M reg 2.0L Golf Gti
Whilst waiting at a round-a-bout in january i went to pull off and the cars front wheels locked. The car would not budge and i had to call out the RAC to take the car home. At the time the RAC guy felt it could be to do with the gearbox, and that the gearbox may have got stuck in two gears. However by the time the car got home the wheels had "Un-locked" themselves and were rolling freely. He was a bit baffled by this and put the car front up on jacks, (front wheel drive), and "drove the car" through all the gears without any problem. He left sratching his head saying he couldn't be sure what the problem was. I then contacted 3 mechanics. One said he felt it was the front brakes might need bleading as an air lock could have caused the wheels to lock. One said it sounded like the differential (whatever that is), and the other said it could be a lose rivet on the gearbox that is trapping inside the cogs. So including the RAC guys original feeling - thats 4 different possible cause's

Any ideas guys ??

its probably the gearbox as i have relaced a few with them stuck between 2nd and 3rd and they have been compleatly stuck and then they would move fine and do it again try changing the gear oil to see what its like inside and that will give you your answer if the oil is metalic new gearbox, but if its clean try adjusting the linkage other than that no idea

Has anyone had a towbar fitted by a Peugeot dealer? I have had twin sockets fitted for Caravan towing but there is no feed for the fridge ( should only be live when engine runs due to high current flow) have contacted dealer where fitted and they say they dont normally connect the fridge supply, just permanent power for the van when static. I know this is a bit obscure but does anyone know anything about this? The 407 has a CAN CAN wiring system (really!!!) so has to have a special box for the sockets to connect to. Read more

I have only one question which is kinda bugging me and was hoping someone would have brought up already (if you have then I apologise I must have missed it lol). What is really wrong with a Rover 214? I've had various views on them, I know the head-gasket is a common issue with them, but is that the only thing that makes them worse? I have also taken into account thats its an old persons car... But then isn't every car (ok, maybe not the american muscles... But they aint exactly common cars over in the UK). As I am a young driver, this is to be my first car. As I look at it, I like the look of the Rover 214, I think it looks nice and am definately not into doing a car up to make it look better, if I wanted a fast car that sticks out like a sore thumb, I'd get a mustang. But really, I dont want to buy the car and discover loads of unwanted problems, so if someone could just give me a straight answer as to whether getting a 214 is a wise move, then I'd be grateful. No car is perfect, but I dont want to be stuck with something that is a constant pain and run out of money to keep going lol. Cheers! Read more

thats incorrect, the peugeot diesel was the 218 D from the pre-gen 200, the bubble had the 220D which was a rover L-series. but that was a tough old boot too

You know what I mean. An earlier thread mentioned this, but let's be direct. Who else in here works for the Big Blue?

Perhaps we could have a get together?

I think we probably have enough for a get together, are we mainly south or north based?

Forgive me for being dense, but is the same Phoenix group that took over Rover? Read more

Happy Blue!

No, different people, but you might have thought that if they were in the motor trade, they would avoid the Phoenix name like the plague!.

Dynamic Dave

The lambda sensor is that small sticky out thing approx half way down the exhaust downpipes with a wire coming from it.

No idea about the rest of your question - sorry.

My GTI iv has, since major service, started making a 'whiring' noise on starting. It doesn't do it every time. It sounds like a resonation, like a cigarette card traped in a bicicle wheel (!) and the engine has recently started making a very gentle ticking noise (about 3 ticks per second) on idle too. Does anyon have any idea what this might be? I'm hoping it's not the timing belt? Read more

perleman

Hi All, thanks for your help.... As regards the ticking, I'm satisfied that it is the evaporative loss valve now, as the ticking starts on idle and then goes off after a while, so not worried about that.

However the start-up whire occurs just after releasing the key. The garage couldn't reproduce the fault as it only happens now and then. I think it's the starter-motor not disengaging properly or generally faulty but is there anything I can do to get it sorted under warrenty (which has 3 months left to run) if it doesn't do it when the car's at the garage? They claim that they have to witness it to replace under warrenty, wheere do I stand - as it's been noted, will I be liable for the £200-£300 bill if it knackers after the warrenty runs out? I hope I don't have to wait till I'm broken down before it'll get fixed.

LHM

Hi,

An 'Alarm System Service Required' message now appears on start-up following a trip to the bodyshop to have very minor damage to the front driver's side wing repaired. I'm pretty sure the fault is their doing (I didn't even know such a message existed!), but it would be nice to have some 'hard evidence'.

Does anyone know if faults detected by ECUs are 'timestamped' in any way? Obviously time/date would require a battery-backed system, so maybe that's out - but recording mileage (electronic odometer) would be pretty easy.

The car is a 2000MY Volvo S80.

I can't help thinking that car manufacturers are going a bit overboard with all the computers they put in cars nowadays.
They're just cars for gods sake, not the space shuttle. They don't need all that technology just to turn 4 wheels and keep the passengers warm. And I speak as an S80 owner who's had endless engine problems that the so called fault diagnostics systems at the dealers refuse to believe are occuring. If the computer can't even spot an obvious engine misfire what the hell is the point of it?
