The Lawman

I have a 1997 primera and the rear screen washer has ceased to work.

Does anyone know where the pump is located?

i sort of hope it is just a dodgy pump, and not a disconnected tube. Read more

Morning all

we're looking at a couple of cars at the moment. Two estates - both september 2004, both the same price. One is a top of the range model, 1.9 diesel with 50k on the clock, the other is a more base model 1.6 petrol with 12k on the clock. Both have been on the forecourt for a couple of months.

I like the idea of diesel but we do about 8k miles a year, and the 50k miles in 18 months is making me a little wary.

What do you all think - which would be the model to go for. I'm erring towards the petrol - any thoughts/ideas?

Basically, different cars have differing "brake pedal feelings", some feel soft and squishy, with plenty of travel. Others have little travel and are quite firm, sometimes even sharp.

Personally, I prefer the softer approach, as it's easier to drive smoothly.

I've driven hydraulic Citroens for about 25 years and have got used to the zero travel braking, takes some getting used to but very reassuring, the softer approach used by most other manufacturers is initially scary I rest my foot on the pedal and nothing happens:-)) then as the panic sets in I push harder and everything is OK, I guess it's what you are used to. The only thing I do notice with most servo brakes is that the braking force seems to increase without exerting more pressure on the pedal so you need to gently back off to keep the braking level the same.

More for your amusement than anything else: I am driving my jalopy today, a 106. Took it to put some petrol in, started putting diesel in it (normally drive a vRS Fabia). Only 77p, which I've watered down with 37 quid's worth of unleaded.

It seems to be running OK, and the cashier said she's never seen anyone so relaxed about having done it.

Wouldn't have been so relaxed if I'd put petrol in the Fabia... Read more

I put 6l of UL in the 405 TD. Filled it to the top with Derv, and no issues. Older is better, I think.

Having discovered that my pre purchase car inspection may not have been as thorough as it should I am now doubting every little thing about my car and would appreciate opinions from those who know about this kind of stuff...

I unlocked the car the other day to proudly polish the dashboard of my new baby, sat in the drivers seat, put my key on the passenger seat, got my cloth out and just got started when the doors locked by themselves and couldn't be opened from the inside. After about 5 seconds panic I realised I had the key and unlocked it via the remote. I started cleaning again, really confused as to how I had managed to lean on the key and lock the door when it happened again! This time I know I did not press anything!

I decided that it must be some sort of fancy security device so thieves would get locked in (and it stopped happening once I put the key in the ignition so I could listen to the radio)and thought no more of it. However since discovering that they apparently did miss something on the check I am now a bit worried. I have just read the handbook and it describes this type of locking as 'double locking' but says that you need to press the lock button on the remote twice in 5 seconds for it to work and I didn't press it at all, I just unlocked the car, got in and started cleaning!

Is this a security feature or is something up?

cheers,

Try holding the open button down for abut 5 seconds. All the windows should open. Hold the lock button down, and they close.

This may be fairly commom knowledge but I thought I'd share...

My mate bought a VR6 for 1700 quid with 91k or a P plate. Gear change was loose and it drove OK but didn't pick up much speed till well over 3.5k revs and didn't start well either. After some investigation, it turned out that the air mass meter wasn't connected inside the bonnet! After re-connecting it it drives completely differently and starts from cold perfectly.

Regarding the gear change, a plastic part that guides the gear linkage had failed, costing £8.70 from VW to replace (and £25 for the local oily garage to fit, there and then!). This fixed the loose gear change.

Hope this might be of some use to someone! Read more

Thought I'd share this for those really bored at work on a Friday!

I had the stupidest accident ever on Monday, guy in front of me going onto a roundabout went, then suddenly stopped half-way over the line. I was already looking right & didn't realise he'd stopped & went into him at about 5mph. I drive a Golf mk4 and he was in a new 7 series (long wheel base). It felt like driving into a concrete wall! Damage to my car was as follows: cracked number plate, broken front light mounts & small scratch on bumper. Damage to his was a loose bit of trim & scratches to rear bumper. We exchanged details.

I am 26, and 3 months away from reaching the coveted 4-years no-claims period (after which the NCP can be protected). I was gutted, as my premium (which would have been 800 quid), would literally double if I lost 3 years NCB.

He called Wednesday, explaining that he didn't go to BMW as it was too expensive but a local place would sort it for £300, which I sent him same day. Can't help but feel how totally lucky I have been and what a reasonable guy he is as there are others out there who would have used the situation to their advantage. Read more

Quite a few years ago i was on a small garage forecourt which had arrows telling cars going down hill to go to the outside pumps and uphill to the inside pumps as it was on a dodgy bit of road, it was a served garage (remember them) and i had just had my LandRover 2a fuelled up and a woman drove in the wrong way up to my bumper, i got in and put it in reverse and looked around as i let out the clutch and BANG into the car that was right up behind me.
Ooops thinks i and got out to look at the damage and to my horror the whole valance of what i think was a Honda was on the floor.
The elderly woman whose car it was and i looked at it aghast.
The pump attendant came over and said ,oh one of those, picked up the valance and popped it back on.
The woman who had come in the wrong way had come round to see what was holding her up , the Honda owner took a deep breath and i winced, here it comes i thought, but she berated the other woman, look what you made this lad do, i left very quickly.

Engine is the old vw 5 cylinder 140bhp, its OK, but can be a bit smokey -lots of people blank off the egr whuch is said to help - not tried it myself. Front drop links go quite regularly on S/V70. £60 from volvo or £20+ web order.
The drivers side window switch is common failure and costs nigh on £100 mail order or dealer.
Mafs go ~ £100
pump timing belt every 40K, timimg belt at 80K, worht doing water pump at the same time.

I get low 40's mpg from a V70tdi.
