When its been standing overnight or for several hours during the day my 4 month old A4 Tdi will flash the re brake warning (accompanied by 3 loud beeps) when started. The brake fluid level is fine and the brake fluid level sensor has been replaced to no effect. Theres no warning if the car has been driven recently, it only seems to be from cold. The brakes work fine, by the way.
Does anyone know if the dealer should be able to get a specific fault code off the computer that would explain the warning? Read more
Hello All
Just got a little runabout (see previous thread for reason!), a Metro, 1993, Diesel, only 116,000 miles, lovely little runner etc etc, anyway, one of the sidelights was out so I changed the bulb (even I can just about manage this), now both of the headlights dont work.
Have checked all the fuses, bulbs are OK.
Full beam works on 'flash' but not on push stalk forward 'On' position, headlights on dip just dont work at all, sidelights now OK, praise the lord.
Any ideas?, a mate suggested something about a headlight relay (whatever that is), other said the switch must be duff, cant work out how changing a sidelight would do this but maybe its just a coincidence?
Over to you clever people, any suggestions before I take it to the local garage, desperately need this motor to get to work, even though its a bit of a banger, and cant afford a bill that is more than I paid for the car!.
Cheers

Bit the bullet and took it to a garage, new switch unit, apparantly I managed to blow the switch (and something else which I cant remember) while changing a side light bulb!!, fair play to the garage though, £75 for new switch and only 3/4 of an hours labour, £110 inc VAT, and they tightened the fan belt because it started squeeking!
Let us pray that nothing else goes wrong because I'm brassik til pay day.
:-)
Cheers for the help anyway.

I have a Peugeot 106 (around 8/9 years old?) which has recently taken to stalling when I slow down for traffic lights or roundabouts or need to come to a complete stop. This ONLY happens when I have just come off of the motorway (so far). Once I have left it to cool the problem seems to be rectified, but obviously this constant stalling after exiting the motorway is inconvenient and dangerous. I am taking it to a garage but does anyone have any ideas/similar experiences?
Thanks! Read more

I'm just about to start a new job and have been sent the company car list. There are just 18 vehicles on it, 12 of which are Ford. This is in stark contrast to my old company who would let you have whatever you liked as long as you were prepared to pay for anything over your allowance. The new company will only fit extras if I pay for them myself.
I must admit having a limited list does make decision making somewhat easier and also saves my girlfriend being talked at endlessly about whether I should get this model or that extra.
After a few minutes perusing, I've managed to narrow down my selection to the following and would appreciate any feedback:
Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi Ghia X 5dr
Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi Titanium 5dr
Saab 9-3 1.9 TiD Vector Sport 4dr
If it helps, there are 3 if us in our family (including our 18 month old daughter). I will be driving at least 30k miles a year and regularly travel to see family in Oldham and Tunbridge Wells from our home in Southampton.
The Mondeos offer practicality and some opulence (although the mahogany and leather steering wheel on the Ghia X may get me some ribbing from my mates). I've driven the 2.0 TDCi and liked the performance. The Saab looks smart and is very highly specced but is only a saloon (the list is so limited I can't even get the estate) and I gather the engine is quite strong.
My mind is split between what's right in my head - Mondeo - and what's right in my heart - Saab.
All feedback appreciated.
Many thanks,
Phil DS

Yes, I know it's considered heresy on this site to make any criticism of a Ford, even an implied one, but it only evens up the score with all of the jibes about other makes!
i know ive posted this before but my local parts store. Im interested in replacing the rear subframe mounts as the knocking is getting more frequent and louder. Is there 2 mounts on each side? should they all be replaced or do some wear more than others? also how much should i expect to pay?
does this make a big difference to handling?

Any history of the reliability of the 5-speed Tiptronic gearbox, particularly behind a 130 TDI? Mine was replaced at 48000 miles fortunately under warranty - I'm just wondering if I will have a hefty bill at 96000 miles. Read more
Many thanks it's a great box when it works, but I thought I had seen a comment in one of HJ's columns regarding problems on a tiptronic box in an Audi A3/4 which failed at 76k.
An Audi TT with 14K on the clock has corroded front disks - not worn but rusted and as such give grinding noises.
According to the Audi dealer who sold the car the disks are not covered by warranty but will need to be paid for - disks and fitting inc VAT = £200 approx - the existing pads are fine and not needing replaced - the car is not thashed but driven as one would expect from a performance car.
What is the BR opinion about the above - the invoice be paid (to get the car back) and what next? Small claims court / pay and forget............ Read more
In years gone by when nasty stuff like asbestos was allowed in brake pads then discs could be made with of a fairly corrosion resistant steel and would normally last as long as the car, the pads being the consumable item. Nowdays for good reasons pad material has changed and discs are also considered to be a consumable, 60k ish for front discs is normal as is corrosion when they are not used.

My wife has just hit a road restrictor and clumped the drivers door mirror. The body sprang back and is fine, but the mirror has shattered, although all the mirror is still held intact in position.
Has anyone replaced one of these before. Can one just pluck out the old glass and stick on a new one in place on the outside, or does everything have to be stripped out? Read more
forever or a day,is the answer, at one time i used to use glassfibre resin to hold them in if they were looking dodgy.

Aprilia has mentioned a long lance with a 90 degree angled end for cleaning underneath cars.
I'd be interested in knowing the details - i.e. where to get one of these lances, what name they go under, etc.

Any tips on how to do it carefully?
Set to a wide fine spray, rather than a 'jet'.

I think that a diagnostic check by the dealer should say what triggered the warning. My A6 suffered intermittent ABS failure warnings that went away after restarting the car, and that showed up in the diagnostic - and the problem went away by itself.
Might be a dodgy earth or wire on the sensor as my prob showed up in the damp
