My 2002 new shape Vectra is now on 126,000 miles . My question is do springs actually wear out and loose their springness , sorry dont know how to describe .

The front and rear springs have never been changed , only rear shock absorbers . Still on original front shocks.

If theres any possibilty that this question can be answered asap I would be most greatfull.

Thankyou . Read more

Any do and dont's? I'm thinking of getting a system in anticipation of a summer hols taking the car down to S France. If I go for it I'll get it fitted professionally.

Reckless Engineer

Hi all. I own a 1999 V plate 2.0 zetec Mondeo, The only problem I have with it (other than the usual leaky rear lights and worn bottom-arm-bushes) is that it is a little reluctant to return down to engine idle speed. This usually occurs when using engine braking/coming down through the gears and can be a little worrying when the engine revs fail to drop below 1500-1750 rpm. This engine speed is then maintained for about 30 seconds or so, even after I have come to a stop and dipped the clutch, then it will slowly drop down to an idle speed somewhere between 800 and 1100 rpm. (the idle speed doesn't fluctuate once its got to idle).
I have checked the throttle cable to ensure it is running free with no resistance, and lubricated up all the joints/pins etc on the linkage but it still refuses to go straight back down to idle, and the rev-range it occurs in is almost always the same. Has anyone else had this problem? Is it an easy-fix or am I going to have to pay through the nose for a new e.c.u. ?
Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

Thanks to all for the help and the advice, it is appreciated.
I guess all I need to do now is find the time to do it over the weekend.
Thanks again. R-E

I switched to Halford?s lemon scented screen wash concentrate a few weeks ago. Largely because SWMBO did not like the smell of my usual cheapo stuff.
A welcome side effect is that the spray function of the nozzles has been mostly restored. They had reduced to single jets over the past few years.
The pack claims the stuff contains water softeners.
More expensive indeed, but not as dear as the VW stuff IIRC.

Was in Sheffield Halfords and have bought the advanced formula stuff in a 5l container. Cheaper than the double concentrate and still has the water softeners. No special offer though.
Surprised the water softener actually make does a difference around here as furring up of pipes/kettles has never been an issue.

A while ago i passed four large transporter lorries each with a tank on heading south down the A3,all four lorries were from a private haulage firm from Southampton.
In Petersfield there is a Vehicle repair garage where the Army seem to take their lorries and LandRovers to be repaired and serviced, as the REME repair shops are now depots for car storage, this to is a private garage not army.
Yesterday there was a large white transporter dropping off a Land Rover and i asked the driver ,who was RAF, "where are your own lorries" ie Scammels/Oshcosh'es?,he told me there are hardly any left and they now rely on private firms for hire .
My question is what would happen if god forbid we went to war again ?,"sorry mate we are fully booked next week".
Only a fool would think that it could not happen again,i seem to remember that that was the opinion just before the second world war and that was why we had such poor equipment ,in fact the fact we had to leave so much behind after Dunkirk was a blessing as we were forced to start afresh and the Bedford QL appeared and the Matatdor.
Maybe not totally appropriate to this forum ,but concerns you nethertheless. Read more

I've a 2001 Punto 1.2 8v and the head gasket just 'went' at 75000 Kilomteters (I live in France - thats about 50,000 miles). THe local FIAT main dealer took two weeks to fix it, offered no courtesy car, and charged 800 Euros (about 520 pounds) for changing the head gasket, water pump, cam-belt,temperature gauge on the radiator, sparkplugs and purging the cooling circuit.

I asked what I can do to avoid it happening again and received the customary gallic shrug, arms open wide and protruding lower lip. I know to listen for the gurgling noise (airlock in the cooling system) behind the heater controls - mine had had that before the failure.

First question : what can I do to stop an air-lock infiltrating in the first place???

Second question : Is it an inherent fault (i.e. down to cheapo engineering) and thus likely to happen again whatever I do. (But there are 1000s of these cars about, they can't all have head gaskets 'going'- or can they????)

Third question :I think I know the answer, but was I ripped off on the price??? Read more

As quoted elsewhere on this site, they seem like good value for money until things start to go wrong. And then you start reading how many other things can go wrong and you end up like the guy who read the a-z of common illnesses and became convinced he had them all except one (I think it was in 'Three men and a boat' by Jerome K Jerome). Then anxiety sets in. Once anxiety sets in it's time to change the car.

Living as i do in Bournemouth we have probably more elder rivers than other places (I am one-mid 70's). I do think we should be made to take a simple test to ensure we are still able to drive effectively. Filling in the form to say we are fit in the licence application is really not enough. How many of us has read the Highway Code since we passed our test(1952 i my case).

Young drivers have sharp reactions and skill but lack experience.

Depends what you mean by skill actually. They may be good at doing things they wouldn't do if they had a bit more experience. Skill in this context only comes with experience. Same sort of thing could be said about sharp reactions: doesn't matter how quick they are if they're incorrect. Better to be a bit slower and get it right.

Like many older Focus's, I have the intermittent speed sensor problem, where the speedo drops to zero for a few seconds/minutes. On my car there are no other symptoms of low power etc.

Before going to the trouble of changing the sensor (not an easy job) I thought it would be a good idea to make sure it wasn't just a connector problem.

It should be a simple job to remove the connector from the sensor, but after ages under the car, I couldn't work out how it should be disconnected. Does anyone have any ideas?

Many thanks,

Just to balance the usual complaints against main dealers my local Mercedes Basingstoke garage gave excellent service this week. I had an esp abs light flashing away on the dash and only the main lot have the appropriate computer to plug in....this usually precedes pain in the wallet in my experience. However they sent their mobile man out to my place of work and diagnosed the problem then later he came round to my house and fitted the offending part (£56) also changing a duff bulb. They gave me 40% labour discount as I have a model over six years old and the lot including Gordon Brown's cut was £131 odd.....not bad I think. Read more

I took my C4 into local Citroen dealer (Romford) for its 1000 mile inspection. Booked it in for 8.30am, service guy said "take a seat, won't be long" Was out of dealer by 9.15. This is despite the fact that the poor guy had been almost attacked by 3 Hyundai driving pensioners who treated him in the most appalling fashion over their servicing (know the type? the ones who think they own Sainsburys door area as it is due to open and woe betide anyone who dares to get close to the doors before them.)

Does anyone know a supplier/fitter of aftermarket cruise control in London or the South East? I've found Conrad Anderson in Birmingham but Google is not throwing up any other suppliers closer to home. Thanks in advance for any help. Andy Read more

I use cruise control all the time. With the VDO system it's so easy to flick on and off. It helps me stick to speed limits, improves fuel consumption, and takes a little of the stress out of driving. I had it retro-fitted to the first MB I bought (which wasn't fly-by-wire and which proved troublesome until the speedo cable was replaced).
