Hello all,
During longer journeys or when the engine gets very warm in urban driving for example, the 'Oil Lack' warning comes on the dash computer. When I next stand the car and check the oil level it is within acceptable limits. During longer journeys it happens when I slow down say after a moterway trip. I never get the oil warning light, just the computer warning.

Is there a separate sensor for the computer and the dash as the haynes manual does not give any detailled information on this.

The engine is burning about 1 lt per 1000 miles which is ok but if I leave the car to idle for a long time, say from cold to the cooling fans kicking in, then rev it up a bit then I get a big cloud of oil smoke. When the car idles or is revved otherwise then there is no smoke (or none that I can tell of)

I change the oil and filter regularily and the cylinder head has just been reconditioned.

Any ideas? I am thinking either a blocked strainer or oil pump (but wouldent that cause the same problem all the time?) blocked filter (been changed, no difference) faulty sensor (but then why does it always happen after a motorway trip?) Could there be a inlet manifold gasket problem?

Cheers for any advice! Read more

The oil level sensor in the sump feeds the Oil Lack message, and a small pressure switch feeds the Oil Pressure light. The former measures sump level, the latter measures pressure.
Probably just a faulty or gunged up sensor.

VV carbs! I love 'em; [They've made me fortunes in non-start callouts!]

Check the fuel tank can breathe OK; either through a vented cap, or through a remote venting system - as appropriate. You might notice that the plastic tank has been sucked flat after a run if that's it.

This is more likely to be a case of carburettor icing - far more common that is generally thought. At recent temperatures; the hot-air pick-up system is vital to a vari-jet carb. Check that the white fibreglass hose from the exhaust manifold's tin oven [still present?] to the air intake is still OK. There are various little [red?] vacuum pipes and temp-switches inside the air-filter involved in the system too. At low temps; it must all be working.

If it's icing; it will usually start to drink fuel once the fault occurs. Any black smoke from the exhaust?

For anyone looking to reduce their car insurance costs the Post Office is well worth a look.
My premium with Churchill amounted to £135 (TPFT) this year. The PO quoted £88 for the same cover without the legal assistance bit.
On top of that, for new PO customers, there is a £50 cashback bonus. This means that for this year, my insurance will cost £38
I might be an old codger driving a (nice) old Volvo with a full no claims bonus, but if you're a cherry, the PO is more than willing to pick you. Read more

The Multipla was an interesting and innovative design concept, exploring new avenues in the expression of form through division and juxtaposition of shape in a way that had not been seen sinve the Citroen 2CV.......in other words it's UGLY!!!

By the way, I do realise my flowery prose is rubbish!

Has anyone fitted LED replacement bulbs to a recent car without using additional resistors(Peugeot 407 hopefully) and not had problems with indicator speed or bulb failure indication? Read more

Hows this for joined up electronic thinking.

The Touran is a fully electronic CAN system. All the doors have have switches, and light up the "door open warning" light. Except the rear hatch. Instead it stops the rear wash wipe working. You press the lever for a rear wipe or wash and nothing happens. So you get out and shut the door and the wiper/washer immediately gives the action you asked for on its own.

I was a good samaritan to a friend´s flat battteried car this morning, but without success. Having connected everything up I couldn´t get the other car to turn over more than twice, and pretty weak turnovers they were too.

This was after waiting 5+ minutes for a charge to get through, revving my Astra, starting hers with my engine running, then mine off, basically doing all I could think of.

Anything else to try before I go to buy her a new battery? She´s not an AA/RAC member BTW.

Is her battery basically kippered? Her car had been standing for a while and was completely dead to begin with. Not a sausage. So that´s what I suspect.

Any ideas gratefully received. Read more

The leads were poor quality cheapy shop name deleted - DD ones - part of a breakdown set. Hers BTW.

Having just sold my Range Rover (3.9 classic), I'm tempted by something slightly more economical.

Have spotted a 1999 'T' reg A6 avant auto, full audi history, 130 000 miles, £4995.

Seems like a good price. Miles are high, but that doesn't scare me too much - I assume these units are good for a damn sight more than that (aren't they??)

Any model specific things to be aware of?

Is it worth 'chippping' these things?

Thanks Read more

Thanks for the suggestions.

Might give this one a miss, it's a few too many miles away to chance a wasted journey.

My brothers 1999 Hyundai Lantra estate has gotten very noisy because of excess windnoise coming from the drivers door. We have adjusted it inwards and there is no obvious damage to the rubber surrounding the glass. The car has never been accident damage and the windnoise spoils what is otherwise a quiet car? Any ideas? Thanks Read more

Pulled into a motorway services yesterday; rolled up to the forward pump & started topping up.
Then I noticed the fuel was 102.9/litre (against the 96.9 flagged at the entrance) and stopped.

Anyone else been caught out by poor markings at the actual pump ?

I've no problem with the fuel - definite improvements against my normal Shell (see HJ FAQ) - just the unclear marking.

BP, thanks for that explanation! I have rund diesel cars for over 7 years so I wasn't aware of this very sensible design feature!
