Hi Guys,

Hope I'm onto the experts here. Have a 2001 Renault Megane. Having problem putting it into reverse and the gears crunching. Only in reverse and only when engine hot. doesn't do it first thing when engine cold.

could it be Gear box oil need topping up? If so can't see where the gear box oil would go?

Could it be a clutch problem - but then why would the other gears all be fine.

I've read that anything to do with the gear box the whole engine has to come out? Booked it in with the mechanic next week but want some advice as this women doesn't want to be fleeced.

Thanks guys

If the clutch was at fault, the noise would occur in
all gears not just reverse. Remember, that when cold the gearbox
oil will be more viscous ie. thicker and more able to
absorb clashing gear components and mask the noise. When the gearbox
is hot the oil is obviously thinner and is less able
to do this. I agree that this points towards a syncromesh
problem, but if its happening only in reverse, and slow engagment
stops the problem why bother with the trouble and expense getting
it repaired? Certainly a Renault garage will love to have it
in to fix but brace yourself for the bill, it will
make your eyes water! To check of anything serious has gone
pop, drain the gearbox oil into a container through a cloth
and examine the cloth for any particles left behind. Any solid
objects will be bits if gearbox and will give you a
clue to the problem area. If there are no bits, you
can probably live with it.

Nowt wrong with the gearbox mate. Will be clutch drag - bet a months money on it.

I know this has been discussed before but just a particular query.

My sister got a C3 hdi , about 18 months ago , and the dealer filled it with petrol instead. She got 5 miles and it ground to a halt, returned to dealer, petrol removed and filled with diesel.

Car has been fine since, not a hint of engine problem and I think she is now over 30k miles. Is it safe to assume that no damage has been done by this fuelling error at this stage? Read more

With injectors apparently costing £500 each from main dealers, this price can be reached without problem. Its the astronomical mark up on spares that distorts the logic.

I am glad my V8 is fed by 2 Strombergs!!

i have recentley rebuilt my zetec but also with piper cams & flowing and porting and an fse power boost valve i also have had the ecu reflashed to match the mods but its a pain to start, idles irractically, and has a bad misfire after you rev it up misses on way back down to idle speed ive had the timing done abut 3 times its got new plugs gapped at 1mm, new leads, new earths, new mass air meter, new lamda sensor and new engine sensors but it still has the same problem any ideas cos its cost me a small fortune but its currently running at 160 brake with 140 torque so when it runs ok it will be well worth it ps it still does 30 to the gallon

Have you tried a changing the coil pack? Also, which sensors have you had replaced?

I understand there is a way of doing clutchless gear changes by getting the engine speed to match the revs. But what does this mean, and how does a person know this. Can anyone give me some advise on doing this.

Thanks

If you really, really reeeeely want to abuse your gearbox, try
changing into reverse while travelling forward at about 15 mph!

I had a Morris Oxford that would easily slip into reverse whilst going forward, reverse gear was just a bit further across from 2nd on the stick and the spring was weak and when I was changing down to second, from third, I sometimes used to push the stick a little to far across. It was the best engine braking I ever experienced !

Hi, there. I don?t know if anyone can help?

I had been with my current insurer for 3 years, had a clean licence and have never had an accident or made a claim. A named driver (spouse) had a crash in December 2004 and I am still waiting for them to pay under my comprehensive policy. They wrote my car off and took it away and I have been car less ever since. To me it seems that they have tried every trick in the book to stall, delay and generally cause me grief. The claim has not been denied and is still ongoing some 14 months after the accident. Basically, because it?s a direct insurer (no broker involved) I get the impression that they can do what they like.

If anybody knows a legitimate way to get things speeded up, I would much appreciate it.

Find out who the Chief Exec is, and send the letter to him direct - marked Private and Confidential. That usually gets the attention of the Customer Service dept when the CEO is on the phone....!

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

Hi

I have a snapped handbrake cable on the above car, is it easy to do or should I get a local mechanic to sort it for me (anyone got ideas on how much?)

Cheers

Good evening wise and knowledge-able friends and a good evening too to those others like me who are neither wise nor knowledge-able!
My problem today is with my sons much loved Mitsubishi Carisma of 1999 vintage which has a 1.8 gasoline Direct Injection engine which has done 70k miles, performs well and has been economical for the past year.
It has now started to run "fast" on tickover - about 1200 rpm instead of its usual 750 and sometimes surges briefly when slowing down for road junctions/ roundabouts etc.

It seems as though it is the "choke " which is stuck slightly on and it smells very benziny near the exhaust - as though it is running rich.

The throttle cable is not sticking and removing the air filter makes no difference.

There are two fuse boxes - one under the bonnet and another in front of the drivers knees behind the dash. I cant see a diagnostic plug/socket near either of them but I know it must be somewhere !!
My friend will plug his all knowing laptop in for me if I can find the socket.

If anybody can tell me where the plug is I would appreciate it or better still if you have any ideas of what the problem is or how to cure it with a big hammer and a set of open ended spanners I would be delighted.

Yes, it could indeed be the idle air valve motor or the coolant temp sensor. With the appropriate diagnostic tool you can read live data and check this out.
On Mitsi's, when the idle valve goes bad it usually stops working completely (there are two windings and one fails) - if you can use a DMM you can check the windings to see if one has gone open circuit (infinite resistance). They are usually about 50-ohms IIRC.

What is the best way to bleed brakes on a 1997 BMW 316 compact? I ask because I have heard rumors that you have to be careful using one of those ezibleed one man systems on ABS systems if at all. I have one but have never used it or would it be better to avoid using this and get someone to pump the pedal while I bleed the system? Any advise much appriciated.

I believe the concern is about 'stagnant' brake fluid in the ABS module/pump. Dealers are supposed to cycle the valves and run the pump during fluid changes (though I have never seen them bother!)
I doubt there would be a problem doing it the conventional way, jsut make sure you use the ABS (esp. easy on snow or wet grass) a few times a year to keep it in shape.

I am investigating the cause of wheel locking on a police traffic patroller mercedes vito van (c/v type - w reg, 2000 model). The constable emergency braked at a speed of roughly 40 to 50 mph (in wet conditions) and experienced 'almost immediate' locking of the wheels and skidded for around 25m before colliding with another vehicle. The constable claims that he braked in time but it was the braking system of the van that caused the accident. Here is the link to the inspection pictures taken of the van: www.picturetrail.com/gallery/view?p=999&gid=923547...1

My questions would be 1) Does anyone have any specific technical information on the braking system of the vito van?
2) Can anyone shed some light as to any possible problems with the braking system (ABS, disc brakes etc.) that could have caused the wheels to lock up immediately after they were applied?
3) Any relevant brake-related information/history regarding the vito van from current or previous owners? (including complaints or comments)

Many thanks to anyone that can help. Read more

Also, the vans were intended as police patrol, maybe not the
ideal vehicle for car pursuits?

Was a van really being used in a pursuit (I noted the earlier comment about damage due to hitting a kerb)? If so, I find it incredible that this is 'allowed'. Surely the Police are failing in their Duty of Care responsibily by allowing a pursuit in an unsuitable vehicle.

I was fortunate enough to be not scared from this event that occured on Sunday.

Basically, as I was driving down a road, a car drove straight through my path WITHOUT even looking at around 40 mph. I suspect the driver was either high on drugs, angry over something or drink driving. I managed to follow her to where she was going and I was going to approach her but my friend told me not to. Of course I was angry, but I was calm. But in any case, this wouldn't probably have led to anything good.

Anyway, I have checked and can confirm the car hasn't got a false number plate.

I reported this incident to the Police, but of course this information can only be acted upon if there are numerous complaints about this driver. But in any case, I have done my bit.

My question is, what else can I do. I think the police should write a letter to her saying that someone has complained about her wreckless driving, and any accident will be looked at suspiciously involving her car. And if her insurers were advised of this, she would think three times before driving like a lunatic. And of course, they should suggest extra training in driving as she doesn't seem to be a competent driver.

This might be an isolated incident on her part, but if the driver was aware of the danger they were putting others in, maybe, just maybe there would be one less casualty/ fatality on the road.

Thanks
Greg

Not sure if police use it, but there's www.baddriving.com/

What happens with that site; do they pass info. on to the Police after so many logged incidents? If not whats the point of it - the people being reported may never see the website and not know they are being criticised?
Problem with it is it could be open to abuse by people with a grudge against a neighbour/ colleague etc. And in many cases the severity of an incident may be subjective. (Just meaning in general, I'm not referring to the OP's incident).
Im not sure its a very good thing; but then I noticed you can report motorway middle lane hogs - I could report ten of those every morning and evening!
