will improve hot starting. AFM problems are usually load-related and wouldn't normally affect starting (although give it a try if your garage will agree to a 'no win, no fee' deal!).

If the problem is related to hot starting and the engine is getting fuel, as you suspect, then I'd be looking at ignition-related problems, possibly failing ignition amplifier. Check also for a poor connection in the coolant temp sensor circuit because this may 'mimic' a low temperature and cause the ECU to over-fuel.

Many thanks for your comments Aprilia (and Dalglish, Mark and Dave as above).

Have now spoken with garage again, and am now even more confused! Don't think the problem is the ignition amplifier or temperature sensor circuit -these have been checked and deemed OK.

Returning to the airflow meter, I have been quoted 150 pounds including fitting for a new one. But if the throttle body is the same thing why was I quoted 500 pounds for one last summer! (This is why I had a SECONDHAND one put in the car - perhaps this isn't working properly?) Also do you think there could be any connection between the AFM and HOT starting? (Most other micra problems in the Back Room archive seem to be cold starting). Perhaps it would be worth going ahead with a new air flow meter for £150 - this dealer has already spent some time on it without charging me ....

The AFM is integrated into the throttle body on the Micra - they are effectively the same thing.
For £500 you would have been getting a brand new unit from Nissan. £150 is about the price for a 'reconditioned' one (not from Nissan).

BBA-Reman sell reconditioned ones as does this company: 0208 959 1210

There is also a company in Nottingham does them, but I can't remember the number right now.

If you had a new one for £500 last summer then it should still be covered by guarantee (Nissan warrant their parts for a year) - so dig out the receipt and go back with it.

I would maybe take your car to a different dealer (try a Bosch fuel injection specialist - the Micra system is fundamentally the same as the Bosch LH-Jetronic system).

Check the fuses in the little fusebox in front of the battery for corrosion.
