I'm reliably informed that the 26 British Racing Green Minis for sale at BCA Nottingham tomorrow are all from the Foxtons Estate Agents fleet.
I have always been lead to believe that these cars lead a hard life, as well as having decals plastered over them from new.
Would anyone see one of these as a good buy?

There's a considerable change to the car in September this year too, so that'll do bad things to the resale value.

{fingers crossed}

Hi all,

Quick visit - I need to replace the tailight from a 1995 Audi 80 hatch - just the outer part. Tried eBay - no luck - tried the GSF website but the post 1991 lights state "saloon".

Calling back on the rare times I've paid attention to an Audi 80, I've never noticed a difference between the two. Would I be alright buying the light for a saloon?

Many thanks,

Adam

That could have been it E.

I ended up getting the (right) one from GSF for the Audi 80 Saloon as his was. It was my fault as I was thinking it was hatch from when I saw it once in the carpark. (It has a very short boot!)

Anyway - light arrived yesterday morning less than 24 hours later so a big thumbs up for the GSF Website.

Thanks for all the advice,

Adam

I appreciate some of you learned folks may think this has been done to death previously but does anyone actually understand the full scope/nature of the oil consumption problem on the 'super-reliable !!!' Toyota vvt-i engines.
e.g does it just effect a certain engine size with components manufactured before a certain date.
The reason I ask is that I am trying to understand (without talking to the dealer) if SWMBO's Corolla is affected. She drives an Oct 03 1.4 vvt-i and currently only has 11k miles on the clock.
Most CBCB are vague.
Any advice would be gratefully appreciated. Read more

I must admit my wifes corolla has been abysmal, we'd complained about the gearbox at the 10K mark and then until it's 40K service when they finally acknowledged a problem. They had it 3 weeks & the items they replaced were horrific. 1st, 2nd & 5th gear clusters & baulk rings, plus bearings!
The dealer is not impressive either.

How thorough is too thorough?

The though crossed my mind of turning up at the next car I look at with a set of ramps so I can get underneath properly (Toledos have a drip tray so I'll want to get that off for a proper look.)

Provided I give them my money first of all should the worst happen, can you see a problem? Read more

Well my last two cars have gone from me to the great scrapheap in the sky so I haven't had to sell a car for 10 years but soon I will have to sell one car and one bike and I am dreading the idiots that will be coming round.

I remember in my younger days buying and selling a lot of cheap cars on a regular basis and having one idiot spending 30 minutes bouncing the suspension mounts on a Mk1 Escort I was selling for £50 and then declaring he wanted £10 off for a slight lack of bounce. I told him to proceed forth and procreate.

It comes downs to levels and behaving reasonably. If you are shelling out £5,000+ get it AA inspected.

If its a £500 job then a quick look see but don't be acting likely your buying a brand new Maybach and everything has to be perfect. If you want perfect buy new used cars have been used and have wear and tear thats why they are cheaper than new cars. Sorry but some buyers just don't seem to get that.

So if you turned up at my place with car ramps then you would be on your way quick smart.

Hi, I'm trying to get a reasonable deal on insurance for my jeep and I'm having a hard time. My situation is rather complicated:
1. I am a foreign national now resident in the UK, back in my home country - Commonwealth of Dominica - I had a car, licence and insurance for 4 years; no claims were made and no criminal convictions. When I arrived in the UK 2 years ago I used my international drivers licence.
2. I had to re-sit tests in order to get UK licence - now that I'm resident - which I successfully passed 3 weeks ago.
3. I have just imported the jeep from Japan.
4. I'm 24 years old.
5. I can't insure the car under my wife's name as she doesn't drive.
My question is: should insurers take into consideration my clean slate back in Dominica, or does the clock start from the day I get my UK drivers licence? I really can't afford horrendous monthly payments. Any help much appreciated, cheers. Read more

yesterday whilst driving a big cloud of black smoke came out the exhaust. Drove the 2 miles home and left it until this morning. Started it up at 5am for work, and the engine started to 'jump'. Got home this evening and started it up again, all seemed ok for a minute and then the engine started to jump again. Tried to take for a drive and it cut out, after about 2 meters it cut out.
Started it straight up and a huge cloud of white smoke came out the exhaust, then cut out.
Repeated a couple more times and same happened
RAC came out,had a fiddle and he thinks its a possibble turbo seal. He has strongly advised not to start it up again and definitly not to drive it.
REPORT SHEET- white smoke from exhaust and engine over revs without throttle.
Anyone had same problem.Any ideas of costs?

I'm purely guessing here, but:

White smoke means either steam or un/part burnt diesel (Anyone who's pulled the decompressor on a dumper truck to turn it off while know what I mean!).

Black smoke would mean oil or running too rich.

I imagine it might even be a dodgy piston ring if he means it revs itself - it's burning its own engine oil (possibly)

Definitely sounds more like a turbo seal though...

I have recently had the pleasure of working with a bunch of guys who IMO know just about all there is to know about building cars. They can spot a defect in a car a mile away even if Joe Public cannot see it up close - and they will tell you what part of the manufacturing process caused it. They do not work for Honda but do work for a very trusted and respected auto-maker. The general consensus among this group is that they cannot understand how Honda can build a car that is so well engineered and so high on quality in the Civic and still sell it at great value to it's cutomers.
I appreciate that it's looks will divide opinion and with this model Honda have done away with it's usual multi-link rear suspension set up (but even with this they say it is a cracking car), I have also enquired at my local dealer for one to replace SWMBO's Corolla and I am being quoted a 3 to 4 month delivery time due to it's popularity.
Combined with Honda's 1st class reputation in dealer service - surely thay have an absolute winner on their hands - or will UK badge snobbery continue to mean it is outsold by lesser cars such as the Golf etc.
Any views ????????? Read more

But the two and throw has been kicked into orbit(maybe rightly so)so i dont really want to say anything else.Sure did get interesting but i have had my wrist smacked from the people above so thats it.Mk5 golf is still a better car than the plastic pig though!!<<

Apologies I did not see this before my last thread.
As you say the to and fro (I think that is what you meant) was all good sport. It would be a boring world if we all drove the same cars and had the same views. I too love the Golf and on a different thread stated I was sorry not to be driving one now. My last purchase (Accord type s) was shortlisted with the MkV GTI - I went for the Honda because of my poor VW dealer experience.
Enjoy it what ever you drive.

I've never driven one, but would be interested to know whether, motoring hacks apart, they are driven as the maker intended. i.e. 7000rpm+ on a regular basis...

And are they a pain to drive at low revs? Read more

Good question - they do make a V6 VTEC and will be selling it in the new Legend when it appears in showroons in September.
It will also have the Honda SHAWD.

As mentioned on a previous thread, here are the breakdown stats from ADAC - Germany´s equivalent to the AA. It´s a PDF file.

According to the notes: the ranking is based on a 5 year average of adac breakdowns. They exclude manufacturer's breakdown services and presume they all have an equal chance of not being reported....

My partners son bought a 52 reg with 80,000 on the clock last week. Every couple of days it looses power but if he pulls over switches off and then restarts the thing is fine again.

Due to mental health problems he is incapable of going back to the garage to get this sorted so I've been volunteered. Not wanting to go in blind can anybody suggest what may be wrong with the car.

Many thanks in advance, Jon.
