Considering buying a Subaru legacy or forester but have been told that the mpg on these vehicles is horrific.

Can anyone tell me accurately what mpg they have been getting - i.e. from brimming the tank, and logging mileage and volume of fuel filled with.

a local mechanic said his 2.5auto struggled to get even 25mpg on a long run, and range with the fuel tank was rubbish as tank is really too small for these vehicles with their poor mpg.

I would be looking at a forester 2.0 auto , or a legacy 2.2 or 2.5 auto.

I need an estate or small mpv that will occaisionally tow a large 4 berth caravan, but still nice for the "man about town" to drive the rest of the year.

Car must be auto, but can't have anyting too huge as driveway at home is short, as is parking at work, I'd rather not have anything with a raging thirst.

Caravan is my sisters, I'm going to be allowed to use it over the summer, but can't borrow her towcar as its husbands company car (needs it for work everyday, I can't be insured on it)

My current car isn't big enough to tow (toyota corolla) and needs a big service, so either spend money on it or change for something that can tow...... Read more

Back again; I cheat with the dogs and the leather seats by which I mean I have fitted tough seat covers which are very effective but of course they negate the 'luxury' of the leather. One reason I chose the Outback instead of the tourer is the extra ground clearance, there are some terrible roads in e.g. Sheffield, Hull, Manchester not to mention leeds. As you seem interested my car is used a bit roughly, often heavily loaded, full use often made of the available power and not cleaned very often. I service it in accordance with the makers schedule with the addition of an intermediate engine oil and filter change every 5000 miles; it has not one squeak or rattle and has been totally reliable. I would definitely buy another if I was'nt heading for my second childhood with a boat and the "call of the sea" again after 25 years. Silly old sod.

Well

A suitable Sat Nav reached the price point where its now worthwhile for Nicole to have one for the Clio.

Aldi, Sunday Special (had to fight past the people getting the 79.99 DVD recorder), got the Medion for £149.99. (down from £249/£179)

Its an MDPNA 250 - T. ( a mio reference chasis) Runs on windows CE net 4.1., with a Medion badged version of Navigon Navigator 5.1 (dated Sep05)

At 149 quid its shockingly good value.

Well, I don't agree with "11. Tighten the lug
nuts again'as much as you can."

The method my Dad taught me was to tighten nuts with the manufacturer supplied wheelbrace until tight, lower car off the jack, then stand on the end of the wheelbrace and preferably bounce on it to make sure they're good and tight... Never caused any evident problems on any of our cars! But nowadays I'm a bit less forceful with them.

Problem: C5 on 51 plate. Driver's seat has height adjustment.
Seat bracket has snapped. Looks like a simple sheet metal bracket.
Dealer quote £550 to supply & fit a new sub-frame/chassis.
( Plus VAT ? - I didn't even ask!)

Any tips on either:
1. Reasonable price/source for a complete new seat with armrest ?
(Car has 90k and I expect another 60k+)
2. Can the bracket be welded ?

Can you drive with the seat at its lowest setting?

I'm 6'3 and have to have the seat set to "4 pulls of the lever" up.

Just back from a few rather wet days in the far west of Ireland. The pipe and tailbox parted company on a friend's 307 exhaust, so he went into Clifden to see what could be done. Half an hour later, welding job done for 25 euros = £18. Tinkering still lives!! Read more

Pipe to box are not welded now, they are expanded by machine,I forget what its called,But only flange joints needing bolts to join are welded, even silencer has no welds, its all compression fit and made by Computer.

Tinkering is a whats known as short term fix.I dont believe in!

Help please.

SWMBO recently decided to learn to drive, she wants to pass her test before her Provisional Licence is more than 26 years old!

She seems to be progressing really well and so now she is looking around for a car. We have a people carrier for the whole family.

So SWMBO's car must be:

New
As cheap as practical (maximum £9,000)
Sophisticated
Sensible enough for 100 mile motorway journeys, i'll use it occasionally
Capable of carrying three large and two small people rarely
Fitted with a CD player

Second problem eldest daughter will be 17 in a few months so car must also be:

Cheap to insure
Trendy

Wife likes the Aygo etc and hates the Panda, daughter hates the Aygo and loves the Panda, although daughter knows that she will lose. The joint favourite is a Corsa.

Any other ideas

The new 3 series has no provision for even a spacesaver spare wheel whereas the 5 series does. It would be really handy to have one in the boot for long journeys. Does a spacesaver's diameter always have to be exactly the same as the original tyres. I think I've seen ones that are slightly smaller as well as thinner. The real question I would like answered is would the 5 series spare fit a 3 series both technically and legally? Any thoughts?
On a slightly different tack (no pun intended); can tyre sealant such as porsche supply in their cars be used in a punctured runflat to extend the 50 mile range after a puncture? Read more

ABS (and similar systems) work by measuring the difference in rotational speeds between wheels and if it is greater than a figure carved in its memory it operates. SWMBO's A2 has an expanding space saver with the same rolling radius as the full size wheels meaning that ASP/ESP and all the other systems with TLAs still operate when the spare is fitted.

Different sized wheel is OK if you can turn the systems off, a problem if you cannot for example turn of the traction control and then cannot get drive because it keeps cutting in because the wheels are different sizes.

I know there are many backroomers that run Focus' (though anyone feel free to give your opinions). I was just wondering what tyres you guys use, only I need some new one's and, though I've found the Goodyear NCT5 Eagle's (195/60/R15) to last well and handle well, I was wondering whether there are any that are comparable in these respects but also quieter? I'm finding they kick up a lot of tyre roar on the motorway.

Basically, what's the best all-rounder tyre, though I don't want to sacrifice grip, as I think this is easily the most important (and safest) aspect of a tyre. It's just, surely there are quieter... Read more

I'm referring to an Astra, not a Focus.

OE fit were Michelin XH1 - noisy, wore quickly, replaced with three sets of Goodyear NCT5 - quieter, wore longer, cheaper, finally replaced with Goodyear Excellence - quieter still, wore like NCT5 on my car but quickly on son's.

As tyres do suit some car models better than others that may not be teribly helpful.
