Hi all,
Just received my renewal for AA cover. The are wanting to charge $46.50 for Option 100 cover. I've just been on their website and they are offering it for £36 !! Is it standard practice to rip-off faithful customer or am I being a bit thick ??
Any good alternatives ?
Cheers

been a member of the RAC now for two years and have had to call them out a a few times.
1st time my car was over heating, patrol man popped a radseal pellet in the rad and everything was fixed. i was impressed and he got on his way.
2nd time round i just picked up a car from a trader, driving it back on the motor way and started over heating. pulled over rang the boys in orange and about an hour later he pulled up had a 3 second check and told me he was 95% sure the haed gasket had gone. got car towed back to the trader and got a refund.
3rd time was 2 days ago on my 1997 mk3 golf tdi.it was chucking out smoke and over reving on its own then cutting out. patrolmen arrived in 10 minutes, done his walk round and smelt a few things and proceded to explain that the turbo seal had gone.
next day rang vw and told them whats happening and said what the RAC had told me.
they laughed and said there is no such thing as a turbo seal.
got my mecanic round today, plugged his computer in, pressed a few buttons and reset the ECU and everything is now all fine and only cost me £35. considering i was expecting to pay in the region of £500 thanks to the patrolmans prediction.
ANYWAY do these patrolmen actually know what they are talking about because the last two times they have been completly wrong and very far away from what is really wrong.
might move to the AA Read more
I have to ask: why was there a kebab present while Hugo's friend was having his car mended?
Nice of it to offer to make the complaint though. Do you think the RAC would have given him a chilli reception?

And the knowledgeable Thommo in another thread has reminded me of the website I used: www.findapart.co.uk/
Does anyone know (or hazard a guess) at how well a Chrysler 300C saloon would fare in a crash, compared to my NCAP 5-star Toyota Avensis? Is the 300C going to be put through the NCAP test?
I'm sure Murphy The Cat will have something to say ;-) Read more
How about a 300c 'bus' then?

Hi,
Anyone used this ? Its based on an glycol ether solution. Recommended by my local garage who tell me that their diesel experts recommend this over the fortress solution.

We're driving down to the Vendee region in a couple of weeks close to La Rochelle and I've been trying to find the Quickest most direct route irrespective of whether we use toll roads or not. We're leaving from the Tunnel Terminal at Calais.Anybody any suggestions as to the best route planners-we've used tha AA one before but we weren't that confident with it.I think therte's a new M-way opened the A28 to Alencon but the AA guide doesn't put you on to it.Any help hugely appreciated Read more
"except a small piece aropund Rouen which can get snarled in rush hours"
And even that has been much improved in last couple of years - only a very small section over the Seine is non dual carriageway. New motorway from just south of Rouen to Alencon is a fantastic improvement on the old road.

Hello,
I have an old 1981 VW Transporter camper, with a 1.6 Diesel engine. For a couple of weeks, the battery warning light started to come on at highish engine speeds, I thought the fan belts must be slipping so I've tightened these up, and checked that the alternator is turning ok, it is.
What could be causing this light to come on ? it goes out eventually when the engine goes back to Idle speed, but can sometimes be seen flickering a little bit all the time. There is never any shortage of power from the battery, it always starts up fine, all accessories work well, suggesting that there is decent power output from the alternator whilst driving.
Any ideas ? I'd be grateful for any suggestions and tests I could do to check everything is ok, before I head off on holiday. Read more
Hello,
It says 88 000 on the clock, but this one is made in 1981, so it's probably on its second trip round, although the engine is quite new.
I tried cleaning up the contacts on the back of the alternator, it had some effect, but the light still comes on at anything other than idle, and takes a few moments to extinguish itself.
The alternator is also quite new, I suspect the connections on the back have something to do with this, as for example if i rev the engine with all electrics running, lights, fan etc. the lights get a tiny bit brighter than at idle, suggesting that the alternator is charging ok, and it always starts up fine.
I will probably have to take it to an auto electrician for a proper check, before I set off touring in a few weeks !

The thread on the Legacy/Forester fuel consumption got me thinking the other day (dangerous, says my wife .....)
Some of us own two two cars, or have two cars in the family. What if we had the ability to swop engines from car to car for different journeys, y'know a plug and play type of thing ?!
I have :
Subaru 2.5 SE Outback, 165bhp, new model
Fabia VrS 1.9 Tdi, 130bhp
I sometimes wonder what the Fabia would be like with the creamy 2.5 boxer engine from the Subaru - quiet, refined, more economical in the smaller car - even more of a Q car.
Then I think about the 130bhp Tdi engine from the Fabia in the Outback - noisy, relatively rough, lovely glob of torque, high economy, long touring range, probably just as quick as the 2.5 petrol
Which of these do you think would be a better match ? For me it would the Tdi in the Subaru.
Anyone else go a combination of cars where an engine switch would be .... interesting ?!

I'm considering renewing my car tax online this year. Have you done this and had a problem? The only potential problem I can think of is if the tax disc gets lost in the post.

I've just taxed my car using the on-line service and found the site to be painfully slow. Each page took 30 - 60 seconds to load.
